Joss and his 2 brothers (one of them is a composer) got bored during the writer's strike. They wanted to create something small and inexpensive, but still professional. To do it in a way to get around the issues being protested during the strike.... Nathan and Felicia had both been on shows created by Joss. And Joss always envisioned Neil for the title roll, so he called him and got an immediate "yes". This was released for free on YouTube, in 3 parts. It was named #15 In Time Magazine's Top 50 Inventions of 2008. It won People's Choice Awards, Hugo Award (Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form) and a Creative Arts Emmy Award for Outstanding Special - Short Format.

NPH was the get of the group. He was on a fairly popular sitcom for few years by then. Nathan as Becky said worked with Joss already (it was few years after Firefly for Nathan) but it was still pre-Castle (and pre-Rookie of course :D) so he was niche favorite but not the name he is today yet. He was perfectly smarmy in this role. And yeah now anytime you see him, you will be reminded of what The Hammer is... Felicia is very much 'hey it's that girl' she tends to pop up as guest star, she was a doctor on Rookie in 2 eps (in S1 and S5), she was in S7 of Supernatural (the hacker IT girl near end of the season), she was in S3 of Magicians as Poppy. From the stuff you would have seen her in recently. I used to be obsessed with some songs on this way back when :)

Some of us have loved NPH since 1989, when Doogie Howser premiered 🙂

Wow... what a throwback. Haven't watched or heard this songs in ages and yet I seem to remember every single word.

Oh, this was a nice surprise! I have not watched this in like 15 years. Some of the songs still randomly pop up in my brain every once in a while though, they're so freaking good.

They released each part at separate times on YouTube, so you had to wait for each "Act." It was so much fun, and yet once again, Joss stabs his viewers in the heart, lol. Everything was funny, until they killed off Penny! Of course he kills off one of his characters. Damn it, Joss. Seriously though, it was really creative of them to put it together for fun during the writers' strike. And if you ever get a chance to hear it, the series also has a "Commentary" musical that plays in exact time with the 3 acts of the show. All the actors are involved, they sing extra songs (some of which are even catchier than the ones in the actual show, lol!), and it's super funny and entertaining.
