Big fan of the pod. I don’t watch this particular anime but I love the back and forth of the gang. I really enjoy everyone’s takes and kind of wish that every so often an anime movie is reviewed within a series just to break things up. But that’s my two cents

Boro's awakening... holy shit!

Chad Shaffer

When Boro has a moment of defeat in his head. And sees himself drinking beer in a dark room literally watching his dream die on TV. Then instantly says fuck that! And evolves instead. that was fucking awesome!

What do you all think the Blue Lock of podcasting would be and what would each of you use as your Weapons?

I didn't know Donkey was the worst thing you could call someone in soccer. Shrek would get his ass handed to him in Bluelock!

Two points: 1) if I was casting a live action of this show Nick would be the guy who picks his nose and then is like "Marketing?!?" 2) My two big entertainments of right now are both open with a Bandai Namco production card, Bluelock and Elden Ring (replaying because the announcement of the DLC). This along with how Isagi's approach to rebuilding his idea of soccer feels parallel to how I approach different FromSoft bosses makes me think about Elden Ring character as a starting 11. I'd want Malenia as a Wing/ST and Godrick in Goal, what would you guys go with, either as an 11 or a Bluelock team of 3 for 2nd Selection

I started to get worried that Barou was no longer going to be a deranged alpha, but I’m so glad they had him pivot and become even more of a deranged alpha! I halfway hope that Barou ends up winning Blue Lock.

The delivery of the word donkey is so pure and good. I don't know if it's this way in the sub, but the dub really accentuates the word. It reminds me of the chip eating scene in Death Note. Admittedly, this is less cringy than that scene. But it still features the main characters saying something absolutely insane as if it's the coolest thing ever. Which it is. If you can find the chips scene from death note on YouTube, you gottta Insert that here.

Added context if you don't know the chips scene. Light yagami has cameras in his room at one point that keep him from being able to write in his killer notebook. So he pretends to do homework, and puts a tiny TV inside of a bag of chips. He then declares that every time he sees a fugitive on TV, he will write their name killing them. Then he will "take a chip, and eat it!"

I'm not at all a sport-o, but I happen to also be reading Haikyuu!! right now (great bedtime manga, by the way!). There's a character in Haikyuu who is also called the "king," but in Haikyuu, it's treated as an insult. The character's trying to move past the name, because it means he was too self-centered and neglected the needs of his team. That connotation for "king" is true for Barou - but Barou thinks it's a sweet nickname. Pretty much the difference between Blue Lock and most other sports anime in a nutshell. Also, as a musician and lyricist, trying to deduce the meaning of "numbness like a ginger" has kept me awake at night.

This show fucking rules! I'm sitting here really thinking about the structure of the story and it's such a master stroke. The competition is only strikers, while they are learning to defend and it's not their job in a traditional match so they're bad at it. What does that mean? More goals! And because they're all so good each touch is a guaranteed goal unless the other team pulls some crazy anime nonsense! Possessions become an insanely high stakes all or nothing deathmatch. If they made a league that was nothing but this ala what the xfl was trying to be about I would be a lifelong fan. Great recommendation, this is why you all are the number 1 anime podcast.

I watch a lot of anime, and I’ve got to say…Isagi calling Barou a donkey is probably the tastiest slice of Humble Pie (with a side of Be Nice Cream) I’ve seen served up in a LONG time. You guys fucking rule, thanks for making two of my favorite podcasts for some of my favorite hobbies I have and keeping me company on the lonely rides I endure for work. PS, gonna throw, an anime rec to each of you specifically- Matt/SK8 the Infinity looks like it was designed in a lab for you. Nick/Hells Paradise - wife guy main character, Sekiro vibes and said to be part of the Dark Shonen trifecta (along with JJK and CSM) Heather/Akudama Drive - short and sweet, pure cyberpunk and I think the character “Brawler” may just be your gaming mindset manifested into a being.

I literally screamed "YESSSS" at my TV during this episode when Isagi started popping off and called Barou a donkey. That's some good fucking anime right there. I love how Barou is still himself, but an evolved form with new realizations that push past his previous self, instead of suddenly "a team player" awakening as a "villain on the field." This show portrays ego so well, and in a way I've not seen in almost any other piece of media I can remember.

Hell yes, such exciting eps! Great to see Isagi grasping a better understanding of how eyes work. Barou’s visual representation of the red and black lightning path to the goal reminded me of Sena’s green path from “Eyeshield 21,” dodging defenders As for sports anime recommendations, I’d like to shout out “One Outs,” a psychological baseball anime. PS. Not sure where else to watch it, but I found a playlist here, as of 4/18/23, got to turn on Closed Captions https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLvzeB_muIsJkoLYLmkHfg6R7IGcK88Llo
