Dear PatronsHere's our latest Honest Government Ad which you helped us to produce. I had a fair few requests from you to cover this, so I gave it a shot! It's a good topic request, one with potentially big consequences for the world - especially Australia. It's also a messy topic, as I realised when reading about it. Which is why I wasn't as quick off the mark with this one.At one point I thought it might be best to leave it alone. But then I remembered that messy topics are precisely where it's helpful to provide some perspective.I mean climate change used to be a REALLY messy topic. Today the conversation has been largely normalised, so it's so much easier to write about it. Wich I suppose is why so many people are doing it today - which is great. But back in 2009, when I started writing satire about climate change, for Rap News, and probably up until around 2015 - writing about climate change was an occupational hazard! There was so much toxicity around it. But even though it courted a lot of abuse, I am so glad I did it anyway.  Unlike climate change however, this issue isn't so clear-cut. There's a lot of bullshit flying around on all sides. And I didn't want to just say "China bad!" or "China's done nothing wrong", which seem to be the two opposite extremes of those views. So I tried to provide a synthesis of some sort. One thing I did want to take a very clear stance on, however, is that when addressing "China's" conduct, we're not talking about China or Chinese people, but about the CCP. Which is why the HGA makes that clear at the very start.Ok ok... that's enough rambling from me!I hope you enjoy the latest video, and I'll be back in a few days with the podcast companion for this HGA. We have an expert guest lined up, and it should be out by the end of the new week. If you have any specific questions, let me know - we might be able to address some of them in the podcast. As always, the PG version will be on our website at the usual place in the coming days. After which we'll get back to the climate crisis as we approach the crucial COP26 summit in Glasgow. (Perhaps a safer topic for discussion, but one with even greater potential for catastrophe and shitfuckery).Till then, take careGiordanoVideo Links:YouTube videoFacebook videoTwitter video: coming soon...

Brilliant! BTW it doesn't surprise me that the government of OZ doesn't fund mental health initiatives as that would imply the majority party would be subject to that improvement ... Also, when is the announcement of Statehood coming? 51st if I'm counting correctly ;-) Oh, and I suspect this might be a revamp of the 1970s and 1980s unspoken strategic plan: if you're going to get into playing tennis with nukes then pick some other territory to do it in - back then, the players were the CCCP and the US with the tennis court being western Europe. Now its, hmmm, CCP and AUKUS, making the tennis court, hmm ... Australia ... guess some things don't change? So sorry.

Excellent, as always Giordano. It's my opinion that Morrison isn't that bright - especially when it comes to diplomacy and negotiation. Personally I think that he's been royally played and shafted taking the nation with him. His short term goal of keeping jobs for himself and his mates has exposed him as a fool and allowed Biden to get the upper hand, not that Promo cares. But my biggest suspicion is about the underlying influence of industries, particularly the arms and military industries. This agreement is all about who can make the ching-ching. I would suggest that neither Boris, Biden or Showbag gave more than a cursory consideration to representing the peoples of their respective countries, it was all about the money.

thejuicemedia

Thanks Peter. Yeah, sadly, you're probably right - that's a very big part of it. Which if true is even more rage inducing :0

thejuicemedia

Thanks Robert - I fear we're already the 51st state, just without the title!

Rohan Kilby

Wonderful work yet again guys, nailed it beautifully.

Peter Todd

Indeed, looking forward to your podcast, I have really enjoyed all the previous discussions, it's great that you went with doing them :)

Cody Konior

I think I’m in the minority but I’d have liked this one to be more hard hitting. It felt a bit too gentle compared to recent videos. But that’s okay because the next one is always nearby 😇

Jayjay Swiny

Touches so many nerves brilliantly. Ouch!

James Webley

Good God, is there no ally you won't trample over? First France, now stealing the much coveted 51st State title from the UK!

Diana

AWWKUS indeed! But I think you’ve come up with a future topic, Giordano: Whatever happened to Diplomacy? Seems to have gone missing entirely, like those WMDs in Iraq.

Philip Rhoades

Another classic! - but a bit more balance is needed - how many US military bases are there in the world? How many Chinese? How many US bases encircle China? How many Chinese bases encircle the US?

Anthony Hortin

Another great vid, as always. 👏👏

Dave Sharpe

Agree with Philip. I would add that perhaps, and for the first time, I felt this was under researched - not that I disagree with any particular aspect to it but it did not accept / describe any of the threats we (residents of Australia) are now facing into as a country from China.

thejuicemedia

Thanks for the feedback Philip. Whilst I agree with your sentiment, I'm not sure I follow the logic. Every country is encircled by US bases. By that logic, in the quest for balance, we can never focus on the conduct of any country in the world. Perhaps this video feels like it doesn't mention US imperialism enough - which is fair enough and perhaps I should have put more emphasis on that. But please remember we've made plenty of videos about the USA's imperialism. And this is the first one to mention the CCP's conduct in any meaningful way. Dave, I think Philip is not saying what you think he's saying. I did not describe the threats you mention because in researching this I came across nothing to suggest that China/CCP poses a threat to Australian residents. The threat is to the commercial and geopolitical dominance of the US.

thejuicemedia

Interesting! Perhaps that's a result of the approach I described of trying to avoid the more extreme positions on this polarised issue.. I suppose the cost of that is it might feel a bit less hard hitting. But I think it might be worth it. As you say, we can save the heat for the next one ;)

Philip Rhoades

TJM, Yes, I still thought it was an excellent video, and I realise you have done plenty of stuff on Yankee Imperialism previously, I guess what I was clumsily getting at was that the criticisms of China that you did mention sounded a bit too much like Yankee / Oz propaganda - China has very good historical reasons to view everything the "West" does with great suspicion - it is clear that Yankee Forever Wars require enemies and Yankee corporations have their interests looked after by an overwhelmingly superior Yankee military . .

Nemo Halperin

I know, let's piss off the military superpower we live next to by aligning with the military superpower they detest! That won't accelerate the possibility of war at all will it?! Facepalm! Basic rule of thumb on military geopolitics... Do the opposite of what the USA wants you to do. You'll live longer.

Kai

Scotty from announcements. Man, where do you get these pithy lines from?! Its a really good take imo on the issue. There's downside to any geopolitical angle, and in the long term, maybe the decision to pull out from the sub was the right one for the wrong reasons. But for someone supposedly conversant with marketing and PR, Scotty made sure that the exit was as messy as it could have been. Thanks TJM.

Mark D Larsen

Watched this in YouTube yesterday, as it hadn't shown up in Patreon yet. Yet another exposure of international shitfuckery! As I commented in Twitter: remind me why Australia needs nuclear submarines anyway? Somehow I doubt it's to monitor and protect the Great Barrier Reef. Haven't the Ugly Americans got Oz surrounded with theirs, as it is? Gawd, what are we heading toward here? "On The Beach"?

David Baldwin

Welcome to the Empire! Speaking as an American, at some distance from these issues as experienced by Australians, it may be that the "too gentle" feeling is coming from the juxtaposition of nuanced geopolitical considerations like the CCP's activities in the South China Sea (The mutual "illegally occupying islands" accusations, for example, seem a bit removed from everyday experience, but maybe this is what gets debated over pints in OZ?) with HGA's trademark gut punches ("We have no idea how much it will fucking cost!"; "In a country that can't seem to afford…"). The significance of the former requires an article in The Economist to understand; the latter does not. In the end, I think the geopolitical rationalizations and their counterarguments are so much chaff for the hoi polloi. They mainly serve to camouflage the reality: "The biggest fuck you…is to every one of you." This is why I love the HGAs: they manage, with such genius wit, to drag the real issue out in the open and expose it to the ridicule, scorn, and outrage it deserves. Thank you again.

Andy

I am wondering why you always write Australien instead of Australian - is that the correct way to spell it?

Robert Bismuth

Ha ha James ... good one! Unfortunately, BoJo didn't move fast enough following Brexit to secure exclusive rights to the 51st State title ... but he's got a shot now at the 52nd ... ;-)

Inconcision

They're being clever. A couple of definitions for 'alien' are "Owing political allegiance to another country or government; foreign." or "Belonging to, characteristic of, or constituting another and very different place, society, or person; strange. synonym: foreign." The indigenous people who were the first humans here are not aliens, but the colonialists (originally of british origin, but later included waves of europeans and then asians) technically are. Plus they're not really using the "official logo" of the country, so they change it on purpose by making it "Australien". Coincidentally "Australien" is how the French actually spell it. Because of our governments actions, it can embarrassing to be 'Australian'. Calling ourselves "Australien" is a clever way to acknowledge past behaviour.

Andy

That makes a lot of sense. Thanks! 😁

David Baldwin

Plus I think if they said "We're from the Australian Government", the response would be "No, you're not, and by the way you're under arrest."

Laurent Giroud

Indeed, but it's hard to do effective diplomacy when the other party seems to have a weird definition of it though, cf hostage Diplomacy with the two Canadian they recently released... Addendum: which is why indeed, as HGA mentions in the video, working with all of China's neighbors is probably a better idea than touting nuclear-powered subs.

Michael Cohen

I'm not sure the moral relativism argument between China and the US is really a good idea Giordano. As irritating as US hegemony might be, I'm pretty sure that you'd like Chinese hegemony a lot less. And no the option isn't between US hegemony and no hegemony. Power vacuums get filled.

Kim Hillier

This government was going to introduce new laws to shut down satire like what Giordano produces. There's a video of decisin somewhere. It was after a take down of dutton a few years back.

thejuicemedia

Thanks for answering the question Inconcision, David and Kim! <3

Benny

I disagree. Build actual democracies where the will of the people is acted upon in full. Popular dictatorships are a people vaccum.

Michael Cohen

what's the mechanism by which that happens? Because if the US global hegemony withdraws, you'll find other powerful state actors co-opting weaker governments as puppet states. Including Australia.

Sandra Kirby

So refreshing to hear a man of gravitas and experience speak. Thank you Allen and Geordiano. Australia’s immaturity and absence of vision are writ clear. Certainly with the Coalition Government, planning seems non existent. All reaction with a mantra of ‘leaning in’ is the best it can do. ‘Planning to have a plan’!!!??? Wicked/ complex problems are swept aside because there isn’t the will or ability to go beyond populism, the election cycle or to stand up to the Murdoch monster. When the bounty of mineral wealth is exhausted or rejected, the low hanging fruit, and after undervaluing, even despising our intellectual, artistic, innovative and environmental riches for so long, wherever will Australia be? We need a Hawke/ Whitlam to revive and inspire. Wherever is a giant like these in the Australia of today?

Semiosis 101

Hello from Scotland. Another great video. I had hope England was the last bastion of bastardy fuckwittery with Boris Johnson at the help, but is looks like Aus is determined to join in. As COP26 is about to start in Glasgow, Boris and his corrupt thieving bunch of Tory cockwombles, vote to pump raw sewage into English and Welsh rivers and sea (thankfully Scotland's water is publicly owned). They're full of the same shit as your gov, but now so are England's and Wales' waterways.
