Hi, new here, I just binge watched everything and wanted to point out some things, but obviously without spoilers. Unfortunately, the series (both the manga and the anime) suffer from poor translation, both in official and unofficial translations, because it uses many concepts that either don't have a direct translation outside of Japanese, or where the word is translated with the closest equivalent in another language, but the meaning is lost outside of the cultural context. For example, as someone mentioned: "Curses" and "Cursed Spirits" are not the same thing; moreover, one is not translated correctly and the other loses its context. To begin, “Cursed Spirit” is said as 'Jurei' [呪霊] in Japanese, but its official English translation as “Cursed Spirit”, introduces a passive connotation as if it were “a spirit that was cursed”. In reality, the original Japanese word refers more to “a spirit that curses”, that is, an entity that embodies, produces, or spreads curses. On the other hand, “Curse” is said as 'Noroi' [呪い] in Japanese, and is a much broader traditional concept within Japanese culture. Historically, it is not limited to a simple act of cursing, but can describe anything or anyone that brings misfortune, calamity, suffering, or spiritual contamination. That is why "Curse" (Noroi) is also used to describe or refer to ideals, desires, and people (humans), since these too can produce something bad, not just cursed spirits. Finally, as others have mentioned, the series frequently employs the "show, don't tell" approach. However, this often leads to situations where something is never clarified, either because it's visually demonstrated or because it's only fully understood within the Japanese context. So, if someone clarifies something immediately, it's almost certain that it won't be mentioned by the show again. Like the "innate talent" line from episode 6, you either understand it in the moment or you never will. It's no coincidence that the vast majority of fans have headcanons based on misinterpretations, the so-called "reading comprehension curse", but thank goodness you're not affected by this... maybe you're a sorceress. That's all, thanks for your time. I'm looking forward to everything that's to come. Have a great day!!

Thank you - I find that helpful with the Curse / Curse Spirit as there's a clear distinction between Curse = the energy that originates from negative emotions and then the Curse Spirits that are born from that emotion! But I can understand how it gets confusing for people haha!

I feel like I need to tell you that you are confusing jjk cursed spirits and csm devils its a mistake many people do because they are similar concepts. The differnce is that humanity has direct effect on devils as makima said " more they fear the name stronger devil is " but cursed spirits are different humans intense neagtive feelings towards other humans, earth and forests have allowed mahito and others to gain consciousness and inteligence and made them borne stronger but thats it,from the moment they are born the humans have no effect on how strong they are or how strong they are going to be thats completely up their talents and such.

DrSophieDarlingReacts

It literally says in the introduction of curse spirits that they are strengthened by the accumulation of negative human emotions and have been growing stronger because of the stress of modern life. The more negative the world becomes the stronger the curses become. Yes - they are born from it but it's been stated on more than one occasion that they feed on the fear and negativity and it helps to strengthen them. I haven't got it confused. It's been emphasised from their introduction. They are both BORN of that negativity and strengthened by it. I've been paying attention to the dialogue where that's been referenced more than once. I'm not sure how you've jumped to the presumption that I don't understand the differences between the two so I'm confused myself? I'm aware how both function :) Fear = Negativity = Curse Energy for them to feed on and grow their strength which is why they're so powerful. If cursed energy can be weaponised and imbued in objects there's nothing to say they cannot sustain themselves on that energy to help increase their strength too.

nothing against yuji but I think it's good that nanami reminded him what you can and can't do

Yes the cursed spirits do feed of peoples fears araound them to make themselves stronger but if humans around the world started fearing humans more, that would not make mahito stronger. you made a comment about how mahito is going to be the stongest cursed spirit because he is the manifestation of humans negative feelings towards one another. if a child got scared of a dog near mahito he could feed of that to get stronger the negativity of humans around the world has no direct effect on mahito it seemed to me that you have thought like that. Im sorry if I got it wrong its a common mistake peaple do and with you watching them together I just wanted to make sure that you werent.

It should be clarified that innate talent and the energy you are born with are not the factor of total power in a being, and are only some of the most important ones but not all of them

I'm aware of how it works and frankly it's exhausting being treated as if I'm an idiot. It comes across as patronising when I undestand the system and even a brief Google without spoilers will show I am right in that they feed on negative emotions to grow stronger. Which is what I said. I didn't say he ONLY FED on humanity's hatred but that as it's only growing and producing more negativity he can absorb more strength from that. So yes he does have the potential to grow even stronger. I also never said fear was the only emotion to generate negativity. It was an example. I'm sorry if this comes across as mean but it's tiring when I'm trying to enjoy the show and learn it myself.

DrSophieDarlingReacts

I'm sorry but I understand the difference. I don't need my hand held and if anything it comes across as patronising. I understand that's not the intention but let me enjoy the show. Let me actually figure it out for myself. Everyone is jumping down my throat and accusing me of not understanding the difference when I do. I'm not an idiot so please stop treating me like one. Also a very brief Google without spoilers will show that I am right in my interpretation that they feed on negative emotions to gain further strength. They aren't solely born with all the strength they possess. They have the ability to grow stronger. Which is what I said. So rather than taking my words out of context listen to what I'm saying because it's getting off putting watching JJK if this is a taster of how the community behaves. Fear is a negative emotion. I never said that was the only emotion to produce cursed energy. It was the example I was using.

Junpei needs to be protected at all costs 😭 Also, JJK fandom can be A Lot(tm) and can often get swamped by power system/power scaling commentary rather than any meaningful character or theme analysis, and im hoping you'll enjoy the more character/theme/symbolism stuff as we get further in

Is it too early for me to say that I hate Mahito with a passion? Well, I hate Mahito with a passion 😂

Nanami is so matter-of-fact. I love him! He's such a practical, yet sentimental guy. Your explanation of Nanami accepting his limitations and cutting his losses, rather than taking a gamble with his life is such a great observation. It's so human and an interesting pattern to recognize as the series progresses
