Quaffnot the Raven

I actually did not know this! Thanks for teaching me something cool! Now I gotta go learn more about the cultivation of orange carrots...

Juan E

Almost spat out my coffee 🤣🤣🤣

Taxus

I did! They were mostly mostly white and sweeter. Carrot pie was once a thing. Belgian White is close to an old type.

Jarl Seamus

Medieval period carrots were normally purple, white, or yellow and were far less sweet than modern ones. You can still find them as "Heirloom" or "Colored" varieties today.

Cormacc Brigde

When I do medieval cooking I use heirloom carrots all the time!

Just Jack

Modern orange carrots are from Dutch cultivars developed over the 16-17th century. Why this was done is a matter of continuing debate. Some claim it was motivated by nationalism, orange being a prominent national colour. Others claim it was a matter of taste, orange carrots were apparently sweeter than the other cultivars of the time. My guess is there might be a little bit of truth to both. There is evidence of orange carrots earlier (6th century?) in some artwork (Greek I believe), but that may have been an oddity of the time, or it could just be that a pigment has degraded so that it just looks orange-ish today?

Baronesa Gansita

Ah yes, sister Candida. She's in charge of yeast production for the brewery 🤭

Matthew D. Riddle

So, is Sister Candida the Matron of Horticulture, or Science-Sister?

Tettykins

I approve of the Frollo reference. Very cute pic, as well.
