Dear PatronsHere's the preview for our next Honest Government Ad.This one was requested by severeal of you via the Juice Advisory Board. So we made it.It's about the AUKUS alliance that our government has entered into with the UK and US. A good topic suggestion, as I think this could turn into a key issue at the coming federal election. It's also been a welcome distraction from writing about climate shitfuckery as we head towards the COP26 climate summit in November. Writing about the Chagos Islands and Guam has reminded how much I miss making "Visit" HGAs. The last one was in 2018! (Visit West Papua). I look forward to making more after the election.I hope you like this HGA. I know there's a wide range of opinions on this issue. I think that's partly because it's a genuinely messy situation. I've tried to capture a little of that complexity. LMK what you think.I'll catch you in a couple of days once the video is ready.(BTW: we're still making monthly videos, but as you may have noticed we're consistently running a couple of days behind the end of month deadline. Considering everything going on here atm with lockdowns, I've decided it's healthier to just roll with this for now. But fear not, we'll get back onto ye olde lunar calendar soon.)I hope this finds you and your loved ones in good health, in these crazy historic timesGiordano & team xo

Oh man, doesn't everyone already know that aligning with the US on any geopolitical issue only ends up in inflaming the situation and bringing about the thing you were hoping to avoid! Thank you HGA for nailing their throats to the honesty box once again!

John L Smith

Another great HGA. It really pisses me off that Scomo can just do this without even a by your leave! No parliament involvement, no public consultation and he just flushes $100billion down the drain - money that as you pointed out can be better spent on social issues. Boys with their toys!! Even if they’re only thought bubbles at the moment and won’t turn up before 2040. These fuckers in the LNP really make me mad!! Rant over.

Peter Todd

"Cool and Normal.... pal!" Oh I LOLed You nailed it on the reasoning - national security is this shitshow party's top rated 'strength' and they're banking on that being a winner for them in next year's election. I'm sure you've seen the survey.

Robin Humble

yeah, nah. I am no fan of scotty from marketting, but what do you mean china being arseholes "lately"? perhaps you are forgetting vietnam and korea? are you saying china "recently" crushing hk into the dust is just fine, and you're ok to sacrifice all of taiwan in the next maybe 2, or 5, max 10 years, and that's just fine too? as per trumpism, all democracy is at stake here, not just some idealised leftist western democracy (which is my favourite, but that's just me). democracy is under threat globaly, and to defend it we need allies, and positions of actual power (ie. effective deterrants like umm, actually better subs) and not just as you say faux "moral high grounds". so yeah, nah. bad video.

thejuicemedia

It seems strange to have to explain this, but the AUKUS announcement was in response to recent actions taken by the CCP — not Vietnam or Korea — that’s what “lately” refers to. And no, I’m not saying those things. Bad comment, I guess

Jarrod Mast

Sounds like another ripper! Thought you might have added something about this being just more shitfuckery for us to import from the USA, like we have with crazy freedom riots etc. I don't think USA and UK are shining examples of democracy we would want to ally with! Russia's almost looking like sweetheart at this stage! Lol.

Jarrod Mast

Totally agree! The gross misuse of public money is astounding, and you guys are spot on calling it a big middle finger to Australians!

Robin Humble

yar, sorry to disapprove. love the climate vids, and all for Greta++, but cutting down fellow (albeit often shit-for-brains) western democratic powers and alliances in favour of a weaker stance against the CCP is not smart geo-politics IMHO. you realise we're pretty much back into a new cold war plus a whole new cyber war, right? democracy is at stake here and that's what Russia and the CCP and other authoritarian states are targeting. actual spending on actual (better) defence hardware still means something, even in this tiker-gram and twitter-tube age.

Mark D Larsen

Spot on with your description of the USA. The way things are going, I really am starting to fear that Mad Max or Soylent Green is just around the corner on this planet.

Robin Humble

also, since when is buying some subs dis-aligning yourself with the pacific region? I really don't get that link... why can't we do both a higher tech defence spend and also engage more with pacific neighbours? they are not mutually exclusive. BTW let me just say Moruroa atoll tests and Rainbow Warrior antics - there are good reasons not to buy anything French and pacific. agreed that the USA is probably not morally much better, albeit less assassinated photographers, but it's not as it we have our own sub industry, so I suppose we have to choose...

Mike Richards

Looking forward to seeing the videos. As a Brit, I'm absolutely delighted to see that you pretty much ignored us for being the irrelevant fifth wheel on this particular clown car - no matter what Boris 'Britain Trump' Johnson likes to boast.

David Bishton

I think we have to admit that arms races, especially nuclear (a.k.a. "effective deterrents"), are effectively just inducements to up the ante. Only 2 groups have ever truly benefited - weapons manufacturers and those politicians who benefit from their largess. The US is embroiled in controversy over 350B per year for a wide spectrum of future societal benefits over 10 years while we cling desperately to 750B+ for military & armaments each year.

Bunga

As Michael West said the French were left out cos it would have been Faukus. Which is exactly what this is going to do. Further costings put it at closer to 200 billion. What about the nuclear waste? Where's that going to go? The Libs always say there's no money due to the deficit now theyre happy to blow $200 billion to try to get re elected. Future wars will be predominantly cyberwars. Why don't they invest some of that money in universities and education to attract that talent instead. We now have a big target on our back due to this announcement and ostracising ourselves in the process. This has got to be one of the worst decisions by the worst government in my lifetime. 200 billion for 8 subs which we don't get until 2040 and the last not until 2060. Fiction writers could not come up with that rubbish!

Ellejoy W

Thanks for continuing to provide some insight on the real workings of these announcements and photo ops. Looking forward to the video & the Podcast.

jonesmike53 .

Undoubtedly your best, juicemedia. And the most important All power to your hairy arms 😊

Ian Ossher

Brilliant HGA, I wish there was a way to make the comparisons - Adani’s $billion, poverty, mental health and housing - hang with deeper gravitas? Anyway Giordano and team well done again.

Isabel Robinson

soooo - you think Morrison tying us to spending billions on subs that will not appear for decades and will cost billions to run is a good move even though it's stirring up a shitshow now? The act is creating a Cold War situation - something I grew up with and coloured my formative years with an undercurrent of fear. I do not want that in the lives of my children and my grandchildren - let alone the potentiality of it heating up. And all that without even considering how the money would be better spent at home.

Isabel Robinson

Thank you - although the truth you speak made me cry.

Maria Maguire

Marvelous work. Its great to hear from the real opposition party. the Poll that Peter Todd referred to might be this one. https://essentialvision.com.au/party-trust-to-handle-issues-17. I am amazed at the figures since the Liberals have gotten Australia involved in more wars since 1950 than Labor. I still remember that Mick Kelty of the AFP came back from internation;al police conference saying that our involvement in Iraq had made us more vulnerable to terrrism and John Howad muzzled him instantly, and went on to embarrass him by drawing him into the attrack on Dr Haneef.

DB@Kambah

A little disappointed that you were so soft on Scotty from Marketing

Melanie Morrison

Absolutely love your work, the Juice Media. As a dual national (US-Aus) the alliance makes no fucking sense at all. Tell me, anyone, what has the US ever done for Australia (post WWII) except lead us in to disastrous wars and stuff us around with really bad trade deals. AUKUS is a ridiculously expensive joke!

frank pires

good add, you could have mentioned the HEU v LEU issue which is a pretty big one; going with the US sub model means we have to use HEU which is weapons grade uranium whereas had we brought in France we could have had the LEU option which would be a much better option. but agree that it was an opportunity to annoy Labor but a very expensive one and we pissed off the largest trading block on the planet so dumb on so many levels. FAUKUS would have been a much better opportunity to strengthen our indo-pacific posture against a bulging China. great work though, <3

Tyson Adams

Nice. Although, I expected a bit of a mention of the war drumming against China by the weapons manufacturers and Defence Dept via their front organisation the Aust Strategic Policy Institute.

ess

Love "Scotty from Announcements" "AwKUS" & "fUKyers" ... major LOLs at that last one in particular!! It doesn't require any edits however, when you get to discussing the expense of our new Subways (sorry, submarines) you could possibly add or substitute a contrasting ref. to "Because we can't POSSIBLY sign off on climate action, can we, despite nearly a decade in power to calculate the cost of that" ... Great job again, love ya shitfuckery Xx

ess

Cheers for that Peter. Always useful to other groups to see this sort of resource

ess

"Donnez moi un break, Mike. Je suis un rock star don't you know??"

Trevor

Love it....I'll happily spread it around once you publish it.

Raymond Martin

Would be a good idea if these shit heads actually sat down with China and talked to them about what they think is China. It cannot be North Korea, South Korea or Japan but it might be Taiwan. That might be why they are being bigger dick heads so they can take back their "rightful" territory. Taiwan has been an US industrial engine farming off production to cheap labour. A real US capitalist dream!

Ken Piaggio

Great! Sovereign Risk Ha Ha!

Ken Piaggio

FAUKUS would have been more appropriate alliance but with the same outcome that acronym suggests. Cannot imagine Aus came up with this plan as Scotty seems to suggest. Well above his pay grade and certainly locking us in to the US, so who would benefit most from that?

Ken Piaggio

Loved the comparison with ADANI!

thejuicemedia

Thanks Frank. I did have a line in there about HEU v LEU, but it didn't make the final cut (wanted to keep this one on the shorter side!)

Glen Kimberley

Brilliant and so on point again. Well done! Very well done!! 👏👏👏

Zam Msacone

Deep idk when do we stop going back in time? When Attila conquered the earth? Maybe stating from now 🤣🤣🤣 yes Guam Hawaii etc it’s true but China has built an underground airbase modelled on their aircraft carrier with all the money they saved with slave labourers don’t repeat please it’s like a thunderbirds are go movie

Zam Msacone

We should have cut off their iron and coal supplies

Adam

Hard not to sigh whenever you see any of those coal fondling morons do anything.

Sandra Kirby

Thank you Giordano and team- as always some fresh perspectives and creative twists👌 For me, countries possessing a modicum of sanity in our world on the brink of climate collapse and potential nuclear or biological wipe out, would be sitting down together in crisis talks designed to STOP the childish power plays and political and populist LUNACY and devise and execute PEACE and SURVIVAL ACTIONS. NOW.

thejuicemedia

I hear you Sandra. Alas it seems we still have to learn a few lessons before we are able to do that

John Ellies

Have to admit I'd never heard of Chagos atoll islands. That's why you guys are best. Funny, informative, insightful.

Damian C

Sorry, but based on my understanding of the deal, the parts about making us a target for a nuclear strike and concerns about non-proliferation is off base and well overblown. There is a huge difference between nuclear POWERED subs and subs that carry nuclear weapons, and the deal is absolutely only for the former. Nuclear powered subs are no different to any other nuclear reactor, it is simply a way to create steam to power the thing. I mean, you can put nuclear weapons on conventional subs if you want. We are not getting any nuclear weapons for those subs, and merely having those reactors (especially if they're built by the UK / US instead of us) puts us no closer to developing nuclear weapons, even if we wanted to; especially since we could already do that given any desire to. I won't argue about all the shitfuckery around the politics etc of the deal, but my understanding is that from a military effectiveness point of view, there are good reasons for us to have nuclear powered subs, since the biggest weakness in conventional subs is operating range, and given the scale of our waters, range is a huge issue for us.

thejuicemedia

Hi Damian, I think listening to the experts on this is the way to go. This is from the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists: https://thebulletin.org/2021/09/the-new-australia-uk-and-us-nuclear-submarine-announcement-a-terrible-decision-for-the-nonproliferation-regime/ I know the subs are nuclear powered, rather than armed. But there is a big difference between subs powered by HEU rather than LEU. As that article explains. As for being a target: this is from China itself, you know, the country that would launch such a strike: https://7news.com.au/politics/federal-politics/china-warns-australia-a-potential-target-for-nuclear-strike-due-to-new-aukus-pact-c-3990107

Damian C

Hi Giordano, appreciate the response. My expectation is that we will probably end up getting reactors provided/built from the UK (the US is already having trouble building as many nuclear subs as they want) installed as a unit in the subs, rather than us developing our own infrastructure to enrich our own uranium and build the reactors ourselves. Given these days the reactors tend to be fueled for the life of the sub, refueling will not be an issue, and if the deal includes the reactor being decommissioned by the UK/US at the end of life, the fuel cycle remains in the control of already existing nuclear powers. If we really wanted to develop nuclear weapons, we could do so already regardless of access to HEU via nuclear sub reactors, regardless of the treaty. Plus, how ever reputable the bulletin, they still have a core agenda that biases them on the issue and leads them to focus on the worst possible outcomes at best, and at worst, potentially sensationalise things to advance that agenda (however laudable it may be). The latter article isn't really credible if you ask me, merely a media outlet, even if state owned, citing unnamed "Chinese military experts". Hell, even if it was an official statement from the party itself, it reads more like a BS political excuse put out to put pressure on a treaty they don't like (because of the political aspects, rather than the the supposed idea that the UK/US will suddenly decide to put nuclear weapons on the subs just because they are nuclear powered). We see that crap from governments all the time, and China is no different. Besides, let's face it, in the event of an actual nuclear war between the US and China, we're absolutely already a target as a long-time US ally with US bases.
