I'm trying to keep it simple what Mahito meant when he said that people don't have hearts. So how did I make it clear that people do have hearts, but he still only sees them as part of the body As for Junpei, well (personally) I've also been bullied at school once, but not quite to that level, in a way, I understand him very well why he doesn't believe in love because for him, surviving day to day has become a job, you could say.

Not to be that girl, but I think you meant empathize :D (I'm sure that's auto-correct's fault)

Idk if it'll help you remember Mahito's name, but I always think of the alcoholic cocktail a Mojito haha

The word Mahito uses when he asks if Junpei thinks people have hearts isn't 心臓 (shinzou) which would be the physical heart, but rather 心 (kokoro) which is more like someone's "mental" heart, like a mind, spirit etc. Unfortunately the translation isn't really clear there because English doesn't have an equivalent word to separate the two kinds of "heart" one can refer to the way Japanese does.

Yeah slight error with auto correct haha! Though we spell it empathise without the Z because UK :P

Yeah it's more "to have heart" which is emotional resilience or passion. It can also be spirit in the sense of fighting spirit but not spirit in the same sense as the soul is the essence of us. The way I read it and still see it is that Mahito is saying that the soul is vital essence but the 'heart' is discardable as he has no use for because it's immaterial. It's the soul that he can touch but the 'heart' he cannot. So the 'heart' is of no importance to the point that he can destroy it in the process of his technique. But also ties in to the idea that he believes humans are inherently disgusting and grotesque which is why he creates them into these horrendous forms. He thinks humans don't have hearts because the soul is all that matters to him. Ultimately he sees the heart / humanity's fighting spirit as a disposable byproduct.

Torje Amundsen

Exactly! In-universe through his understanding, Mahito is essentially saying that people don't have "hearts" as all emotions are merely a result of the soul's metabolism, and the soul itself is far too "mechanical" (as he worded it) to be called a heart, so it's all disposable and worthless to him.
