My bet is on the axe. Close quarters takes the sword length benefit out. (I trained to use a combat hatchet as a CQB weapon. Yes I do have a particular set of skills.)

As someone that dabbled in historically reconstructive martial arts, while the axe would be good for hooking the weapon and you can better control it by way of manuipulating the haft, halfswording would allow the same.

True. When using the hatchet I try to get inside your guard. Choke up on the handle to the blade then use it like a knife. I have an SOG combat tomahawk. Halfswording is a good counter move. A common use of the long broadsword.
