Neon Genesis Evangelion 1x19: "A Man's Battle" // Full-Length Reaction

And here it is, Evangelion's greatest episode to me. Absolutely EVERYTHING IS CRAZY. No anime ever gave me 20 minutes that felt like 20 seconds more. - The Eva-01 is "shot" like an animal documentary. Half the screen is black forest, framing the "animalistic" Eva eating the Angel. The biologic aspect of it (Arm, teeth, eye) is pushed to the extreme and the way the Eva look around itself while eating, like a predator looking if some other animal comes for its prey - The fact that Shinji came back so quickly for only ONE reason : Misato's trust. She did not change his passcodes, she trusted him. - The feeling of DESPAIR these last three episodes inspire are, to me, equaled only by the Berserk manga. Everything was "going right" and in three episodes it feels like a card castle collapsing. Less than 2 hours of episodes ago, Shin Rei and Asuka were the Golden Trio, defeating Angel after Angel, but now.... they are BROKEN, DEFEATED. Nothing is going right anymore. It's so fragile. And Eva-01 my GOAT. The best "robot" ever. That thing is scary. This was not a cool "berserk phase" moment like in Shinji's first fight. This is SCARY as shit. Its an horror movie.

This is not the first time that Shinji decides to run away; still I think that's the episode that started all those 'Shinji, get into the robot!' memes. Here, Shinji has to balance two aspects of reality: the only way he can make a difference (and protect those he cares about) is to pilot the EVA, and he is also badly hurt and traumatized by what his father did. If Shinji runs away, he will hit at his father, but he will become as meaningless in this fight as any civilian. So he fights. And again in battle, Shinji screams... Note the title of the second half of the episode: Introjection. In Freudian psychoanalysis, that's the process whereby a person internalizes qualities, beliefs, values from another person, say a parent, an authority figure, or someone admired. That's what Shinji does -- again with Kaji. He finds his 'will to fight' in the idea of protecting people with the only thing he knows that makes a difference -- how to pilot an EVA. But... does this imply losing a part of his heart? Becoming more distanced from himself? Losing contact with himself? And note also Asuka's desperation at not being good enough to defeat the new angel... in Shinji's absence. That can't be good...

'What's wrong with running away from reality if it sucks?'
