As hilarious as this is, it also represents a huge step forward for Joe. He knows that Dorothy is more than a little hostile towards him and highly skeptical about his relationship with Joyce, but because he also knows that Dorothy knows Joyce better than anyone he's coming to her for advice anyway. Even though he's aware there's a chance she might just tell him to fuck off.

Joyce's essentially good-hearted desire to help people - to help everybody - has now gone toxic on her. She's hit the point where people are taking advantage of her. Or are taking the piss. Though to be fair to Joe here, "What sort of date would your friend enjoy and find romantic?" isn't an entirely unreasonable thing to ask someone. But we know that Joe won't just want a few tips, he'll want a detailed plan.

Trouble is, while Dorothy has accomplished many admirable things, she hasn't worked out how to calm Joyce down. (Not surprising - her help always comes with an overtone of her own neuroses.) To borrow Roz's point, the only person who can achieve that is probably Joyce. And first, Joyce needs to want to be helped in that respect.

Slamming Joyce and Dorothy together like this is indeed kind of cruel. Their respective psychological issues, both probably manageable individually, are mutually reinforcing. Dorothy wants to help people; Joyce wants other people to help her rather than helping herself. Folie a deux, kind of. (Not the movie.) Dorothy seems to be getting a clue in panel 3, but sadly we know it won't stick. I'm just kind of sorry for Roz, who gave two lots of perfectly good advice when asked, and is being more or less ignored, twice over.

Yeah. Joyce's behavior w/ Dorothy does not seem to have ANY heterosexual explanation. She isn't *interpreting* her feelings as attraction, but sooner or later somebody's going to spell it out for her.
