Heather I’m sorry! Howls Moving Castle is the 4th or 5th Miyazaki film I ever saw and that one is my favorite 😅 but it is followed by Mononoke, which I think was the first I saw :). Also, from what I’ve seen from last year and this year, they’re doing Studio Ghibli Fest theater release every year, playing the big ones with a few changes each year. It looks like they keep the same movie order, HMC was end of September last year too.

Dabinsk

Haruhi directing her friends in the movie is the same as how my 2 year old bosses everyone around the house. Does this mean my toddler might be god?

Keirik

something I implore you all to check out are the character songs, which are like fun jams sung in-character by the voice actors. Each one has their own genre, for example Haruhi has pop rock, Yuki has dance pop, Itsuki has disco and funk, and Kyon just screams for 4 minutes. if you listen to only one, make it Homo Sapiens Rhapsody. Trust me on this.

I must’ve been more drained by Endless Eight than I thought, because my initial impression of the first of these episodes was “really? We’re devoting 5 episodes to the movie we saw at the beginning of the series, which was perfectly hilarious and weird on its own?” I also noted that this run is based on the second book in the series, which appears to be the lowest-rated on Goodreads, and I thought it might’ve meant it was less funny or inventive. However, episode 2 brought more humor, and episode 3 some weirdness (Yuki biting Mikuru to stop her from shooting lasers out of her eyes). So I’m back on board in time for the ending and movie!

Sigh makes sense as poor production planning. Keep in mind that Melancholy (the season 1 arc) is book 1, Sigh is book 2, Disappearance (the movie) is book 3, and the one-offs and endless eight are short stories from books 4 & 5. When they made Season 1, they probably weren't expecting a Season 2. So they kinda spoiled the premise of Sigh with a really good one-episode version. If the movie was being planned at the same time as season 2 then they didn't really have a lot of content left to cover. Thus the expanded Endless Eight and the slow Sigh.

MK

They could have just called this arc The Misery of Mikuru Asahina, although at this point it's become the subplot of the whole show.

Leelu Baloo

100% agree with Heather that the 1st Studio Ghibli film you see is your favorite. Mine = My Neighbor Totoro.

The Mountain That Abides

To give some further context about Nick's question regarding model firearms, Japan does have a robust airsoft manufacturing sector. The company Tokyo Marui is a huge name in the business and I believe pioneered battery-powered airsoft guns. They have a $600 replica of Albert Wesker's Samurai Edge from RE1 that I recommend checking out. Sometimes I think the only reason I have a job is to eventually give in and buy that.

The Makanai has, for me, the same warmth of setting and kindness of characters that Midnight Diner does. And it's a lot more interesting and subtle than the very bad Memoirs of a Geisha from the early 2000s.

Grant Prusi

I don’t necessarily mind seeing the making of the film, but seeing Mikuru sobbing on the diner table while seemingly being ignored by everyone else drained from me any fun I was having with these episodes. Season 1 walked a fine line with her torment, letting it be funny and horrible at the same time. This was just horrible, and makes the season 1 torment less funny in hindsight.

To add onto the Superman recommendation, the robots in episode 1 look like Eva units.

I’m so stoked to hear Nick is watching Zom100. I watched the first 45 minutes of the live action movie (at that point it started to pass the anime) and on that alone I can tell it might be one of the better live action adaptions from an anime/manga I’ve ever seen. The movie does a great job of being faithful to the source material while also not coming across as cheesy like some live action adaptations and it without a doubt contains the coolest looking zombie transformation sequences I can think of. Would LOVE if you guys covered this after the current show. 👀!

I watched the first 4 episodes of season one and dropped off because I didn’t like how they treated Mikuru then. It’s interesting to hear how the tone has shifted from “tormented but still funny” to “tormented and not funny” when I’m not sure I would see all that much difference. From the outside it sounds like the show now actually is somewhat satirical about the costume stuff when I didn’t see any of that in the first few eps.

When I first started watching this show I was so impressed and confused about why I had never heard of it. Now I've seen most of season 2 I understand why. It just isn't fun to watch anymore, Haruhi comes across as a bully, and I just don't care about or like any of the characters. This must have been so disappointing to watch on release. Season 1 was so interesting and exciting to watch, season 2 has just made me feel an almost nostalgic level of boredom.

This show is the first "serialized" version of a complete thought/idea/plan that executed all their ideas thoroughly. The experimition of concept was concieved and implemented before the audience got their say in the discourse of storytelling. Not to shit on GOT or The Mandalorion, oooooor Lost, but the audience didn't have an influence and the creators had a plan. And yeah It doesn't always satisfy or make you feel good but I would challenge that with the experience we've had with the last of us part 2. Made tons of people feel bad but was an incredible execution. Taking Haruhi as a whole after the fact, I have to say it was successful in it's implementation on the whole. Especially in "Broadcast Order". Without that as the intentional route I would have missed out on many of the emotional beats positive, negative and most relatable... meloncholy.Thank you Heather, Matt and Nick for this experience.

The production of "The Adventures of Mikuru Asahina" really doesn't seem like a very safe work environment. Someone needs to teach Haruhi about OSHA.

Zeon Liberation

Recently, like in the past few months, a manga called Shuna’s Journey was released in the US. It’s by Miyazaki. It is a precursor to Mononoke. Basically tells a story of a prince going west to help his village ala Askitaka.

These episodes are really interesting in the context of the Season 1 notion that Haruhi is kind of designing and running the show. When she steps into the role of director that aspect is amplified. At multiple points she responds directly to Kyon's voiceover narration, like when he sees Mikuru and wonders why she's in a waitress outfit; he says two lines in sequence and we can see his mouth isn't moving and she responds to him by saying "well it's because she's a waitress in the movie." Plus when he's talking about her being cute in the VO she says "What?" and later, when he mentions that Mikuru is very attractive in the future Haruhi gets mad and talks about how Mikuru is really going to suffer. Later when Haruhi is losing it and yelling at Mikuru the shot composition gets worse, she's only partially in frame because she's losing control. Right after that when Kyon grabs her the moment is shot in soft focus almost romantically, it's one of the few times he chooses to touch her even though he's pulling her off of Mikuru. Haruhi also gets mad when Mikuru offers Kyon her "half-drunk" drink, as that's an indirect kiss. Even though it's backstage of an episode we already saw I still feel like there's a lot of shades and layers going on.

In episode 22 of Haruhi Suzamiya, I was really thrown off when Yuki shows the contact lens that she took from Mikuru's eye and it's a totally normal-sized contact lens. Was really expecting it to be enormous - big enough to cover an anime iris, anyway.

David Mucci

The dead silence after I crowed about the ending joke of Endless Eight LMAO I guess I’m more of a simp for this show than I thought 😂

Sexy Grandma's Retirement Home

I'm curious to hear what Heather thinks of Vinland Saga when she hits season 2, cuz that's like going straight from Bloodborne into Harvest Moon. Still great, but man what a tone shift!

Krakoa

Like Nick, while watching Haruhi I've been constantly reminded of the Twilight Zone episode about the evil little god boy (and the Simpsons Treehouse of Horror where Bart turns Homer into a Jack-in-the-Box, same difference). I think an important distinction between that story and Haruhi is 1) the boy is truly a child who can't be expected to fully appreciate morality, not a young woman and 2) the boy knows what he can do, and has been conditioned by the way adults treat him, so he can't even develop a sense of right and wrong. Haruhi is a fun show, but the character of Haruhi only makes sense as a personification of the worst excesses of anime, or a young woman with a clinical personality disorder. In these episodes and especially in #23 Haruhi behaves so atrociously, but I can't really get mad at her because she just seems unwell. The show wants me to believe that she can grow as a character by having fun with her friends and being occasionally scolded, but I'd only believe that if she was doing a ton of therapy in between. I can buy time travel and alien robot witches, but this is the thing that takes me out of the show more than anything.

As gross as Heathers story was about the kid blowing his nose in another kids hand, it’s not the first time I’ve heard something similar. When my wife was a kid she did the same thing to her cousin. While I agree with Matt that little boys are gross I think more generally, kids can be really gross.

Anor Mal Scarecrow

After hearing Heather talk about the calm live action show she was watching, I was instantly reminded of the 2017 live action Netflix co-production “Kantaro: The Sweet Tooth Salary Man,” the story of a publication house worker who rushes through his job so he can hit up desert shoppes around Tokyo. All of the restaurants are Real Places and you get to vicariously experience the passion that they put into their dishes. But the key to the show’s charm is that it stars Kabuki actors in contemporary (non-Kabuki) roles, bringing their Kabuki “Big Movement Energy” to everything. Bro doesn’t just eat ice cream, he eats the ass out of that ice cream hard enough to make you either aroused or uncomfortable. It's like a live action anime. (https://youtu.be/Hw-6GP5cNl4?si=PQ-yPmUlREWBvtfA) Never got a second season, which is a real shame. (Based on a Manga, but I've never seen it in english.)

Matt is a hero for leaving all that in! 🫡
