1) I don't think Joyce feels she needs step-to-step self-instructions for interacting with people. I mean, maybe she does, but Joyce doesn't feel she does.

2) the flip-notebook and jargon feels like it's slipping into more of a Dorothy/Dina space, really

3) Joyce already kind of suspected out-loud that Jennifer isn't, in fact, neurotypical, so: https://www.dumbingofage.com/2022/comic/book-12/04-dont-stop-billie-ving/slipshod/

Anyway. "...Grated?" as a punchline is much more understated, but I liked it.

I love these looks at unused strips or earlier versions. Sometimes it makes me look at characters or situations in a whole new way, and sometimes it's more about gaining additional appreciation for the final strip, either way it's always interesting!

Sky Starlight

On the one hand, I agree that the last panel definitely feels more like Dina or Dorothy. On the other hand, I feel that line so hard.

@Andrea Andrew: I know it's not what you meant, but I am now picturing Joyce punctuating her line in panel 5 of the unused strip by booping Jennifer

Packy Anderson

Though the writing songs to check out into a notebook feels like a Steve Rogers move.

Astariel

Do neurotypicals really dislike the sympathetic personal anecdote thing? That's my go-to move!

Maude Reads Things

I agree that it'd fit Dorothy and Dina more, and that grated is a better punchline. And also. As a neurotypical, I like the personal anecdote. I do it too, unless established it's not what someone wants.

Jasmijn Wellner

It can be interpreted as an attempt at anecdote one-upping rather than an expression of sympathy. It depends, as all social things do.

Pangab

You’ve got to find a way to include that last panel somewhere. Learning ‘stop including the personal anecdote when talking with neurotypicals’ has been such a big part of the life experience

Taigan

I don’t think anyone in this series can be called “typical,” neuro or otherwise.

Elise

I had yet to have learned this one. Huh. Explains a lot 😂

Elise

Ah, that makes sense. I do worry it comes across this way, but often CAN’T RESIST sharing the anecdote because BONDING and… reactions have gone either. Just ADHD life honestly.

Ty34er

I would argue that Walky and Joe are shockingly normal

Taigan

Walky has pretty clear signs of ADHD. And Joe’s sexual history is unusual no matter what television would have you believe. (Actual studies show the average number of sexual partners for an American male in his lifetime is 6.8)

Sporkaganza

I think in Walky's case they were talking more about everything else about him, not so much the ADHD. Arguably Walky is typical in many ways, but neuro- is definitely not one of them

Sporkaganza

This is the right call, I think. Joyce is autistic in less stereotypical ways than this. It's certainly affected her social interactions, but honestly I think she has strong people skills, particularly emotional intelligence

So glad you switched - "...Grated?" cracked me up when I saw it. Been there, Jennifer, been there.

Michael Steamweed

Yeah, I agree that the last panel sounds more like Dina's voice.

Can't stop Billie-ving
