I yelled as a disturbing thought crossed my mind. "Is there a newel post at the bottom of this staircase?"

"Prob'ly so," she shouted back. "But I reckon we got us a bigger problem!"

I looked around her to see the dullahan standing at the foot of the stairs with his mace at the ready. How did it get there?? Could that thing pook too, or did it take a shortcut?

"REVERSE!" I yelled and frantically scrambled back up the handrail. Burnside's feet made a strange bongo-like sound on the wood as she scurried up behind me, just narrowly evading the dullahan’s mace.

Back at the top of the stairs, we dove out of the nearest window into an alley. I quickly composed a feather-fall Gramarye but luckily our fall was broken by the plush seat of a gaudy and ridiculous looking machine that happened to be parked right under the window. It looked like one of those newfangled lowfolk antless carriages with the name ‘Conundrum Contraption’ painted prominently on the front.

The dullahan dove out of the same window, but somehow (perhaps because it didn't use the same Gramarye I had) it managed to land upside-down in a rain barrel. Burnside and I took the opportunity to rush back into the street, where we spotted the rest of the group all running towards the palace.

The recording of Johnny Six-Gills blared on. How long WAS this song??

"Shadows loom in every corridor

But we’ve gotta make it out the other door

Just run into my arms and our love will see us through

Just run into my arms and our love will see us through

doo doo doo doo"

All of us managed to join up and collectively make a mad, terrified dash towards the royal palace. Being naturally quick on my feet, I got to the head of the group and led the way to the palace entrance. I fumbled with the door, only to realize it was locked.

“Wait! It’s lock-” I blurted before the whole group crashed into me, squishing me against the doors, which were promptly ripped off their old rusty hinges. Everyone landed in a tangled heap, just inside the palace entrance, with me at the bottom of the pile. In the dim light I noticed a piece of paper stuck to the bottom of Burnside’s foot. The paper bore the heading ‘Inventory Manifest’ but I was too exhausted and irritated to read the whole thing.

The fishy music began to fade (at last!!) as the song drew to a close.

"The ghost retreats, freedom’s just in view

With you beside me, there’s nothing we can’t do… doo doo doo doo!"

“I… Hate… Conundrums…” I wheezed from beneath the pile of mixed lowfolk, Burnside, Folly-La, and Rebecca.

>Adler: You all lay in the pile, fearful but too tired to run. You all wait for the inevitable shriek of the dullahan and hiss heavy armored footfalls. Moments become minutes and all you can hear is the oppressive silence that was present before this mad chase started. You break the silence with an irritated gasp. “Please get off of me… I can feel my vitals being crushed by at least four different people…” >Rebecca: You kick your legs uselessly, your upper half is buried deep in the pile. Your voice is muffled, but barely intelligible. “My lord, please don’t cave into the skunk stereotype. My face is in a very compromised position.” >Burnside: “Yeah, well someone’s elbow is poking me in the liver.” You complain. >Ralph: “Slovenly, your hoof is jabbing me in the spleen.” >Slovenly: “Like, I can’t move my arms, man.” >Phoebe: “What does a spleen even do?” >Burnside: “The spleen filters your blood stream to remove dead and damaged blood and to get rid of diseases and infections.” >Rebecca: “How do you know that?” >Burnside: “I know lots about folks insides.” >Maeve: “I think this is kinda nice. I feel really cuddly right now.” >Folly: “Merthy thaketh Thlovenly!” You declare triumphantly as you stand atop the pile. >Adler: “Less talking and more getting up, please!” You try to say forcefully, but it comes out as a breathy wheeze. Everyone’s weight is pushing the air out of your lungs. >Adler: It takes far longer than it should, but after a lot of untangling, popping joints, sore muscles, and aching limbs everyone is finally free and standing. You and Rebecca were tangled the worst. After some very silly shenanigans, you two were finally untangled, but somehow your outfits were swapped. >Rebecca: “That’s not a bad look for you, my lord.” You giggle out. Adler’s outfit is humorously undersized on you. >Adler: “Not in the mood, Rebecca…” You mumble out as you rub your temples. By Fuma, this ‘adventure’ is giving you a headache. >Burnside: “EW!!! Did I step in someone’s bog paper??” >Adler: “That’s a clue! Give it here.” >Burnside: “You think used bog paper is a clue?” >Adler: “Just give it.” >Burnside: “Suit yourself, just warsh your hands after.” >Adler: You read the paper and announce your findings. “This appears to be a very detailed inventory manifest. Plaster bones, inflatable rubber props, magickally animated statues, sound devices, illusion casting devices disguised as everyday items, pyrotechnics, a steam powered mechanical termite, and unbelievable amounts of canned food… There is a name signed at the bottom. Eltsac Mailliw? Is that a vulpitanian name? The vulpitanians are involved? Why? Are they trying to prevent the city from being rebuilt? I know those coniving foxes love being needlessly obtuse, but this is a bit much even for them. I am simultaneously relieved and enraged that this whole debacle is a complete fraud… You lowfolks are good at finding ‘clues’. Did you grab anything good while we were running?” >Ralph: “Only stuff that supports your clue. I found this brittle plaster bone.” >Phoebe: “I found this stuffed doll that looks like the dullahan. There were more too. It’s cute!” >Maeve: “A dullahan doll? How odd. I found this pen that creates an illusion of a ghost. No doubt some fascinating technology this mad genius made in secret.” >Adler: “Magick is real, it’s not technology… And I definitely wouldn’t call whoever is behind this a genius.” You say in exasperation. >Slovenly: “Aw man… All I found is this crumby book.” You carelessly throw the book over your shoulder out of sight. (Much later Adler found out that book was titled ‘My Master Plan by: Eltsac Mailliw’, much to his later annoyance.) >Rebecca: “My lord, you should come and see this.” You call from another room. >Burnside: “HOO BOY! You never looked so good, Adler honey!” >Adler: “Oh, come on!” You say as you see what you subordinates are looking at. You see a very unflattering statue depicting you as a bloodthirsty warlord standing on a pile of corpses with the plague of battles in one hand and the severed head of your brother in the other. ‘Mad Adler II, Pretender to the Throne.’ There is a button on a stand in front of the display.
