These kinds of episodes are so weird to me. Like, I understand the emotional beats, and I feel for Rossi and love the backstory we get and empathize with his love for the sergeant. But I truly do not understand the american reverence for veterans. And I know what I'm going to say next will be an unpopular opinion. But I truly do not understand! Why do you guys revere veterans so much? Most of them were kids indoctrined to fight in wars that only exist to keep the wealthy wealthy! And then you say that you keep them in such high regards (for whatever reason) but a lot of them live on the streets and/or don't get the much needed help for their mental issues they developed fighting in nonsensical wars. I truly do not understand! Maybe it's my germanness not trusting anything military. Maybe it's my autism not finding any logic in that. Maybe it's a mixture of both. And don't get me wrong, I love this episode, and I feel for Rossi and the Sergeant, and I get emotional about their loss and their comraderie and it's beautiful. But I also think they are foolish and brainwashed into patriotic BS. So if someone can explain that to me, please help me. Because I really don't get it!

Being raised in a military family (Dad was 22 years enlisted and 20 Civil Service and my great-grandfather fought at Normandy), I can tell you that not everyone is in the military just because they are patriotic. My dad joined partly because it was the best way to get out of Pittsburgh and a life in the steel mills. It is also a solid job with less pay than most of them really deserve. The reason we revere Veterans so much is partly because our country is still relatively young (250 years old this year) and so we still remember all the people who fought to create this country. It is not ancient history the way it is in many countries that are centuries older. The other reason, in my opinion, is because many had no choice. With the draft during a couple wars, they were forced to serve. They did what they had to and the country recognizes that. And yes, the country doesn't help them the way it should. There are groups trying to change that. And I will say that many of the kids in the military right now went in because it helped pay for college. My niece is a medic on a helicopter. She went to Syracuse, which is about $70,000 a year. She only had to pay $10,000 a year. She owes the military 4 years of service for that. But, her National Guard unit in Vermont does things like rescue mountain climbers and respond to missing people in the wilds of Vermont. So, the military does much more than just fight. My father is part German (his grandparents were the first generation to come to the US). His grandparents revered the military veterans because of their help back when they were in Germany during WW1. In the end, I think it comes down to needing to separate the actual people in the military from the idiot politicians. The soldiers all went in for their own various reasons and they learn very valuable skills. It is not their fault that they end up in stupid and needless conflicts. That fault lies with the President and Congress. So, many Americans can revere the veterans without loving what they may have been required to do.

That are some good points to consider. Thank you!

How old are you? How much do you know about the Vietnam war? the veterans there weren't exactly happy about fighting it either. Doesn't change the PTSD.
