Thank you for saying Maomao isn't heartless but I knew you would. We know this. She is harsh because she grew up in a harsh environment. Luomen may have experienced harsh life events but he still grew up a noble. He was for the better part of his life sheltered and privileged. Therefore he was able to focus on his obsession and used it to help people. Maomao doesn't have that luxury plus she's a woman. Maomao got so much hate in episode 3 and I feel like it's so unwarranted. Some also argued that she's actually privileged enough and would be able to manage to get the 2 girls a job in the rear palace because she has Jinshi and Lakan as backers. But I think they fail to understand that Maomao isn't the type to ask for help to solve her problems unless she knows she has a way to compensate for it. She would take help if offered but will not go out of her way to seek it. She will instead try to save herself. So I won't really expect her to do it for other people who have nothing to offer in return. But she does offer some help anyways and only because she knows the girl will work for it herself, instead of forever begging people for favors. As for the plague, I don't think the Shi Clan is engineering it. I don't think Shenmei was smart enough for that and Shishou was too passive to even plan the coup directly. I think it was more that during thei production of the Feifa, they inadvertedly started causing it. The Shihoku region were experiencing it first hand because of that and thank god they had a smart doctor and an insect savant in their midst who got concerned enough. It's not a full on large-scale plague yet because they've been able to manage the smaller ones with the methods in the book. However Shisui knows that when their clan gets terminated, that knowledge will be lost with them and that's why she left clues for Maomao and Jinshi.

I could not help instinctively feeling a twinge of annoyance toward Maomao those couple of times in 3x3 even while I reasoned the same things that you perfectly articulated. We know her by now and we see her good soul. The circumstances are what need to be changed, but no one here has the power to change them, so they must all get by as they can. That scene where the older sister fought back and went to the well with determination made me emotional on both watches. *whew* Episode 3x4: I love that you called the White Lady's albinism and then immediately questioned it only to be proven right! Don't doubt yourself, queen! XD Although anime hair do be like that, so it was a solid second guess lol

I also felt that same annoyance and had to stop myself a little because Maomao's upbringing and that of the other girls is not a luxurious one :( As you said, the system needs to change but none of them have the ability to do it so they can only do what's necessary to survive within it!

I do recall you being on twitter. I noticed it the account was gone when I tried tagging it when recommending your reactions.

Some historians have theorized that hallucinations caused by consuming ergot tainted bread started the Salem witch hysteria in 1692.

3x3: you hit the nail on the head when you talked about Maomao being in a unique position. Yes, she has experience firsthand the business transactions of the Verdigris House and the way courtesans are treated as commodities but she also has privileges that the other girls don’t have. Luomen taught her about medicine and gave her the opportunity to work as an apothecary with these skills and her connection with Jinshi helped her escape being a courtesan (when he bought her out). Having Lakan as her father also gave her an advantage even if she doesn’t like him. I don’t expect Maomao to help out every poor and unfortunate people she encounters but it’s still hard to see her sold the girls into the Verdigris House when she had the choice to escaped from it. While life as a courtesan may seem better than staying at their abusive father, the older sister still has to work twice as hard to keep her sister from being one. Comparing the way the sisters were treated to how Maomao was thinking about Chou-u’s future job possibilities and even how Sazen got to work safely at the Verdigris House made the sisters’ fate seem even bleaker… 3x4: welcome aboard Maomao/Shisui ship! It’s nice to see more people appreciating their relationship haha! Maomao’s memories of Shisui being shown like a “dead wife flashback” is so accurate lol. I think both the locust plague and the White Lady’s appearance are too coincidental not to be connected so we’ll have to wait and see!

But that's also the point :( There's more opportunities for men and boys than women and girls. The structure is rigged against them from the get go and Verdigris House offers the safest alternative for both girls, even if it is also far from the ideal option. Men can hold different jobs and earn but women are still tied to this idea of marriage and only being worth what they can offer to men either in relation to producing children or offering themselves. It's just a sad depiction of what women had to endure and Maomao's own recognition that the structure is not one they can escape from, they lack the power to change it, but she can offer her an escape that's better than being forced to walk the streets where the risk of death and infection are more extreme.

WondrousMay

Yeah, I guess there’s a small comfort knowing the girls will be taken care of.

I love how you remembered the book from the clinic way before Maomao's realization! Also fun to listen to you admitting to jumping on the ShiMao ship haha Maomao has two hands-- she can handle both Jinshi and Shisui. XD interesting theories on how things are connected! can't wait for you to see how things will go this arc. <3

Also they are random beggars, strangers she just happened to meet. Sure if she called in favors that are way beyond her current station she could help them get a better life, but is she supposed to do that for every beggar that knocks on her door? There are hundreds if not thousands just like them. Or do those two girls get special treatment just because the viewer saw their plight and everyone else in the same circumstances doesn't matter because we don't see their sob story? Also Zulin, the younger sister, is too young to work at the rear palace, so either they have to change rules for her or she just has to get taken care off because Maomao asked.

I saw a comment on TikTok that pissed me off, it was something like "why didn't Maomao talk to Jinshi to make the girl a court lady?". Did we watch the same anime? To step foot into the palace you have to be from a decent family, even as a servant. And she can't just ask him for random stuff unrelated to a problem they're trying to solve.
