Donuts are a recurrent motif in Dumbing of Age: Joe apologizes to the listed multitudes with donuts (even to his stepmother-to-be Stacy); Becky provides an early-morning donut to Dorothy; Amazi-Girl munches donuts on the roof of Maxwell Hall; now Amazi-Girl promises to provide donuts to an anonymous citizen. Joe's provision of a plain donut to Joyce is a landmark on the long trail of his developing devotion to her. The donut, indeed, is a deep signifier in Dumbing of Age. Its two-fold roundness provides both a solid foundation of basic pastry sweetness and an ample surface-area for even sweeter elaboration via icings, glazes, and little sprinkiy bits that celebrate the diversity of tastes and proclivities evident among the populous cast. Even the disciplined, ascetic Dorothy succumbs to the siren call of their tastiness, as does the naive-but-horny Joyce. Would it be an exaggeration to finger the donut as a major driver of the comic's plot? Yes, it would be. Would it be silly to expound endlessly on the role of the donut, as an ant could circle a donut's hole indefinitely. Uh, what was the question again? If you're going to the store, could you pick me up some donuts? Glazed old-fashioned, if they have them.
