Hoardblemish remarked. "Is that young lady an elf?”
“No," I replied testily. "No she is not.”
“Fiona, stop that!” Rebecca exclaimed as Fiona began ecstatically licking the stone slab.
“Is- is she all right?” Hoardblemish wondered as Rebecca and the other witches pried Fiona away from the Gate.
“Definitely not…” I grumbled.
“You mentioned earlier that you wanted to enroll all three girls-” Hoardblemish began nervously.
“So, how does the stone circle work??” I blurted quickly, to change the subject.
“Ah," Hoardblemish replied proudly. "It’s a simple matter of entering the circle at the right spot and circumambulating the Gate thrice widdershins before entering. Miss Staircrawly will demonstrate.”
The spider entered the circle and jogged three laps around the Gate, then darted through the dolmen and disappeared.
"Astounding!" I declared. "How did you discover this?"
"Simply a matter of trial and error," Hoardblemish explained. "I had a few clues to go on. Legends state that these stones are an entrance to the Faerie Kingdom, and the bit about circling thrice widdershins is common in folklore. It was just a matter of finding the right spot to enter the circle."
We all followed the spider's path, and in a few minutes everyone was standing inside an obscure wing of the Persoc Tor Winter Palace.
"Welcome to the Hoardblemish Academy of the Art & the Science," Hoardblemish announced dramatically.
“I’m here," Fiona squealed, breaking the awed silence that had fallen over everyone else. "I’m finally here. Sweet, merciful heavens, I may faint!”
“Please do,” Harriet quipped.
“Theriouthly,” Basil concurred.
I did not like the idea that lowfolk were able to pass this Gate at will, but decided it was best to keep quiet. This Hoardblemish character would bear close watching.
"So tell me about the school," I prompted.
"I wonder how you even heard of us, Mr. Young," Hoardblemish began sheepishly. "We've only just started..."
"Word travels fast in my circles," I stated mysteriously. "When I got wind of your plans, I knew I had to investigate for myself."
"I'm fairly well connected in the world of the occult," Hoardblemish muttered, "yet I've never heard of you nor your coven of witches."
"Clearly we operate much more clandestinely than you do," I sniffed. "If you require a magickal demonstration to prove our credentials, that can be arranged. But for now, please - tell me about the school."
"Well, we've er, cleaned out a couple of rooms to provide quarters for each of us, and there's a makeshift lecture hall in what was either a chapel or a small theatre. The Lady Edessa is not very forthcoming with information about this place."
"Edessa??" I exclaimed. So it was true! She was here, and had been talking to these lowfolk! She knew nearly nothing about the Palace because, as far as I could recall, she had spent little or no time here. "Who's that?" I added, before Hoardblemish could get suspicious.
"She is our librarian. We found her in the library when we discovered the place. She is the only living soul we've encountered so far, and seems to be surrounded by an air of tragedy, as if she was the last of her kind. I have never seen her leave the library. She's not very communicative, but she told us we were welcome here and that she was the Queen of the elves. They don't lie, you know."
"MY LONG LOST MOTHER IS HERE???" Fiona yowled with delight.
"I would like to meet this librarian of yours," I declared, as the other witches subdued Fiona. "Tell me more about the school’s financial situation. What about potential reconstruction and refurbishment of the building’s structures? It all looks a bit dusty and run-down at the moment. How many students and staff? What are the school's most urgent needs?"
"Er, well, at present we're operating on our personal funds, which should see us a good long way since Edessa charges us nothing for the use of the facility. We only have to pay for food and necessities, which we buy in Percysthorpe. As far as tidying up the place, students and faculty are all expected to help out ... and hopefully tuition will provide funds to pay for whatever work we can't do ourselves. Our faculty and staff, as well as our student body, consist at present of MacMath, Staircrawly, and myself. I know a necromancer who might be willing to join up, but he will take some convincing. I don't think I flatter myself too much when I say I'm a dab hand at ceremonial magick and alchemy. The others are still learning, but MacMath shows great promise in wards and bindings, and Staircrawley's a natural with offensive spells."
"Is that like makin fart noises an bad smells?" Burnside asked with sudden interest.
"No, more like attacking a foe with sparks or magic missiles," Hoardblemish clarified.
"Hmph. Knives is better."
"The library contains a wealth of occult information which we've barely begun to explore," Hoardblemish continued. "So far we haven't been able to convince Queen Edessa to teach, but perhaps over time she'll warm up to us.."
"I wouldn't count on it," I remarked drily without thinking.
"To sum up, Mr. Young, our school's most urgent need is ... well ... everything."
