[Preview] Australien Values | Honest Government Ad (Patreon)

Dear PatronsHere's the preview for our next Honest Government Ad! I usually like to focus on a specific issue or policy, so we can help people get their head around it. But then there's times when I just want to do an HGA that tries to sum up all the shitfuckery - and this definitely feels like one of those times. As always you're the first ones to hear it, so I value your feedback! I'm still tweaking the script to tighten it up, so if you have any thoughts, or suggestions for things I may have omitted, or a good idea for the Authorised By message at the end - let me know!A reminder that the preview is meant to be accompanied by the video, so some things will be clearer once the visuals are there. I do however want to share with you the link to the Dept of Home Affairs website so you know what I'm referring to as Australian ValuesI'll catch you soon when the video has been published. I like it. When I saw the topic I did get excited. I wished It touched a little more on how I feel as a migrant when I see this "Australian values" business. My feelings include thoughts such as "ok, I am welcomed here, but as long as I please you", "I need to assimilate, I need to volunteer and contribute to be accepted, yet Australian born people don't need to", "I need to speak your language and dressed the way you like, to not make you feel uncomfortable" , "I have to respect our freedom of speech, but I can't say anything or disagree with anyone because I will be told that if i don't like it I should go back to where I come from'. And a few other things.... These "Australian Values" are being used to insult migrant's intelligence and belittle us. It's disgraceful.

while I understand the use of profanities and the power of them when used prudently I feel that lately they are being overused, particularly the word 'cunt'.

I use the word liberally myself, I never use it in certain company as some people are offended by it. For this reason i cannot share the good message in your videos as i have had pushback about the language in some of your videos from family and friends. This has the effect of diluting your message and may put your credibility at a disadvantage when trying to win people over.

Great work in progress. Probably want to change it to 'stayed' on holidays in Hawaii rather than 'went' as he was already there when the fires started. Some men just want to be on holiday as the world burns.

Hi Natalia, thanks for this great message. As a fellow migrant, I hear you! I did consider venturing into this territory but I decided to use the "Values" frame more to criticise Govt policies than to actually address its treatment of migrants. Sorry to dissappoint you! I agree a video on this topic, focusing on the issues you mention, would also be good.

Thank you Sandra! You know, I think there's value in talking to the converted - we need to keep ourselves sane and engaged. That being said, I do think we reach people beyond our immediate political circle because of the comedy angle - although ofc that's just a hunch I don't have any metrics!

It's a bit of a Catch22 - some people don't share our videos bc of the language; others love and share our videos, not in spite of the swearing, but because of it! I could tone it down to make one group happy, but that would piss off another group! So in the end, I just go with whatever feels right. But thanks - noted!

Thanks for the feedback Audrey! :) Yeah my early drafts are always a bit angry and sweary, I then tend to pull it back here and there. Thi was a pre-filming preview so it had a bit more of the swearing that will end up in the final version!

Hi, Giordano. Absolutely brilliant! It nails everything I have been despairing about over the last few years. However, the very final reference to shitc**ts might be a bridge too far. I do believe those politicians you've called out are appalling human beings, but I've come around to the view that part of the problem with the treatment of women has to do with language as well as physical acts, and so the use of a slang term for vagina/vulva as an insult can reinforce the demeaning of women. I'm not a prude, so can you replace with something more gender neutral, like fuckturd, or shitgoblin? Just a thought... Thanks again for your wonderful work.
