I love that this isnt the first time that heather mentioned that if we're living in a simulation that it would be for her benefit 😂😂

Bucky Larson had the most annoying commercials cuz they were narrated by one of the characters doing a dumb voice that’s burrowed into my brain and I still confused it with Dickie Roberts.

I’m only now up to the anime being selected - and it’s what I feared, a show I remember liking being picked, and now fearing it not living up to my memory! I’m excited to see how it goes. A show that was sometimes very action-y, sometimes very talk-y, and always with the uncertainty of who could be trusted! Excited to see if that comes across in 1 ep!

So Rokka was a show I liked back when it aired a decade or so ago, but haven’t revisited. So definitely not something I’d call a favourite, but I do remember it maybe more kindly. Normally I steer very clear of the generic fantasy type shows, and especially the fan-service-y ones, as I find them boring. But Rokka’s first ep had some cool animation/action, as Adlet is setup as perhaps not the strongest but quite inventive and uses tools to fight. And it’s exactly as Heather guessed, 6 chosen heroes are supposed to congregate and travel to fight some Demonlord, and at the designated meeting place 7 turn up, and they all get trapped in the area by the fog. So the “7th” is suspected as an agent of the demon lord who is trying to delay their quest. So the whole show is people turning on one another, building tentative alliances that get questioned while they know one of them is a traitor. So it’s lots of twist-y nonsense and betrayal, but I remember it being fun. Inconsistent with animation as you saw, but that doesn’t bother me too much, I lived through the 90’s and 2000’s as an anime fan, I’m used to shows that took all these kinds of shortcuts and got used to off model character designs. I felt that some of its positives outweighed the negatives just enough for me to enjoy it at the time - but wont be revisiting it.

I do remember watching this many years ago and even though it’s not the best show I’ve seen I remember liking the premise and the short self-contained mystery. The season is short and the “traitor” is revealed at the end.

Laughing so hard when nick said id be surprised if anyone had seen this. I have seen this.

Dynamite In The Brain

Popeye magazine is named after the sailor man. There's also the magazine Brutus still going, and Olive that ended publication.

If you spend even one more minute talking about Star Wars, I’m unsubscribing from the Patreon and blocking Matt on Letterboxd. Also please do JJBA: Stardust Crusaders 🙏 Only two things on this podcast have broken my heart, Heather saying that JoJo is not “her aesthetic”, and also Heather saying that she fell off Hellblade and started playing God of War Ragnarok instead 🤮 Nick rocks

Dynamite In The Brain

Rokka is LN fantasy anime sludge that I would have never watched then, and certainly not watching now. I already spent enough time convincing myself Slayers was good in the 90s to repeat that task again. Fantasy anime I would recommend over Rokka: Delicious in Dungeon, Uncle from Another World, Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai and Magical Circle Guru Guru.

Rokka is one of the few shows i watched in my large drought of watching no anime. I binged it with a friend in a day. I remember liking it. It starts out setting up an epic adventure and this just sits in one spot while the characters decend into utter paranoid anxiety for 12 episodes. that being said i cant remember anything about it or any of the characters other than the bunny girl.

Zeon Liberation

Paranoia Agent is the show Nick was talking about by Satoshi Kon. I don’t think he named it.

For a German it's always creepy how germanophil modern Japanese culture is. We're pretty much conditioned to suspect the big bad villain in any media that isn't German or Japanese, when a character has a Germ:an name. But it does explain why right wing incels love certain Anime

BensDecoy

lol at the comment saying they were on volume 3 and still haven’t fought the demon lord. At what point does that person realize that maybe the series isn’t actually about the demon lord?

The collective live reaction to the swamp vomit was chaotic gold and Heather saying this episode was like an anime Survivor reminded me of messing around with an AI image generator I asked it to make an anime Jeff Probst, but it made him super pretty and wearing a very wide brimmed hat for some reason

I too subscribe to the Sunday New York Times! My favorite magazine sub is Nat Geo History. It’s great if you love reading about Roman/Viking/Ancient Egyptian bullshit every other month month.

Cheddar_Goblin

It was funny that Matt said that Flamie’s costume (basically just chest strap) was an attempt to get people to cosplay as that character. Later the same day I got a Spotify rec for Megan Thee Stallion and in the cover art she was wearing very much the same thing (look up her Spotify profile or the single BOA). So I guess it worked? Side note. From what I’ve read, Megan is a huge anime fan and is always cosplaying. Y’all should try to get her on the show

The fan service train hasn't gone far enough, Nick and Matt are right, we need more hog, just peeking, tho, and no tip. Anyway, y'all should watch Castlevania on the pod! It's relevant to both pods! And no I'm not actually Alucard trying to convince you to watch my anime lol P.S. Palpatine fucks.

Mr. Lucy

I may have spoken too soon when I said I hated this in the first episode. A random anime? Great! A random episode? Yuck…However after the last two episodes I realized that the complete chaos of doing that was the hilarious and fun part. I apologize for my negativity and need to learn to trust the process. I absolutely love you guys.

Jack Byrne

This weeks random episode wasn't great, but Laid-Back Camp last week was awesome. I've watched the first 2 seasons, the movie and have completely caught up on the ongoing season since last episode. The show is paced a lot slower than most of the other series I've watched lately, but watching these characters visit monuments and cook camp food is great. Season 2 introduces a drunk mentor character, and she's always fun.

Come for the AniMAYhem, stay for the David Spade IMDB trivia and Star Wars debate. I just wish Jay Leno had time to stop by.

The split second where nick almost said hog instead of fog had me login into crunchyroll

No one: Nick Wiger: "This show could have been hornier."

Kayin, the one and only

As an OG anime guy (circa '95), this is a solid example of why I fell off anime pretty hard after the 2000's, and found it increasingly difficult to get back into, beyond the obvious and much lauded fan favorites. Anime at the time was so hard to get. Like Heather has mentioned before, we scrounged up VHS' and watched everything available in Blockbuster. It meant you watched everything you could; But it was always unlike anything you've seen before. Now though it's like there's too much easily accessible anime, and so so much is just trope filled mediocre candy with cliched and uninspired character designs that look like anything from any generic anime mobile game. Stories that are derivative of everything before it, and forgettable designs that seem designed just to be cosplayed, as Nick points out.

Rachael

How was that episode so long and yet so short at the same time?

Tmacc

Deathnote would be an EXCELLENT choice for a next anime; in fact, I posted suggesting it in a comment a few weeks ago. It is a classic, older anime, and would create super compelling discussions...especially since the boys haven't seen it. The morals of the show are so intense, and we really haven't watched anything like it on the podcast so far. As far as how my piece has been going, I started reading the One Piece manga when Wiger's Piece started, been reading at least one chapter a day, and I'm on Chapter 70 right now! My best pal who has watched the entire anime has also been reading along with me, so he's had fun revisiting it. Very breezy and enjoyable read so far.

Numlocks

Please for the love of God don’t do any more Star Wars please God. Also Laid Back Camp is the best show I've ever seen.

Notrock

The past two weeks are proof how little a "good" premise actually matters. A backyard camp out was somehow more engaging than a high fantasy vomit fight.

David Mucci

I agree that this show seems like an interesting concept but with poor execution — and somehow I don’t think we just happened to watch an inordinately talky episode of an otherwise action-packed anime. Another commenter, Andy, mentioned that Flamie’s costume is similar to what Megan Thee Stallion wears on her new single (evidently a very revealing Boa Hancock cosplay). I just wanted to point out that the music video for the song, though, is filled with a ton of references (mostly to video games, but to some anime as well). Worth a watch!

Jesse

I thought we might be in for another good ride - starting off with the swamp barfing little girl - but then the show committed a cardinal sin when it comes to discussing media: it got boring as hell. Can't praise it for being fun, can't joke at it's expense. Classic mood killer.

William

I love the podcast. I've been listening since the beginning and I started watching One Piece when Nick said he was going to start. I have now watched all of it and caught up on the manga. If you want to cover Deathnote I'd highly recommend the stage musical. It is better than the anime and I am not kidding. https://youtu.be/k1W7AuSWHaY?si=DT3-EdULLIhBfeFB

This has been such a weird AniMAYhem. I don’t think I watch that much anime and YET all 3 shows randomly picked are ones I’ve watched (and enjoyed). The Showa show was on all of the hidden gems lists for that year and I loved how artsy and old-timey it is (you don’t see that a lot in anime), kind of like a PBS drama. Laid back camp is classic cute girls doing cute things, which I am a bit of a sucker for (ever since K-On stole my heart). And now Rokka?! This was one of the first anime’s I watched when I got back into anime in the mid 2010s. It’s totally Big Brother + generic fantasy anime, but I remember loving it when I watched it the first time. It kind of got me back in the anime scene (although Puella Magica Madoka is really what pulled me back in). Btw, I would highly recommend Puella as a show for Get Animed. It’s only 12 episodes, an amazing, twisty story that goes to places you wouldn’t imagine from watching the first episode, and has amazing animation throughout the entire run. And it’s got real Evangelion vibes. A lot of people say it’s the Evangelion of magical schoolgirl animes. Highly recommended!

Lark

Nick’s ep of Blank Check on Paranoia Agent was great, and probably more fun than rewatching that sometimes tough to watch series. If you haven’t listened to Black Check’s series on Hayao Miyazaki you’re really missing out. I concluded that The Wind Rises was my favorite Miyazaki, dethroning Spirited Away, which was my first.

Dynamite In The Brain

FYI the site being used to generate the random show is lacking much of the anime from Crunchyroll. It's not scraping the site, and so it's at the whims of the time and taste of the webmaster. https://www.crunchyroll.com/random/anime is the still working random anime URL that used to be on the CR front page. That should give a broader range of results and you won't be stuck watching shows from the last decade.

I think yall should combine Nick and Heather's pitches and cover two Anime series together each week for the first time after AniMAYhem. Every week the show would cover 1 episode of Death Note and 1 episode of Laid-Back Camp. This suggestion is not a joke it would be incredible imo

Cal O'Boyle

Having just fiiiiiiiiiiinally beat it and now being fully addicted to perpetually failing at the permadeath mode I implore you to play Hollow Knight! It’s just too good.
