Nadj

When they call him hentai they are essentially calling him a pervert.

Antonio

Oh yeah, the first episode and finale of every arc from here on is 45~ minutes in case you need to know that for scheduling. (Entertainment district finale is only 32mins) The intros of the first episodes of each arc are very cinematic and part of the episode and shouldn't be skipped.

Hi Sophie! I love Rengoku's dad realistic depiction of trauma, because responses to it are often messy and dangerous, both for the one traumatised and those around them. I also think that a lot of his inability to deal with Rengoku comes from his wife. He must have known her philosophy toward strengh, it probably was something they shared. So seeing Rengoku embodying it while he couldn't anymore might be too hard to confront himself to. He probably thinks he's letting her down. Tengen (the Sound Hashira) is a lot to get used to, especially after Rengoku. The slap at the end, while startling, is much more akin to punishing a child. Corporeal punishments were a thing at that time period so that probably what he intended, here. And Shinobu's reaction to him acting like that is a running joke in the fandom and everyone seems to agree that she would be pissed and him, scared! As always, a wonderful reaction <3

Hentai is just Japanese for pervert (or someone who acts inappropriately) The meaning of Hentai in the west is probably what you’re referring to

duver12

By the way, the spanking Tengen gives Aoi has no inappropriate undertones, it's purely disciplinary. This form of physical reprimand was quite common during Japan's Taishō period (1912-1926), especially between masters and subordinates or in training contexts.

We know that the Upper Rank demons have killed Hashira, and we know that they've remained unchanged for over 100 years, so it makes sense that no one from this generation of Hashira has fought one yet (though obviously, previous generations must have). So I think you're right, all current Hashira must have killed a Lower Rank. It honestly never clicked for me that Tanjiro killed a Lower Rank (I initially thought Rui, but it was Giyu who killed him, then I realized Dream/Train guy counted). I think defeating a Lower Rank is ONE of the criteria for becoming a Hashira (since they mention mastering Total Concentration Constant is another). LOVE the reference to Marco's death in AOT. Perfect reference. Absolutely critical to that show's narrative and message, and not enough people acknowledge that. There is a specific reason Muzan was living as this child. There are some clues in this episode, but it's worth thinking about/remembering for the future. Great catch, with the Master's words vs Muzan's words! Never made that connection They did say in that 4 month montage that they'd go on missions in between training, sometimes together, sometimes solo. I think the implication is they did many missions during that time, they just showed 1. Also, we've already seen Tanjiro use several techniques FROM the Hinokami Kagura so far. So he does have several forms, it's just the dance contains multiple.

Wyld89

Oh, also, a line from Tengen (Sound Hashira) that a lot of reactors seem to gloss over was "I need female Corps members for a mission."

DrSophieDarlingReacts

I picked up on that in my intro for the next episode I just forgot to include it in this one! I appreciate the comment but just be careful at giving too much away. You're pointing my attention in specific directions which takes away from me figuring out things for myself. Like directing my attention to why Muzan might be there. Referencing the dance having more than 1 form which I imagine will be a proper reveal later down the line but now you've pretty much confirmed that it contains multiple which spoils the reveal or me figuring it out for myself :') I really want the show to tell me these things and if I don't catch something then I'm sure it'll be highlighted. Again - really appreciate your comment but some aspects of it are dangerously close to spoiling with one being technically a spoiler because it's not been revealed!

Wyld89

My apologies! I'm usually more careful than that. For future reference, I see the "Muzan living as a child" comment went to far, are the other comments there too much as well? I feel like those are limited to things that either happened in the episode or happened previously, but if those are too spoiler-ly I can make sure not to do that either

DrSophieDarlingReacts

Majority of what you said was perfectly fine! Just the dance being multiple forms was a minor spoiler and directing my attention to Muzan a little further mentioning clues is just a bit too much of a hint but doesn't spoil anything just more has me speculating a little more than I was! Other than that everything else was not an issue! :D

Oh, chill ..what you skipped at the beginning was part of the episode, not the intro haha. The intro starts at the end of the episode, and starting with the next episode, it’s at the beginning as usual. It’s a little confusing, but that’s often the case with a lot of first episodes in anime. Also, the final episode for s2 runs for 32 minutes

I really love your insight on the former Flame Hashira. It’s honestly so refreshing to see FINALLY someone actually dive into the psychology of Rengoku's dad instead of just writing him off as a massive jerk. And don't get me wrong folks, his behavior is totally infuriating, especially how he disrespected Kyojiro 🤬 and completely ignored Senjuro's grief 👎, but your breakdown adds some much-needed nuance to his character. I think your theory about his coping mechanisms is spot on. He’s clearly drowning in helplessness. It makes total sense that he gave Kyojiro and Senjuro the cold shoulder just to push them away from the Demon Slayer path so they don't end up dead, too. As for the torn pages in the Flame Hashira chronicles, my lips are sealed on whether Muzan is involved, I will neither confirm nor deny your theory haha! 📖🤐 That being said, It is also entirely plausible that finding out from those records that Sun Breathing is the OG, ultimate technique, that realization probably hit his ego hard. Feeling completely inferior and powerless against his own demons could easily trigger that kind of deep resentment. It could perfectly explains why he went full rage-mode, ripped the book apart, and tried to eliminate the evidence of his shortcomings and banish the existence of those superior or legendary swordsmen from his mind and his household.

Damn... I shouted aloud i bit too much at the beginning about intro not being an intro but the part of the episode 😅😂. How come nobody warned you before in the comments (angry glance at the others in the comments)? Not that you missed much though:) About the spanking - i tried to look up why he did it, because he is 23(i think) and the girl is 14-ish, and couldn't find definitive answer. The one the other comment mentioned about disciplinary action, but it doesn't really sit with me, and the other version that it was just for a fun moment, and to show how flamboyant Sound Hashira is. As Japanese culture does differ a lot from western one, and knowing this tv show and how genders are depicted here, i wouldn't take it as something weird. Also had the same face when heard them saying hentai😂, and had to stop and google definition because damn... Why couldn't they have translated it in the subtitles 😭?! And of course the scenes with Senjuro and his father... Creators are dicks...🥲.

DrSophieDarlingReacts

Well there shouldn't have been an option to skip the intro 😂 No one warned because I doubt there's really much as the intros are a minute at most.

DrSophieDarlingReacts

Would have been nice to get a heads up earlier though because kinda can't go back now 🙈

Ilurandir

By the way, on the subject of person in flashbacks(i haven't seen much further so also wandering) about being related/not related, i think they are related, just because of the chaotic hair and the reddish colour of it, the same as Tanjiro.

Antonio

It's been a while since I rewatched Demon Slayer and I only added the intro information because you manually skipped it, there was no Skip Intro button. This episode's was just creepy kid Muzan picking out a book and walking home with it with some sweeping orchestral music.

Mina E.D

Yeh I think for this one, the important part(Muzan reveal) wasn't missed so its okay.

Mickael Landry

I want to give you a heads-up about something that stirred up quite a bit of drama at the time of the episode release in the Demon Slayer fandom and I think you should know about it. When Tengen Uzui decided to spank Aoi Kanzaki, it completely split the Demon Slayer fandom down the middle.  ⚖️ People had wildly different takes, and the whole moment triggered a massive, polarizing debate.🫯 ❌️ A lot of fans were totally uncomfortable with it. They called it out as an unnecessary, demeaning physical assault that just shouldn't have been in the show. ✅️ On the flip side, other viewers defended him. They argued it wasn't sexual or malicious at all, just a classic, exaggerated anime "disciplinary love tap." All this to say, right as the Entertainment District Arc was kicking off, a TON OF PEOPLE 👥️👥️👥️👥️ already had a pretty negative view of Tengen.

Blackguard4

What I love about Senjuro giving Tanjiro the sword guard of his brother Kyojuro, is that even though he can't become the next Flame Hashira, the Flame Hashira will still be represented where ever Tanjiro goes.

Leah Henderson

I felt the same way about Rengoku's father throughout my viewing that you did. Some ways of coping are harmful, but it can be hard to dig yourself out without guidance - especially if you're in denial or unwilling to face the grief/trauma (as he so clearly is if he's drowning himself in drink). So I saw that from him right away, too, even if I was also angry with him for saying those things! I'm a couple episodes ahead, and I'm so excited for you to see what's next. This is an interesting and amusing arc so far!

Buzzard

From here on out, Demon Slayer becomes a bit like Apothecary Diaries. It'll drop a few hints while raising even more questions.

Gpinko

You didn't miss much in the intro you skipped, but it could've given a bit of an idea for a later episode. In Demon slayer, usually the first episode of a new arc doesn't have the OP song, it's at the end. So for the next arc just keep that in mind, and again, ti will be long just like this one. I know you skip the OPs and EDs for most series due to spoilers, but I do hope you watch them at least one time through! Whether on camera or off. Haha everyone has the same reaction to Tengen's slap. Different times, different context. He is a different vibe than Rengoku but I think you're gonna love him! Our boys have another mentor figure to go on an adventure with. Soooo excited for this arc!

Welcome to the Entertainment District arc!!! Coming off the Mugen Train arc, you would think that nothing will ever top it but I was glad to be proven wrong. The Entertainment District arc is my favourite arc in the story. Every character got their moment to shine as you’ll see later on. I’ve read the manga beforehand and every chapter had me on the edge of my seat! It also took me a little while to warm up to Uzui but by the end of this arc, he quickly became one of my favourite characters. He’s rough around the edges but his heart is in the right place. As always, I love your discussion about the differences in how the Master and Muzan treats their subordinates. The Master treats them as family while Muzan just wanted results. I do feel bad for Rengoku’s father, having to lose his wife and now his son. It’s awful that he took it out on his sons while Rengoku was still alive though. I understand that different people grieve differently but it’s sad that he could’ve spent that time bonding with his sons…

Ryuuji Gremory

While I agree she doesn't deserve it, technically she just got done disobeying/refusing orders from her superior.
