Dear PatronsI hope this finds you and your families well.If you've been wondering why we've been quiet lately, we've been taking a short break in January to re-configure the Honest Government Ads set, improve the podcast rig, and generally recharge ahead of a new year of action. Our next Honest Government Ad will be coming soon. But in the meantime, I wanted to make a bonus podcast to help set the tone for the year ahead. As Aussies will know, this is shaping out to be an election year; and climate/energy policy will be central to it.At the same time, we are entering a decade that is critical in terms of climate action. So I thought it would be fitting to kick off 2021 by passing the mic to a climate scientist. And not just any climate scientist... I am honoured to welcome (back) to the Juice Media Podcast climatologist and distinguished professor, Michael E. Mann. His new book, The New Climate War, contains some great insights about the way this year/decade is going to shape out. Many of them are insights I've reflected on in some of our videos in 2019/20 - and I'm sure many of them are familiar to you, too. But the book brings them together into a single framework - so I was inspired to ask Mann if he'd come on the podcast to talk about it.I don't agree with everything Mann says; for example, I'm not as sanguine over Biden's climate policies. Like many others, I'll be watching carefully to see whether he lives up to his promises on climate action. But, overall, I think Mann offers many great insights; and I like the fact that he is "cautiously optimistic" about the future of climate action - lord knows we all need some optimism. Before I hit SEND, I'd like to to give a warm welcome all the new Patrons who have joined us since the start of the year - welcome aboard!I also want to acknowledge all our long-term Patrons who've stuck with us for the past year/s - thank you for believing in us.Lastly: what issue/topic would you most like to see us cover in 2021? (Let me know in the comments!)Well that's all for now, time to get back to work. We'll be back with our first Honest Government Ad of 2021 shortly.  Until then, take care - and I hope you enjoy this bonus podcast.Giordano & team

Great to hear you are regrouping and setting your sights high as always. This was strong choice to start an interesting year in a difficult decade but anything is possible and your ads and podcasts are a key part of spreading the word and explaining difficult things. People get ready!

Liatach

Corruption! Look forward to listening to this.

Iwan Boskamp

WA Elections and why Labor is striking a deal with the Shooters and Fishers instead of the Greens and the Liberals are promising to be co2 neutral but Labor calls them irresponsible. Oh, and both Libs and Labor still support Fracking the Kimberley!

Iwan Boskamp

Yes, corruption is a great subject! And there is more than enough raw material available!

Ewan McEwan

Thanks for the latest podcast - just reading Prof Mann’s new book now. Great to hear the discussions, and thanks for your use of humour bringing alive these otherwise tricky issues.

Greg Bugno

Thanks Giordano. Keep up the good work on Climate Change and extinction. May I suggest a topic for you to investigate. Have a look at what Felixer / Thylation are doing for helping extinction & Biodiversity in Australia.

ibjim

I'd like to see something on corruption too, maybe including one on board stacking, just to highlight one type. Keep up the great work.

The massive gap in accountability LNP and ALP. Bottle of wine vs sports rorts..etc Also Propaganda from murdoch (and others) in the way it harms the public's view of sensible policy.

Lakie

I would love to see an 'honest ads revisited' where you give updates on issues you've raised in the past and see where they are at now. I think understanding that context, of where we've had victories and where things are getting worse is really important.

Rosenthorns

I would like to see an honest government ad on the gradual diminishing support for those in poverty. Pensioners, Dole recipients etc.

thejuicemedia

Hard to avoid it unfortunately so safe to say we'll be covering corruption!

thejuicemedia

Thanks Iwan - this will also be relevant in our coverage of preferential voting!

thejuicemedia

Thanks James! Corruption is on the list for sure

White supremacists, porkbarreling, false news, political think tanks, aboriginal values, environmental values, packaging, ocean waste, reefs, methane. Oh dear, there are so many!

All the usual topics are on my agenda too, but as someone who's severely disabled it's NDIS which is front of mind at the moment. The government seems to want to change the entire legal basis of the NDIS so they can hold the reins more tightly and it looks like they're going to do it under the pretence that "NDIS recipients are using funds to pay for sex workers and this is ridiculous" and while everybody is screaming "OMG SEX" and losing their minds they'll just rewrite all the rules so they they can easily exclude anything they don't like from NDIS whenever they feel like it's getting too expensive. Very handy for them … Very terrifying if you're a disabled person who depends on this stuff to survive … … And don't even get me started on the "Independent Assessment" stuff because yes, I could definitely talk about it until I lose the ability to talk anymore … I have MANY opinions … https://teamdsc.com.au/resources/lets-not-talk-about-sex

Hey Giordano, For me THE topic of 2021 is climate danger and what humanity is doing about it. Thanks for kicking that theme off with Michael Mann! My suggestion is to do a series of podcasts with some of the key players, maybe... Prof Jeffrey Sachs, driving force behind the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals, the blueprint for realistic planetary solutions.  Listen to him let it rip back in 2018 https://youtu.be/up9dm4OY5vA Mark Carney, former Governor of the Bank of England, whose new gig is UN cat herder for Central Bankers before COP 26 in Glasgow. If you have the time listen to Mark's 2020 lecture series on the BBC entitled "How We Get What We Value" https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000py8t Ian Dunlop, respected Aussie businessman and long-before-it-was-fashionable advocate for declaring a climate emergency. I just found a vid of his vid from 2011! https://youtu.be/LvJ1vpSD-us I could bang on with other suggestions but you get my drift. In 2021, using Greta's "Our House is On Fire" metaphor, imo the public needs to hear from people who have already grabbed some huge fire-extinguishers and are busy putting out the fire. In other words, we all need more reasons to be "cautiously optimistic" as Michael Mann might say. Regarding the upcoming Federal election, can someone please tell me what it will take for the Greens to once again gain the balance of power in the Senate? That to me is our best shot at influencing the climate and energy policies of BusinessParty#1 and BusinessParty#2. As per usual, thanks for all you and the team do Giordano. Your talent and dedication have built this into a world class platform!

Mark D Larsen

Thank you for posting this interview, Giordano! Although I don't agree with every detail in Professor Mann's book, it conveys an essential analysis of the climate crisis —and the war about it— in the past, the present, and probably the future. It is truly essential reading for earthlings! As I tweeted to Professor Mann, I confess that there are times when feelings of "doom" overwhelm me, but not because of the fossil fools' petrolganda that he so aptly refutes in his book. It happens when I'm driving and realize that I'm surrounded by hundreds and even thousands of… tailpipes. Ugh! Thank goodess I then run across presentations like yours, and this recent one from "Fully Charge" —which helps resurrect my hope and resolve: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0P7fTPLSMeI

Australia is essentially two sovereign nations. First Nation’s Peoples’ Uluru Statement From The Heart shows the way to graciously reconcile and unite our shared land. Would you kindly lend the Juice Media voice to the 233 years in the waiting, redressing of the injustice, Giordano?

thejuicemedia

Hi Ricky, thanks for the message. I am sorry for all the shit you have to put up with :-/ NDIS is definitely on the list, in fact I've been meaning to make an HGA about this for a while and hopefully there will be an opportunity to do so. I've been trying to wrap my head around the topic (am actually speaking with two friends who have worked with NDIS). But if you have any info or articles which you'd like to share with me please hit me up (giordano@thejuicemedia.com).

thejuicemedia

Thanks for sharing your thoughts Mark, I know what you mean! Will check out Fully Charged thanks for the link G

thejuicemedia

Hi Sandra, thank you for the suggestion. This is of course the greatest structural injustice in this country... For what it's worth, I've been planning to make an HGA about settler-colonialism that helps to put this into perspective. Not sure when, but it's definitely on my wish list! Thank you for the suggestion.

Sandra Kirby

Many thanks Giordano and for your podcast with Michael who has a keen connection to the Australian climate situation and will further alert the world to the intransigence and lunacy of our government in a country already so intimately acquainted with climate catastrophe.

Mik Scheper

Big +1 on Murdoch, for Australia, the US, the UK, and anywhere else their distortions lurk.

Mik Scheper

I've been trying to wrap my head around the whole US tech v. Australian commercial media spat. I spent over a decade working in Silicon Valley myself, and have mixed feelings about Google, and generally bad feelings about Facebook. So, the arguments I read in the Murdoch press, about payment for content, make sense to me… but let's face it, it's the Murdoch press, and surely having just headlines posted in Facebook does them more good than harm. But I just don't know, and it's strange that I haven't seen much analysis in the Guardian, SBS or ABC. So I don't think I'm seeing the whole story on either side… is this mutual shitfuckery? Maybe this is something you could look at in a podcast? I think the degradation of media ownership laws is worth an HGA as well, and also how lax Australia's rules on paid 'news' articles and incidental adverts are. YouTuber Tom Scott just put out a video contrasting these rules in the UK and US, and Australia's seem really weak, compared with either. A lot of ABC Media Watch episodes look at this, too. Thanks for all the work!

Mik Scheper

Another topic you might want to explore: cryptocurrencies and the amount of electrical power their electronic 'mining' consumes, and all the scams and hype around blockchain tech. 'The attack of the 50 foot Blockchain' is a lively book on the topic (but perhaps a bit tech-heavy for lay readers), and I've just started reading the author's latest book (he's an Aussie, David Gerard), about how Facebook tried to create their own cryptocurrency, how it could've seriously damaged some country's economies, and what they're trying now instead. Maybe this is nerdier than what you think your audience wants to hear about, but I think 'big tech' is a mixed bag worth exploring. In some ways, the industry keeps the bastards honest, many companies truly value employee diversity, and there's genuine environmental concern at some levels. But there are serious concerns in others, and there was a conservative cultural shift in the 2010s, especially since the traditional hippies got gentrified out of San Francisco. (Or maybe I've just gotten cynical in my old age—yes, I'm old enough to remember the Australian Democrats' slogan. 😉) I honestly wish people would worry less about targeted ads and 'liberal bias' 🙄 and more about invasive 'real names' policies. 'Keeps our community safe' is utter bullshit, and these policies particularly problematic for abuse survivors and transgender people, and of course, they're really about cross-referencing personal information. I also wish people thought more about how monopolistic these companies have become; Google search results really haven't innovated much, when you think about it.

Mik Scheper

Sorry, one more: Australia's become such a car culture, and aeroplane centric, and the impact on our carbon footprint is real. Why don't we have high-speed rail, or even world-class standard rail, between Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne, with in-seat power points and reliable wifi, like trains elsewhere have had for decades? Those cities themselves have built plenty of freeways and tollways (or 'motorways', the marketing term in some states), and comparatively little rail. Sydney building another road tunnel across the Harbour while there's still no real public transport to the Northern Beaches is appalling, the Western Sydney Metro skips a lot of potential stops (the 'last mile problem', as US transport advocates would call it), and connections between modes are crap (Dulwich Hill, Lewisham, Camellia, Rozelle Bay… don't hold your breath about Pyrmont!). (The new trams in Canberra don't connect to the main railway station at all, which is crazy!) Predictability, the roads clog up in a matter of years, but they keep building and widening them anyhow. Cycling infrastructure is substandard as well. Traffic lights, priority rules, 'cyclists dismount', everything's set up to favour motorists in Australia; cycle lanes are an afterthought, if they're considered at all. The ridiculous and dangerous detours cyclists are currently forced to make around Rozelle Interchange construction in Sydney are shocking; in any European city, they would've built the new bicycle bridges first, not last, especially since it's one of the most important cycleways in the city. Oh, and they've put bollards across the cycleway along the Cooks River, another artery, which are impossible for cyclists with trailers to get around, and require everyone to stop and start up a hill… apparently somebody's dog got loose and got hit, and it's the cyclists' fault for riding on the cycleway at cruising speed. It's better in Canberra and Melbourne, but it's still 10 times easier and safer to ride in New York or San Francisco, a sad testimony to Australian transport planning. How can we expect Australians to drive and fly less, if the alternatives are so poor? And don't get me started on accessibility! [end rant] Again, thanks for all you do. I'm proud to sponsor you. My friends here in the US like you, too. (Funny how the snow in Texas has started a similar bullshit fight about renewable energy as the storms in South Australia did a few years ago! 🙄)

Adam

Rant or not, you're right. Love to have bike paths built around our cities and suburbs like in Scandinavian countries (or even a lot of European ones). E-cars as well. Shitfuckery of our current corrupt little band of conservatives in charge is destroying us and making us look stupid and provincial at the same time.

E

I think big tech should be a topics form an HGA - maybe it could also touch on big tech impact on electoral shitfuckery and shifting voter intentions...

E

* topic for a*

E

I really enjoyed the interview with Prof Micheal Mann Giodano, although I too am a bit of a cynic - I think my climate doom came in the 1980s, at least since then I've been an activist! Here's to shifting multiple Overton windows!

Diana

Thank you for remembering the indigenous people of our countries, Giordano. I am writing from the lands of the Dine people of New Mexico, USA. They have done so much to bring us to a proper understanding of the rights of nature and of life itself. Good work!
