Apple (and Patreon) are at it again (Patreon)

tl;dr: they're forcing subscription billing on everyone by the end of the year. For everyone reading this now, nothing will change for you. For everyone reading this after November 1st, 2026 (because I'm going to hold out as long as possible) it means you get charged the day you sign up. For Apple and Patreon, that means they collect more fees.

Apple is being dicks about this and Patreon is going along with it, though they are at least publicly unhappy about it, I guess. I hope this changes by the time November 1st hits. Nobody wants this and Patreon has a lot of power in this situation, either by setting up an alternate payment site (the way gacha/mobile games handle in-game app purchases post-Forntite lawsuit) or by being a bit bolder and boycotting the iOS store. I do not think they will do either, since Patreon historically has been allergic to doing the right thing.

I'm mostly writing this to implore every Patron here, and on the site at large, to NOT use the Patreon app on iOS and NOT subscribe to people through the app if you do. Use the website!! Open the website on your browser. It will work there just fine. More importantly, subscribing through the app costs you more in fees, the platform takes a bigger cut out of what Creators get, and Apple withholds those payments for 30 calendar days for reasons unknown to anyone.
