We fear the unseen more than the known, the secretive more than familiar. And what is more estranged to us than the leagues that spawn beyond the starry sky? The Void Church was built on top of a lonely hill, near the town. Its chaplain – a rich merchant turned zealot in his olden days –  wanted to placate the wrath of beings no one ever saw or heard. He said it was the only way to save the town from annihilation. Local politicians and clergymen alike used to jeer at him in the street and make fun of his unconventional devotion to indescribable gods. However, one day, the construction was suddenly halted. This time, when night fell, none of the workers came back to town. The chaplain didn’t either. Something had happened up there, on the hill. This same night, you were tasked to investigate.

The Stars Below (Excavation variant): After many years of service, the chaplain passed away. The cult was disbanded. The church, though not forgotten, was abandoned. It became one of these local ghost stories everyone heard but nobody knows the truth. The story of the Void Church and the promise of valuable relics hidden in its ruins caught the ear of a nearby brigands’ leader. Armed with shovels and pickaxes, a dozen men were sent to excavate the old religious site in search for heirlooms and gold. They did not find any treasure...it found them.

Creeping Revelation (Shadows variant): The chaplain was right: there IS something beyond that watches us. It is no creature though, nor singular entity. It is more akin to a boiling mass, a crawling chaos with dark intent, unseen, unheard, yet unfathomably powerful. And the church WAS what kept it at bay for so long. However, with the cult now foolishly disbanded, the thing awakens. Its powers, sapped for decades, are growing back. It slowly turns its attention towards the town. It must be put back to sleep as soon as possible! Once fully conscious, the thing won’t be stopped. It cannot be stopped.
