Heather, Nick and Matt discuss episodes 3 & 4 of Gurren Lagann!

Did Nick say he shot guns as a boy scout? As a non American that's insane to me.

Anybody else not getting this in their app RSS feeds this morning? Is there a new link I should be using in lieu of the acast one?

Just a heads up for anyone watching the show for the first time: the episode 6 on most streamers is a janky bowdlerized clip show and not the actual episode, because the actual episode 6 was deemed too spicy to even be aired in Japan. If you don’t have the show on physical media you may need to put on your 2007 hacker pants and use LEGITIMATE METHODS to see the real thing.

I started watching this show back around 2010 and bounced off it after an upcoming episode. I'm really enjoying the re-watch so far and can't wait to drill my way to the finale with y'all! Also, Goku and Piccolo getting their driver's licenses might be my favorite filler in all of anime. Both of them dressed up in civilian clothes is priceless.

Listening to Nick talk about Sakamoto Days and the assassin paintball tournament, reminded me that I knew a guy who worked for the DoD as a civilian. He once told me that a bunch of folks in his office were going to do paintball and this included a couple Marines that they worked with. It turned out that the Marines brought sharpies for sneaking up and "cutting" people's throats. Needless to say, the rest of the office had no appetite for paintball after getting completely wrecked by two professional soldiers.

Something I’m realizing during this rewatch is that for as cool as Kamina is, he’s actually bad at being a standard action hero. His only real tactical move is “use overconfidence to do something so stupid the enemies don’t know how to react”, which works well in bursts but gets absolutely demolished by actual fighters like Viral. Kamina’s true skill is as a support/face archetype, inspiring those around him to achieve something greater.

Space is a vacuum, the complete absence of matter. The opposite of the absence of matter is just a whole bunch of matter. What has the most matter crammed into an area? The center of a Black Hole. Black Hole is opposite of Space

Don't do a Star Wars podcast, we already have Doughboys. Also, I love that Heather's character on the show is, oftentimes, an exasperated Elena Ferrante mother who's had it with her shitty kids.

Grant Prusi

Is “Beam Talk” a new segment now? Xenogears has some of my favorite beams. “Beam” even a damage type for mech combat. (I know, this might be more appropriate for the other show, but there are anime sequences in it so I’d say it counts.)

Storyboards in Animation. Adaptation vs original. I know this! Overall the process is mostly the same. Storyboards and Comics/Manga look similar but each have their own visual language. Storyboards have cues and signals included to indicate movement of not only the characters but also the camera and even things out of frame. This helps inform the director and animators of not only what is happening in the shot but how the shot will progress. Zooms, pans, tilts, etc. are established here because the frame itself can move to reveal information unlike with comics where an entirely new panel is required. A single storyboard frame can cover many frames of a manga. Storyboards also tend to be more loose as some elements haven't been finalized yet. The focus is on movement of characters and camera, not design. Some will be just two vague figures in a frame describing their movements. Others will have epic fully rendered key shots. So while having a comic or manga first can help inform a visual style and even specific shots the storyboard is still largely needed to be made to translate it to film and tv. Some incredible examples I would encourage anyone interested in this topic to check out are Akira and Nausicaa which are both anime adaptations that were directed by the person who made the original manga. It is so cool to see how someone chooses to adapt their own creation to another medium and the process of which they go about doing so. Both Miyazaki and Otomo have their own unique approach to not only making a manga but a film too. Despite their differences both are incredibly successful in both the Manga and the film. Hope this answers your curiosity successfully! As an animator I love being able to share my knowledge!

I just started reading the Dragonball manga and in the manga Bulma says she’s 16, and Goku says he’s 14. But Goku is an actual idiot so who knows. Also, Heather how could you not mention bitterballen to Matt for his ball foods.

BlueWRXDriver

We gotta get the Hello Kitty x Gundam episodes on here

Boota is literally a senzu bean. One bite and he restores their energy to the point that the mecha detects a full stomach.

I’m surprised the huge drop in animation quality for episode 4 didn’t come up. Felt like a different show, super static and flat. When I searched for “gurren lagann e” it immediately suggested “gurren lagann episode 4 animation,” so at least I’m not the only one weirded out by it.

Zeon Liberation

The opposite of outer space is inner space.

No one explain the Dragon Ball timeline to Matt! It's part of the magic!

There are several species that will sever their own tail to escape a predator. Most of them are lizards, but there are a few rodents that have skin that falls off if they are touched. This strategy, called caudal autotomy, is supposed to either satisfy a predator’s hunger or surprise them enough for the lizard to escape (the tail keeps moving after it comes off). For many species they regrow the shed tail over time, though it may be discolored or not have as many bones. I think the little guy will be fine.

Listening to Heather talk about her memory of the show versus her current viewing is very similar to the experience I am having re-watching Bubble Gum Crisis. What I remember doesn't feel like the thing I am watching.

XRedGambit

I think you should choose a brand new anime to watch from day one as it's released, after gurran. But instead of 1ep a week, you do the new series every other week so you do the normal 2 episodes and on the off weeks you got a star wars podcast for a limit time.

Jessica Coffield

I have never been more excited than when Nick mentioned Light the Beam. As an adult transplant to Sacramento, it’s been the most exciting thing to happen here and I 100% think of it when they talk about loving beams. Come to Sac - we have a giant space beam!

Geoff Kriz

Did anyone else not have the new episode pop up in the Apple Podcasts app?

Robot House

The tail eating episode was very unpopular at the time iirc and a lot of it was because of the animation quality and that the plot made little sense( might have been the subs of the time) . Or maybe it's because they ate the mascot animals ass . I have skipped it in my rewatches. Oh and its technically not Hello Kitty just Sanrio but Aggretsuko is probably a show you all would enjoy

David Mucci

I thought episode 4 was fine until it turned into Ren & Stimpy…but I’m really here to comment on the Simpsons discussion. I think not only are seasons 3-8 some of the best TV around (a totally new and different opinion, I know) but what always stood out to me is how many of those episodes seem nearly perfect — no wasted words, every line leading to some new joke or development in the story, tons of incredible sight gags. Would be a top 5 show of all time for me had it stopped around then, but I appreciate the commitment to longevity.

The reason Garfield hates Mondays is because that’s the day that Jon (his owner) goes back to work and Garfield is home alone all day (with Odie). As much as he seems like he resents Jon, he misses him! He’s just a big softy under all that attitude and sarcasm. Also- Badtz-Maru has spiky hair because he was modeled after Bart Simpson. They even share the same birthday, April 1st!

Steven_pistachio

Now I want ya to watch Kill la kill- as I know people love it but the fan service make me queasy- ohh and- please watch the opening- they change!

Rachael

Fun fact time! The Japanese voice actor for Viral is the same guy who voiced Link in The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time video game!

SchniedelWutz

Just imagine someone would have said to Shinji "believe in the me, that believes in you" instead of "just get in the fucking robot Shinji".

LagerB

Looking forward to your third podcast, Get Muppet

KidKimura

I'm not necessarily disliking this show, but it does feel like both the plot and character designs are based on the ramblings of a hyperactive toddler.

GapBot 3000 Turbo

Hearing Ranch laughing in the background off mic always makes a joke hit so much harder.

Fantastic

2 characters that have inspired my self confidence throughout life have been Rock Lee and Kamina. Growing up without a dad figure I looked up to characters like these instead to motivate me to believe in the me that believes in my potential

Andrew Ingram

Gurren Lagann is a show that means a lot to me. It’s one of the big ones I watched with my anime club in college. I would’ve thought it too silly to pick it up on my own. It’s one of my best of all time now. I love that group of nerds. I miss them.

Admarant

On the subject of Sanrio anime check out Aggretsuko an anime about a red panda office worker who goes to karaoke after work to work out her stresses by singing death metal

William

Episode 4 is the lowest rated episode of the show pretty universally. Not only is the story nothing but introducing a few characters, but the animation was handled by a guest director and it looks terrible next to the rest of the series.

Mauricio Diocis

Important context about episode 4: Takami Akai, the producer of the series and a co-founder of Gainax, announced that he would resign his position effective episode five, which aired on April 29, 2007, over comments that he made regarding posts on the Japanese Internet forum 2channel. Akai and another Gainax employee, Keiko Mimori, made disparaging remarks about comments criticizing the animation style of the fourth episode of Gurren Lagann, which was completely directed by guest and friend Osamu Kobayashi. With regard to reading the fan criticisms, Akai stated that it was "like putting [his] face next to an anus and breathing deeply." Fans later became aware of his comments, and he announced his departure from the company he helped to found. I have used that insult in my lexicon since I heard it ten years ago or so. Also the parallel works #9 kitten zero is pretty great at setting up who the black siblings before they met the gurren gang and how they eventually come back. The parallel works of gurren lagann is a great little series of shorts of things inspired by or surrounding the main story of gurren lagann, really hard to find but worth the time!

Spare-Time Tuxedo Patrick Goes Looking for Love

ALERT! I wanted to make sure someone mentioned this: There is an uncensored version of episode 6 out there that is even hornier than the clip-show version of the episode available on Netflix or Crunchyroll. The Get Animed crew has got to find it and tell us about it. I watched a couple episodes of Plus Sized Elf on Nick's recommendation, so I know he should be able to handle it.

Jeff Byrne

I was going to suggest the Legacy of Goku games on the GBA for Matt but I'm glad someone beat me to it! Those games are super fun and even though I fell off DBZ pretty early in the show, I still enjoyed every minute of those games when I was younger.

Spudowski

I imagine the Grape Hippo to kind of just pop.in your mouth with a sour pork gristley texture and crunch.

Doc Robot

I broke containment when I accidentally let episode 5 play...then binge watched the entire thing in under a week. No spoilies but wow does this show really keep going. I can totally see how Heather forgot some of the lulls in earlier episodes as the series continues to ask "Who the hell do you think I am!?"

Andrew Ingram

This is for Heather: When they played Jinwoo’s theme for the ant, I fucking lost it. What a show!

Sean Sakimae

Sorry to hijack the Gurren Lagann comments for Solo Leveling, but, s2, e11 ends with a final word (and a look) and I don't know if Heather is caught up, but after spending part of the ep w/my mouth agape, I SHOT up from laying back on my couch and said aloud: "LET'S FUCKING GO!!" (to no one) GL is a lot of damned fun, and if my dog chewed off his ass to keep me alive, of course I'd eat it-- I wouldn't want his sacrifice to have been for nothing. (Thank you, Dodger! I'm sure your boney Weimaraner ass would have been delicious, b/c it would have been filled with love.)

that one guy

When you guys were talking about beams as a Sac local I immediately wondered if Matt knew about THE Beam. I'm glad Nick was in the know! Light the Beam!

Dakota Cahill

Wouldn’t the opposite of space be matter? Or solid particles?
