As mentioned before, i dont like beach-- but boy do i like digging holes. 10 years ago my father re-fenced his entire backyard and my job was digging up the posts whose wood had rotten from deep in the ground. That summer i got to dig the deepest holes ive ever dug. What a time. Happy holidays.

Please can you guys cover some more classic series instead of modern streaming slop? One episode of Gurren Lagann is such a tease. :(

Back in 2007, like many others, I was obsessed with this show when it aired. Importing soundtracks and anything else I could spend my money on. It’s an incredible show that moves at such a phenomenal rate, and always impressed that a show that on the surface seems like it’s just about cool moments and animation then manages to also hit the emotional beats that it gets to later in the show. I’m definitely all for the show being covered in full/more episodes, as always excited to revisit this series.

Dynamite In The Brain

Nakashima's plays are not that far from Gurren Lagann in tone. For a while Netflix had recordings of his Seven Souls in the Skull Castle series of plays available to watch. Other ways to see his plays in some form include the anime series "Oh! Edo Rocket" and the film "Ashura-jo no hitomi" (released as Ashura in the UK). More importantly for Gurren Lagann though, is the fact he was an editor of Ken Ishikawa, whose Getter Robo series is a major inspiration on this series.

Dynamite In The Brain

On the topic of treasure hunting, there are multiple anime that make jokes at the expense of Mother creator Shigesato Itoi's attempts to find the Tokugawa Gold. Episode 22 of Samurai Champloo "Cosmic Collisions" was the first time I encountered the story, and it features a villain based on Itoi. The most comprehensive parody is in Wacky TV Nanana, where the entire second season is dedicated to parodying the TV show "Gimme a Break" that documented Itoi's treasure hunting in their "Shigesato Itoi and the Tokugawa Buried Gold Excavation Project"

Chihayafuru next week?! Heck yes! Another favourite of mine, also. Looking forward to hearing how Matt gets on with just the pilot, as as I recall, the first 3 episodes act as the kind of prologue for the whole series, setting up the main trio and their relationship, etc. so the show as it were doesn’t really demonstrate what it’s going to be until a few episodes in. Still a great first episode from what I remember anyway though, so super excited for any Chihayafuru discussion.

Just do the whole show! Matt will be destroyed!

When my wife was in hour 36 (out of 37) of labor with our daughter she was feeling wrecked physically and emotionally and was about to throw in the towel and ask for a c-section, something she had wanted to avoid at all costs. She said she couldn’t go any further and wanted to give in. Not knowing how else to console her, I told her to keep going, and then without thinking said “If you don’t believe in yourself, believe in me, because I believe in you and I know you’re strong enough.” She held off on calling for surgery, thankfully progressed fast after that, and our baby was born an hour later. Afterward my wife thanked me for the encouragement to not quit. I now can never share one of my favorite pieces of art with the love of my life because she would find out that I straight up stole that line, and I need her to believe I came up with that off the dome in her time of need. (I’m still definitely going to share it with baby Char Power Siegel at some point.)

Will save (most) of my gushing for this series in the hopes that it gets covered in full on the pod. But I will say that I think it’s a great show to watch in this [gestures at the world] particular moment in time, because at its core I think it’s about what it means to strive to create a better future when the current power structure is dominated by reactionary forces who fear a future they can’t control and want to crush anyone trying to upset the status quo.

Rachael

I know I shouldn't be so moved by the fact that one of my favorite anime shows of all time is also one of Heather's favorite shows of all time, but that parasocial relationship is strong. 🥹❤️

Numlocks

I finished Gurren Lagann this week and it gets so fucking bonkers by the end. You need to finish this show Matt it’s fucking nuts

Before I ever got into anime, I had a boyfriend who tried to get me into anime via Gurren Lagann. of all of them, I'm still not sure why he thought it would be a good fit for someone who had never watched any anime. I remember being completely turned off by the fan servicey elements. My current husband successfully got me interested via Death Note when we were still dating.

Mat Leonard

I love this show, in my top 10. Every episode gets bigger and crazier than the last, for the whole 20+ episode series. I’m down to watch it again.

Grant Prusi

I haven’t watched this in about 15 years, but man it’s just as good as I remember! It’s such an uplifting, motivating show. It also brings to mind Xenogears, which I recently played. There’s an opening cinematic, beautifully animated by Production IG and also set in a space ship, that has no bearing on the plot until about 75% of the way through the game.

Gabriel Cohen

If you ever do more pilots, would love to hear you cover a masaki yuasa pilot!

Mr. Lucy

Can I give a bit of constructive criticism? I want to watch the show before the podcast comes out. Yet it’s an audio podcast and you want me to spell Gurren Lagann off of how you said it?! And now Chihayafuru? Siri thinks I’m having a stroke! Can you guys at least spell it for us? Then tell us where it’s available? Or maybe but it in the show notes? Please?

Echo in the Mirror

Does Heather share her MyAnimeList page? Since she mentioned it a number of times this episode I'm curious to see what her scores look like.

Jack Byrne

This show looks like Barney compared to Hiroyuki Imaishis next show.

crystalhearts

this rocks, really like this format. new gundam, terminator, and violet evergarden were fun but I love a lil variety and gurren lagann and chihayafuru are really excellent one-off picks. haven't seen kino's journey but it looks really cool too

DebrafromHR

Matt since you like frog guys, you should watch Sgt. Frog I believe you will find a new "guy"

Michael Pemulis

I've watched a few more Gurren Lagann, and I'm enjoying it. It's like a caffeinated Saturday morning cartoon, for perverts.

Zeon Liberation

Gurren Lagann is amazing but is not for newcomers to anime. As Heather touched on it’s best understood as a response to Eva and really almost as a parody of shonen and mech anime.

Pete Ficken

My vote is on Gurren Lagann! I don’t have much time for anything but work these days, and this one packs in the thrills.

Lark

I watched this pilot back whenever it came out, 15 years ago or whatever, and bailed due to my strong aversion to "fan service". Watching it now with fresh eyes and Heather's recommendation, I'm probably gonna watch this whole show.

Rae Watney

So over a year ago in the spirit of embracing life and new things, I quit my job and now work as a board game distributor. I bring this up now as our company is releasing the first retail version of Gwent :D. This might not have happened without Haruhi Suzumiya, which I may never have watched without Get Played. I will be celebrating by watching Akiba Maid War for the 19th time.

BiPolarBear

This show definitely has my vote. Already on episode 10 and itching for a Get Anime'd on this series. We definitely need Wiger present for all the sweater puppies.

LagerB

Thanks for keeping things going even though y’all are having a lot of life disruptions right now. Hope things calm down in 2025 and y’all can get back in the studio together

john Smith

this is one of my favorite shows ever and since you may never do the whole show i just gotta drop this fact. the guest animation style for episode 4 was so controversial it ruined a guys career and the only comment i ever read from him was that the audience reaction to it was like having someone press their anus to his lips and farting and I think about that comment constantly.

NonsenseSynapse

Following up on the folks who were suggesting the Blue Lock manga last week. I wanted to read Blue Lock after being bummed out by season 2’s animation, but was disappointed it isn’t in the shonen jump app - only to discover I can borrow it from the library and read on my iPad using the Libby app!

Riley Snowdon

PLEASE COVER DANDADAN!! I’ve been watching the shit out of Dandadan with my bf and we absolutely love it. I know it’d be Heather and Matt’s shit, Nick’s onto something for real

Coy_o_Coy

Main Earth Company…or MEC They just can’t get away from these big robots on this show and I love it

XRedGambit

I started watching this show years ago and got sidetracked after ep 4. I'm now starting to rewatch it and I'm already 9 deep after a week. Though episode 4 was sus on quality and 6 was almost a clip show.

Zoe Elise

I've been wanting to watch this anime but have shelved it for this reason or that .. with Heather and Matt's stamp of approval, I would love a full series dive with each of your opinions and interpretations. I got so much more into Evangelion based off of y'all's episodes and was absolutely delighted to hear your takes on Haruhi Suzumiya. Thank you all so much for providing this content that speaks directly to me!!

Angelo M

This show is awesome! I would definitely do a rewatch if you discuss this series
