I was just looking wistfully out the window wishing for part 2

Cyberlight

"Hello gals, blokes, and all other folks. My name is Kara and this is Mortius" ... missed opportunity. LOL

Austin Tackett

So, as someone who was there, Angela's voice was definitely done the same way in the theater! Wasn't just added on post lol

Alaina Lomasney

The dramatic refocus of the camera before Justine asks "Do you love him" makes me laugh so hard every time.

Takeyia Twitty

Hey so we can get the thank yous back. Slight warning. You're gonna get angrier. Hope that helps.

JustAnAnxiousMess

I'm so excited about this one! CC is probably my fave and I am so glad Mortius is enjoying it!!!

Sophia Barsness

Excited for this first reaction was great

Jennee

25:30 Mortius did not consider the implications…

Alaina Lomasney

One thing I love about this villain song is just how much it juxtaposes This Day Will Last. Right down to the stepmother taking Ella's place in between the two girls. Both parties are having their best day but one trio has genuinely pure love and joy while the other's is self centered and tainted by cruelty.

Dave Ballinger

All vocal effects were live in this show, not done in post.

Michelle Stewart

I’d listen to the soundtrack version of Facade for that bit you’re missing :)

Jayden Callaghan

Glad you’re liking it so far! Can’t wait for you to listen to the first song in Act 2 it’s been one of my favourites since it came out!

Cyberlight

One of the reasons I love your content is the musical breakdowns and I have to agree on "I Look Good In This", but I think making it just a little bad was intentional, and we're mad because Lauren and Mariah JUST demonstrated they could've done better (if we didn't already know that). The characters, though, have been in these bodies for about 30 seconds at that point, so for them it makes perfect sense that they would just copy their mom. That was my subjective opinion, anyways.

Dave Ballinger

Also this is just a new interpretation of Cinderella, not a parody. Super glad you’re enjoy the show :)

The_Person_Without_A_Name

Lucy, Justine and Ella are all platonic soulmates and nobody can convince me othervise<33 i love them all so much and i care so much and i cryyy about them

Alaina Lomasney

The scene of Ella's meeting the fairy queen is my favorite in the entire show. "You would lie to a God?" Sends shivers down my spine.

intrepiddragons

Facade is actually my fav song of the show, I never even noticed until you mentioned it, but then again I got no clue about music. Interesting though 😂 Also I love watching people realize after the fact why Mariah and Lauren play the trolls and the girls. Can’t wait for act 2!

[Reacted]

The girls thought they were safe because trolls turn to stone in the daylight. But what they didn't know is that the skin suit spell let's the evil stepmother carry out her evil plans during the day, just as efficiently as she would during the night. The game was rigged against them from the start, poor girls.

Dani Hatch

My opinion for Facade is that it's being sung by trolls pretending to be human and that's why the vocals are "off" because even though they look human they aren't.

Dave Ballinger

Facade is a dark reflection of Last Forever. If you notice all the movements are referencing the dance in the former song. Cinderella = The Evil Stepmother and the sisters are Justine and Lucinda

Mafidon

I loved the stop-start at the beginning “Hello g- da babyyyy~” So valid of you, that’s me every time I see my cats

Leilani Tuala

"I have normal feelings about this fictional show." My favorite reused quote from mortius

Shan

I knew you would love Sir Hops A Lot and Crumb; as well as Justine and Lucy. I didn’t even realize the Lancelot thing until you mentioned it lol. Can’t wait for you to react to Act 2, and I’m definitely waiting for one scene I hope you end the recording at. Thanks for the wonderful reaction!

Etsie_99

I cant wait for you to see her dress!! Yes, this musical is phenomenally written and I dont fully understand some of it (since English isnt my first language and all that) i still get how many banger lines there are in the text and songs. I need like at least 5 more musicals like this. The part where Jeff sang in Ash to Ash was part of the promotion video for the cast recording so it was strange for me that he only sang the end of it at first (not a complaint, just something I wasnt expecting that). Im so happy to watch Team Starkid evolve with every project they make, because NPMD was amazing but Cinderella's Castle is even better (production wise). Its so magical, and yes I also thoght about the Black in this scene lol

Jacob Morton_

To me I don't have an issue with Facade's vocals I see it as kinda an anthem so the unison works great. Definitely can see your point though. Also putting this here you are genuinely one of my favourite creators right now!!

Etsie_99

Im aware, but still. I think it was just his part at the end at the promotion if I remember correctly (which I usually dont)

kayla ling

I got chills on the word "magic" when I first watched the show. Ash to Ash is one of the best songs I've ever seen staged. It felt like magic

Somedude Watchintv

Since no else seems to have this suspicion and I was wrong anyway. This probably isn't a spoiler but I'll warn you anyway. **INCORRECT SPECULATION SPOILER** when I first saw this show I was super suspicious of the fae. I was convinced that Ella was going to be possessed or something by the end to fulfill the line "as radiant and terrible as I.

Bug Christensen

Oh I just KNEW you'd love the "I am fae. I am god. I am mother," line having heard you talk about your Pathfinder world in the Vox Machina reactions it felt right up your alley and I'm so glad. She's not the Fairy Godmother she's Fae, God, and Mother. AGH so good!!!!

Bethany S

Okay, so, my e-mail hates me or something and didn't tell me about you doing this show for the first video, but I guess that worked out cuz I got to binge the entire first Act in one sitting. I SHRIEKED when I saw you were covering it though! And yes, the fae god mother is my favorite character just because she kills that role and that song. Jeff Blim is amazing as the Narrator. The Bowie influence kills me. The very first song of ACt 1 I went "Why is he so... OH MY GOD ARE THEY DOING A LABYRINTH HOMAGE?!?" And then after I finished I went back and watched all the stuff and it was liek ah, yes, 80s fantasy...

honkceasar

God I always forget how much I adore this act 1 finale omg. Perhaps a strange compliment to give, but I think CC is starkids best CASTED show to date. I just think everyone is playing EXACTLY who they should be, with songs that fit them, just absolutely showing off each unique actors best strengths. It makes everything land so much harder to me!!

Logical Dreamer

Oh i get this show making you want to write. This cast album is on my writing playlist. Also Bryce literally looks like one of my characters in my story so I've mentally cast her in case it ever becomes the animated musical i dream it would be lol Such a fun batch! I cant wait for you to react to the next part

Makayla H

That whole final song felt like a lead up to a quick change especially with the fae folk surrounding Ella completely at one point but alas. Still an incredible song! Also props to Kim for holding her arms up in the air for that long, like that actually insane.

bee

You should listen to the cast recording version of Facade!

ad astra

It is such a MASSIVE credit to the writers, Jeff Blim's musical writing, and Mariah and Lauren's INCREDIBLE acting, as well as Bryce's excellent chemistry with the two of them, that we managed to get SO DAMN ATTACHED to Justine and Lucy in SUCH a short, short time. And yet they make us aware pretty much at the very moment the sisters appear that they're going to die because we know how double casting tends to work with Starkid. And also because then their song with Ella is such a "BAD STUFF IS GONNA HAPPEN SO ENJOY THINGS NOW." Like it's such strong 'they're about to die' vibes like Ruth's scene in Nerdy Prudes. And then how perfectly timed her escape with the sisters would've been and how they believed her and everything. Regardless of how much foreshadowing, because of that incredible acting and writing and music, what happens to the girls absolutely DEVASTATES. Not just because of how it happens, how sudden it is, who does it, and how it hurts Ella BUT because of the horror of reusing their skins. So messed up but such incredible writing. Also I love the dramatic zoom as Justine asks "do you love him?"

ad astra

BAHAHA I loved the SCREECH and the grumpy, angry goodbye at the end of the vid where the girls die. And the intro to the next episode omg. You poor thing. Also, don't forget to be angry at the Lang bros. as well as Jeff Blim 😉 Mariah's voice acting is fabulous, but also I LOVEEEE that we got to see her play a completely different kind of character from what we've seen before. This character is ABSURD but in the most wonderful way, cracking jokes and being awful and spatting with her sister. We love to see Starkids stepping out of their comfort zones and showing their range.

The Dormouse

The instant shift in expression once the lancelot pun processed killed me lol

Rose Petal

I'm so glad you got to meet my favourite characters, Sir Hop-a-lot and Crumb. I love this musical so much I even got a tattoo of Hop-a-lot. Your reactions amplify my appreciation since I never noticed the changes in the harmonies you mentioned. Thank you so much, and I hope you keep enjoying it through this very dark fantasy. It's def very "The Labyrinth", "The Neverending Story", and Dropouts "Never After".

Allison Watts

"Why was Lady Ashmore dancing?" Eh, fairytale. This retelling is so much closer to a traditional fairytale than most other modern ones. It's Ella's story so a lot of the backstory stuff is just the way it is. Originally Cinderella's mom just died and her dad remarried because. In this, all we really get is that Lady Ashmore was a witch. Did she deserve to be burned at the stake? Probably not, but definitely a witch who happened to know the true religion of the world for reasons They might expand on it in future "castle" shows (they have said that they want to do more). I'm not sure if in the universe of Bog's Hollow (canonical audience that Jeff is addressing) the god is supposed to be the true religion or if that's just for this story they're telling. You could definitely headcannon that Bog's Hollow has one religion that was founded by the mother of the the real life "Ella" and the show is actually propaganda for why that is actually the proper religion. Since this is an in universe play, you can play around with the possibility of the in universe writers having alternative motives. Like how the book for House of the Dragon is a textbook in universe, so the show can play around with the idea that Alicent isn't actually a wicked step mother and the book was written by people who were living under the rule of Rhaenyra's descendants Wow, I went on such the tangent. Oopsy

Alyssa P

I never quite loved My Facade as much as others do. I wonder if you just pinpointed why. This is why I love hearing other people's opinions, not just to potentially change mine but to enhance them.

Sarah Neely

Isn't this cool? I'm so excited for you to get to Act 2. You breaking down why you did or didn't like certain things is really helping settle my mind about some things. I felt My Facade was missing something too. And while the Craft Thee Starlight song isn't my usual jam.... it's Just Freaking Cool. And glad to know I'm not the only one who didn't see the skin-suits coming. I was like 'huh that's weird it's the same actresses. I guess you have to double up!' .... until it was too late. The rage was so real.

Lindsey

Ash to Ash gives me full-body chills every time. Everything about it is just hauntingly perfect.

Llexica

Can someone answer this please? What exactly are the three gifts? The structure of the scene/song makes it difficult to tell what the official list is! She says "first, a knight." Ok so he's the first gift. She doesn't introduce crumb as the second gift. In fact he is introduced as being given to hop a lot but ye is never said to be the second gift to Ella. She sings about ellas mom for a bit and the next thing we hear about gifts is "from it (that last light in the nothingness) i shall craft your final gift [singular], trappings [plural] of starlight!" ok so crumb WAS the second gift then? but then immediately says "i forge you these THREE gifts" clearly referring to the three trappings because she didn't "forge" the animals. So they AREN'T considered amongst the gifts now? No because she said final gift after giving only animals so they HAVE to be gifts!! Does she consider the three starlight-forged gifts collectively a singular gift? Because she says "and for your final gift [singular and she already said final earlier! ugh!] I grant thee starlight [singular]!" Is that yet ANOTHER gift or just treating the three forged trappings as a single gift even though she already referred to them as THREE gifts. So are there even just 3 gifts or is it actually 5, or 6 even?!?! I am beyond confused by the quantitative language used in this whole sequence! HELP! My ultimate conclusion is that she gets a total of 5 gifts and Jeff just mucked up the continuity of the dialogue/lyrics to reflect that. What's your take, guys?

Chris

honestly, I think Cinderella's castle is less a Disney parody(where a lot of its humor is based off of critiquing the Disney version), and more a genuine attempt at a retelling. CC moreso uses the commonalities of the various versions of the fairytale in order to inform it's plot beats while still adding their own special world building. another Cinderella musical that is an attempt at a retelling (but fails) is ALW's Bad Cinderella as the reimagined parts weren't cohesive and ultimately reinfotced the message that they were trying to critique

Bethany S

So what I THINK is the easiest take is to assume Hop-A-Lot and Crumb are one gift, Trappings of Starlight (The dress/shoes) is another, and the third is the actual glamour attached (The actual 'starlight'..the magic). Which I'm going to avoid spoilers here, but there's a scene at the very end where "Trappings of Starlight" comes back in a DIFFERENT form. So I think it's more that the song isn't wanting to directly give away the ACTUAL nature of the starlight/trappings so it stays vague on the three gifts. It lets the watcher think it's the typical dress, shoes, servants story. But I think that's why the fae's song strays into "the dying ember of the flame of life" and "Where all things return and all things will start". The starlight is a gift by itself, it just is also a gift that she makes physical clothes from it. I don't know if that makes sense outside my head though.

Dave Ballinger

I actually love that Facade is mostly sang in a block melody. It allows Mariah to riff over the top of it, and Lauren actually sings a subtle harmony throughout. It’s rocky and powerful and in your face

Dave Ballinger

Same! I think it’s their best written show to date

Aubrey

If/when you go back to rewatch Last Forever and Facade, notice how the choreography kind of rhymes!

Robin

I assume Hop a Lot, Crumb, and the Trappings of Starlight (as described at the top of act 2)

Maren Lauble

I'm thinking it's deliberate. The choreography already mirrors the one of "Last forever". Those are three highborn human girls who sing a song about joy - of course their harmonies are perfect. In "Facade" we have three brutish, uncultured trolls. They have no idea about harmonies, they just belt the lyrics out. That's my hypothesis, anyway.

Robin

She doesn't give a number, despite Mortius's assumption, until she says "your third and final gift". What she says is "I give unto thee these gifts. Use them well. Deliver our fire to those who have forgotten us. First, a knight...." Nothing about how many there are. Then Hop a Lot introduces Crumb, the second, and then she says "your third and final gift"

Lynn Ashmore

I will fully admit, when this show came out I did not enjoy it, but looking back, I think it's just because my last name is Ashmore and it felt weird. I'm enjoying going back through it with your lens and seeing it with you eyes and being able to name why some things worked and some didn't more then just "it feels like they're talking directly to me"

Robin

As someone named Robin, sitting through the song with my name in the title from Holy Musical B@man (no spoilers!) was so painful, disliking this show because of the shared name is so entirely reasonable and valid to me

Ester RB

Yeah, I agree. I actually find more similarities with the original tale than with the Disney version.

Bethany S

I have to share my insane theory that I CANNOT PROVE and this has no spoilers for anything not in act one but it's that the Narrator is going to be something LIKE Puss In Boots (the actual original story, not.. Shrek...) or something. Because if you watch how he lounges, moves, and the positions he crouches PARTICULARLY in "Cursed Crazy"... Like.. the CAT VIBES. CAT VIBES ALL THE WAY DOWN. He even like does the cat tilting of his head as he observes, the cat skittishness behind Ella when he's hiding from the Stepmother when she goes troll the first time, the leaping onto platforms. Also, I know all the male characters pretty much wear impressive boots but... it feels really distinct to his outfit. His grin is even 'chesire' like at times. I once had a director in a play suggest we think of animals or animal merges for our characters to have as a 'vibe' for our movements, and since mine was a widow who...very clearly killed her previous husbands, I went sorta spider/cat mix and when I watch Jeff in this role, all I can see is someone embodying a cat vibe. I cannot. It's ALL I SEE. And considering the setting, then my brain scrambles for cat characters who might be telling the tale. And Puss In Boots in the original story was a talking cat that used trickery and showmanship to get what he wanted. Which. AGAIN. NARRATOR. (Sorry, this is MY "I'm not off my bullshit" thing)

Ester RB

But she gives a number in "I forge you these three gifts". And I think the three gifts may be 1) Hop-a-lot and Crumb, 2) the shoes and dress, 3) the magic/starlight (not explaining further to avoid spoilers). Or maybe even I could consider that the clothes and the magic are one and another one of them is the opportunity, but with the lyrics of 'Ash to ash' I think the first option makes more sense

Dave Ballinger

Also on reflection there are more harmonies buried in the mix for the Proshot. If you hear the soundtrack version there are definitely some lovely harmonies in the backing vocals.

d'Altagnan

One of my absolute favorite things in this show is Jon and Joey wearing makeup to match Sir Hop-A-Lot and Crumb. Just adds so much to the portrayal!

AJ

I would LOVE a YouTube short or reaction gif of "That's not how opinions work!" (If Mortius is ok with being clipped) Or maybe print-on-demand stickers in the merch shop?

D. Sparrow

Once again the correct reaction to Sir Hop-A-Lot

Murry Soothsayer

oh hell yeah. I've been waiting for this one

Angela

26:38 I really wish you weren't right, but as soon as this scene started I started audibly apoligizing so...

D. Sparrow

Yeah embarrassingly I only got that during this reaction and it's one of my favorite lines 🤦‍♂️but doesn't make me like it any less

Elliott Randall

I know someone named Veronica and she loves a lot of parts of the Heathers musical, but understandably cringes when certain songs have her name (mostly Blue, but also the opening song)

Mx. Cherrybomb

The choreography of "I look good in this" mirrors the prior song. It's a deliberate show of the Stepmother "stepping in" and taking over Ella's place, pushing her aside, and making her 'less' as she has since she's come into the House Ashmore. Ella's friends, who she was so good with, are gone and the stepsisters and stepmother exist as the 'facade' that everyone else will see.

Dave Ballinger

Harmonies are more prominent and easier to hear

Dave Ballinger

I always thought the gifts were 1. A Knight (Hop-A-Lot) 2. A Servant/Squire (Crumb) and 3. Trappings of Starlight (the glamour for the ball and the power of light)

she'salilsapphicokay ~

Hey Mortius, have you read the content warning in the description box for CC? No spoilers but you might want to do that before Act 2. <3 (hope you feel better soon!)

E Greenleaf

My personal theory is that Facade is a little off and a little uncomfortable to differentiate and compare it to the one before it- it’s definitely a little different on the soundtrack, but it still feels like they’re doing very much a Character Effect Song rather than a Vocal Showcase Song. The fact that it’s a little flat may be intentional but I’m not Jeff Blim so who can say!

Justanerd 97

I find this version of Cinderella is less Disney-based, and leans more into the Perrault and Brothers' Grimm versions.

Phoebe Duncan

Wild Idea: After reacting to a show, Mortius casts his pets (and himself+mortimiss?) in the musical. Cue fanart!

Loupetron

I absolutely adore this telling of Cinderella. And Ash to Ash is my favourite Starkid song. It quickly rose through the ranks for how operatic and voluminous it feels. It's just a neat twist on the fairy godmother trope to turn her into a vengeful and powerful goddess. It really bring Cinderella into the modern era. A lot better than a few adaptations of late.

Dave Ballinger

Can’t wait for more of this show ❤️

Prowitchhazel

It’s definitely as bloody as the grim version… and the prince is as stupid

Prowitchhazel

I like that they say the blood of the innocent rather than virgin blood because innocence isn’t necessarily aligned with virginity; it could just mean innocent of crime or whatever trespasses that the fae would deem major.

Prowitchhazel

Came back to say that I love that my 2 favorite songs from this show are the end of Act 1 and beginning of Act 2

she'salilsapphicokay ~

Not to be that person, but Mariah is in her comfort zone in this show! This is 'her type' of character, she's said on lives about CC that she's happy she finally gets to be more herself on stage. Her other characters, like Steph, are outside her comfort zone! :-)

Dave Ballinger

I would also love to see your reaction to Starry the musical sometime! Jeff Blim and Dylan have roles as well as a lot of other Starkids. They did a soundtrack and concert performance, the songs are so good!

Haley Barnett

Not sure if anyone has pointed this out yet, but in the last song, the coreo is doing something. We have James, Joey, John, and Angela in the inner circle, the one closest to Ella. The 2 actors who play some of the most important roles in the story (Prince, Hops a lot, Crum, and Step Mother) and who are Important to Ella.

ad astra

I didn't know that, but that makes it all the better, honestly. I'm very happy for her! Regardless, she NAILS it in this show. The comedic timing, the delivery, the physical comedy, etc. is really *chef's kiss*. And I hope we get to see her in more roles like this!

Russell

I also think that song is missing something

DrunkBS

This was a great show, but I think if every character was played by Jon Lovitz it would a masterpiece.

Kaiden Krepela

I just wanted to point out something about the staging and lights from someone who got to see this show live(One of the coolest things ever), but during Ash to Ash, the ensemble all have sparkling silver gloves and it isn’t as cool in the pro shot, but the live production was much darker lighting and the silver stood out so much more, it was so cool, like balls of silver magic floating around Ella

Blaggle

I believe that Lady Ashmore was trying to summon this being so that she could bring life back to her child. They never say that, but that's how I always interpreted it

Christina Joy

Ash to Ash is one of my top sk songs! I was lucky enough to see it live and I wish more than anything that every single person could experience it song live. Kim's vocals and the echo on her voice really grabbed your attention and locked you in. You could also literally feel the ground shake when she first came out! I've never had an experience like seeing that song live before full body chills the entire time to another level! Truly magical
