Minzoku Bokumetsu

the pit of your stomach KNEW THE NATURE OF WILLIS

GPanda

Joyce: hi. Hmmm you look exactly like my brother who I’m supposed to meet today weird Jocelyn: 😣

C

"Oh my God, you're..." "YES-" "ME FROM AN ALTERNATE FUTURE WHERE I WAS MORE INTO SHORT-SLEEVED CLOTHING!" "...*takes a deep breath*"

Harold

"You look like a younger version of my pharmacist!"

Jey Siksa

The nature of Willis gives me a tummy ache, but im being so brave about it

Fart Captor

I wanna hug her so much 🥺

Harold

@Fart Captor: Which one?

Sajuuk-Khar

and she tries, oh my god does she try

That wonderful sightline in the last panel, is reinforced by the line of Joyce's upper arm as she leans into the frame. There's also the way Jocelyne's left hand moves slightly from the getting-attention gesture to the greeting gesture. Joyce may be closed for recomputation for a few seconds before Jocelyne gets the reaction she's waiting for.

Steven Herzog

Me in real life: oh wow, Joyce has been making so much progress, she'll be awkwardly accepting and eventually fully understanding, while Jocelyn is going to keep moving up the ladder of validation and comfort in her identity. Me in comic strip land: oh hell, there's gonna be a lot of drama around this, and who knows how it's going to play out over the next six months.

Fart Captor

Oh gee I don't know maybe the one that's fuckin terrified right now because coming out is scary as hell

Ragtime

Truely skeksis behavior.

Ragtime

That is why you have to cook thoroughly.

Emyriad

This strip has featured people falling off of moving vehicles and I am not sure I have ever felt more tension in waiting between strips.

Ernie O'Dell

I Wonder what Carla is up to right now...

Packy Anderson

I'm predicting (and I'm not saying nobody else is predicting this, just that I am) that Joyce's first reaction will effectively be "Who are you? I'm looking for my brother."

Gale Tazzin

They have the same fashion sense, it's amazing

Diane

Well, called the stairs. Please, please be kind Joyce, I know this may not happen right away, but I have to have faith.

E

The moment you know your coming out is gonna go sideways, captured perfectly.

AND SHE PRAYS

SkittleE

I think this is a good time to share how my sister came out to me: While dropping me off in Florida for an internship at Disney World, she hugged me goodbye, whispered that she's trans in my ear, and booked it into the rental car immediately. However, I have issues with auditory processing, so I didn't catch what she said and wasn't able to ask her to repeat herself. After that I had to finish moving into my apartment and go to urgent care for reasons of my godawful immune system, so it was a good few hours until I remembered to text her something along the lines of "Hey, I didn't actually hear what you said earlier, so if it was some big secret then whoopsies". I feel so bad about how stressful those hours must've been, especially considering she was spending a lot of that time in the Orlando airport. Feels like a topical story, though.

Morgan Byrd

Demanding that Steve pay attention to her

Avian

I mean, given how awkwardly supportive she was the moment she found out about carla I imagine she will be, especially with her actively trying to learn more before this. Her being normal about it just isn't happening, she will say all the wrong things with the best intentions, Jocelyn will likely find her sister trying her best endearing given what she knows about her.

aran

i think DW has set this up so that in contrast to learning about Carla, to whom she has no real emotional attachment, Joyce will fall into the mental trap of "you're not trans, for I, your close family member, would know if you were" and this will go poorly until someone gathers her up (and Joe may not be able to or feel his place to try)

Beck Chonigman

I think if anyone is going to be understanding of Joyce's earnest and extremely awkward attempts at allyship, it's her older sister she is now finding that she always had, who grew up in the same environment.

Phil_M

Mmm. Joyce has problems dealing with changes in things she's always taken as fixed (well, don't we all?), and although she does her best to do the right thing, her best is... *her* best. So she's likely to be painfully confused, at the very least. But that's fairly predictable. I'm more interested in how Joe ends up dealing with things. He's generally a live-and-let-live kind of guy, so I'm sure he won't be unpleasant about things, but he's going to be spending a lot of time helping extract Joyce's foot from her mouth while she's bouncing off the furniture.

Jasmijn Wellner

You ever do a double take so hard only your head was in frame?

Kelly (they-them)

I don't think Joyce recognizes Jocelyne. Transition goals

Harold

@aran: I disagree with the idea that Joyce "has no real emotional attachment" to Carla. Her chosen family is every bit as important to her, if not more so, as her biological family, and I think Carla (whether she herself likes it or not) has become part of it. Joyce loves her friends fiercely.

Sajuuk-Khar

Now I’m imagining an Ally Beardsley Skeksis. I want this to happen so badly. Someone tell Dropout.

Sajuuk-Khar

she prays every single day!!! for RRREVOLUTIONNNN

Sajuuk-Khar

God, that’s precisely both funny and devastating, if Joyce goes “Hey, sorry, I don’t know you. I have to go find my brother.”

Rob McBobson

Happened to my best friend. He was at a store buying something, and the cashier asked "Do you have a sister...?"

Sumit

I know!! I need this to go well!

SkittleE

Ah, she just repeated it over text and I asked what name and pronouns she would prefer I use, and also told her that I'm genderqueer so she had good instincts on who to tell first. Unfortunately, I doubt it's gonna deescalate so quickly for Jocelyne.

DeadyBear

Jocelyn knows her sister so I'm sure she's prepped for Joyce being weirded out by change and then ultimately okay.

aran

@harold Carla is pretty far removed from Joyce's inner circle, she's certainly not chosen family - and I guess I more meant that there is a deep history between Joyce and Jocelyne, whereas she didn't know Carla at all before she was out. But I was wrong anyway woohoo
