It took me a while to warm up to Lunge too since he’s way too obsessed with thinking that Tenma is the killer despite the contradictory information telling him otherwise. I would love to get into his head and see what he’s thinking now. He admits that he owned his life to Tenma but he’s still chasing him… what a strange man.

Leah Henderson

My two cents on Lunge is he really staked everything on solving this case/Tenma being the culprit; his family even left him while he was trying to catch Tenma. This is all he has left and he's blinded by his obsession and pride. Total case of denial lol

You know what? I also think Lunge *wants* it to be Tenma because, as you said, he's enjoying this cat and mouse game! His long and distinguished detective career has come to its grand pinnacle with a worthy foe... He's got Main Character Syndrome! XD

Sophie: "He's definitely going to save him! If this doesn't show Lunge that Tenma can't be a killer, I don't know what will. He would have just let him die if that were the case!" Lunge thinks that Tenma had a mental breakdown from all the stress. 😟 He sees Tenma's extreme kindness and need to save people as a way to hide some dark stuff lurking in his subconscious 🧠☯️. Lunge believes that "Johan" is just a representation of Tenma’s repressed anger, guilt, and desire for revenge. 😔 Lunge is on a serious investigation, but he can’t find much about Johan. There are hardly any official records, birth certificates, or recent photos of him. 🗂📑 Because Johan is basically a ghost on paper, Lunge figures that Tenma must have made him up to take the blame for his own crimes. 👻 Tenma had a solid motive for the initial murders. He got demoted by Director Heinemann after choosing to save Johan instead of the Mayor. 😤 So, Lunge thinks Tenma might have wanted revenge on his bosses. Not long after, they were found to have been poisoned and subsequently died.🍬💀 With the leadership gone, Tenma suddenly gets promoted to Chief of Surgery, which just gives him even more motive. 🏨💶👨🏻‍⚕️💼 When Lunge starts looking into Tenma, his main goal is to prove his theory that a split personality disorder is behind the murders.🕵🏻‍♂️Things get a bit messy when Eva, out of pure jealousy and wanting revenge after Tenma turned her down for a relationship, goes to the police and points the finger at him as the killer. 😒 🫵 The description Eva, his ex fiancé, gives only makes Lunge more convinced that Tenma is guilty. Since she comes from a wealthy background, the police see her as a credible source. 🧏🏼‍♀️📿👒 When she describes Tenma as manipulative, ambitious, and vengeful, Lunge takes all that as psychological evidence. 🎭📝 According to Eva, Tenma supposedly killed hospital directors and others to get back at those who demoted him or to cover up his past ambitions. 😤 For Lunge, this "rational" explanation makes way more sense than a theory about some mysterious ghostly killer (a.k.a. Johan👻) by on top of that a Japanese immigrant 🇯🇵 (we can't ignore the potential discriminatory bias, which is one of the show's themes). Then there’s the fact that Tenma keeps showing up at crime scenes💥 (this really doesn't help his situation, and that's putting it mildly‼️). He was there when Adolf Junkers got shot, and while Tenma says a blonde guy did it, Lunge only sees him holding a gun. 🔫 Instead of acting like an innocent guy and cooperating with the police, Tenma goes on the run, which Lunge takes as a clear sign of guilt.🏃🏻‍♂️💨 🚔 Plus, a lot of the murders in the series are super precise and require medical/anatomy knowledge. The candy-poisoning murder, for example, needed someone with access to lethal substances and the skills to handle them, perfect for a high-level surgeon like Tenma. ⚗️ Lunge twists every new piece of evidence, even Tenma’s heroic acts while he’s on the run, into proof that he’s a genius psychopath just trying to keep up his "good guy" image. 😈 I hope you can see why Lunge deeply believes Dr. Kenzo Tenma is the real killer and thinks "Johan Liebert" is just a made-up alter ego. 👥️ It all comes down to his mix of psychological theories, circumstantial evidence, and his own strict way of thinking. 🤔

I usually find myself on the same page as you, Sophie and Leah, like 99% of the time, haha! But I’ve got to say, I think you all might be a bit too hard on Lunge this time. He actually has some pretty solid reasons for suspecting Tenma as the killer! Sure, Lunge treats his brain like a supercharged digital database. Once he formulates a theory that fits all the pieces perfectly, it’s tough for him to let it go. 🧠 And yeah, that’s definitely a flaw we can point out, he can be way too rigid in his thinking! But honestly, when it comes to Tenma and the suspicions surrounding him, I find Lunge’s concerns to be quite valid. I mean, just think about it! There’s quite a lot of circumstantial evidence that makes Tenma look guilty, and Lunge is just trying to connect the dots. 🔍 Check out my longer response to Sophie for more details on this. I’d love to hear what you all think! 🤗

Haha, you nailed it, Leah! 😂 The man literally chose a hypothetical serial killer over his own family dinner, talk about toxic dedication! 😭 He is definitely a certified weirdo, but I still can’t help but want to crack open his robot brain and see where he’s coming from 🧠🤖. Feel free to review my message about his valid concerns I believe regarding Tenma. 👐

You brought up interesting points about how Lunge’s mind works. I still think he could have given Tenma the benefit of the doubt though. If someone like Tenma managed to track down Johan and Anna’s old orphanage, I think Lunge could’ve too. His fixation on proving that Tenma is the real culprit is clouding his judgement.

Mickael Landry

I totally get where you're coming from! It definitely feels like Lunge is wearing blinders sometimes. 👍 I think as viewers, we also have a bit of a "god-view" bias. We get to see Tenma’s genuine warmth and know for a fact that he doesn't have a split personality. For Lunge, though, the puzzle looks completely different. When Tenma defends himself by blaming a mysterious "Johan Liebert", a man who essentially doesn't exist on paper, it makes total sense from an investigator's perspective to assume Johan is a myth. Plus, poor Tenma just happens to keep showing up at the wrong place at the wrong time! Every crime scene he is spotted near just piles on the circumstantial evidence, unfortunately. The most fascinating part about Lunge’s mindset is that he actually doesn't think Tenma is a liar! 😅 He truly believes Tenma is a good man who is completely unaware of the dark, alternate personality living inside him. So in Lunge's mind, he isn't hunting a malicious villain; he's trying to solve a tragic psychological puzzle. It’s definitely frustrating to watch, but it makes their cat-and-mouse dynamic so brilliant! 😁

I wrote earlier: "He sees Tenma's extreme kindness and need to save people as a way to hide some dark stuff lurking in his subconscious." Thanks you've made me see that I shouldn't have written that and I was mistaken there, haha. 🤭

Thank you for typing this! This gives me more appreciation for this series' writing as a whole, since Sophie makes everything in the series seem almost obvious as soon as the slightest hint is given about a certain event :D

Leaving the burps in was a classy move 🤭
