should i make the punchline be about my difficulty in rendering that response or no

I chose no! And came up with something different.

I like them both, but linguistic nonsense is one of my favorite types of joke, so I'm glad I get to see the castoff.

I like the new one better ❤️

Same here. I love the old one but the new one is probably better, especially since it gives us a little more insight in Sarah and in Joyce's ever growing awareness of her friends :)

I know this is a moldy oldie but I can't resist adding it: Person visiting Ivy League college: "Excuse me, where's the library at?" Student: "You should know that you're not supposed to end a sentence with a preposition." Visitor: "Sorry, thanks. Where's the library at, asshole?"

Well yes. The new one develops some characterisation, whereas this one is a writer complaining about the fiddly bits of writing. (Not to blame writers for that, really; it's common enough. The classic example is starting with your character sitting in a white room, because you're sitting there staring at a blank sheet of paper. But it's a first-draft thing that you kill with fire in the revision.)

I'm an English major, so that original joke was just for me.

Glad we get to see the castoff but I appreciate the development from the final one
