The opposite problem, really.

HeroGirlsVT

Ayeeeee, April 1st is my birthday and now I get to think about this strip. :')

HenryVolt

If that's the case, then I guess Jennifer atleast understands now how Alice once felt before...she hast to atleast give her that.

hypermagical ultraomnipotence

It's amazing how observant Joyce is of everybody's relationships, especially in comparison to Jennifer

C.T. Phipps

FINISH HER Alice: What? *Joyce tears out Alice's heart*

MrShoggoth

Is it possible that Alice thinks it’s her that Joyce is talking about? I can’t remember if she knows about Ruth or not.

Bronxden

Jesus, that’s rough but maybe this can be the act of kindness of Joyce to speak for her so that Jenifer can grow and let her guard down

Packy Anderson

I mean, Jennifer's defining character trait is how UN-observant she is, which is why her major being journalism is so ironic.

Harold

@MrShoggoth: The last time Jennifer ran into Alice, she mentioned her "alcohol-fueled suicide pact death cult with my R.A.," to Alice's blank-faced horror (presumably). Joyce is providing helpful context!

EXEGESIS LIKE I WAS SAYING

Taffy

I really enjoy Alice.

T Nelson

I love how Alice always has a fan just offscreen to dramatically blow her hair

Dan Rabin

Amusing observation, but the little protuberances are in the same places from panel to panel suggesting that it's styled that way.

Dan Rabin

Alice spends this whole strip in the position she assumed at the end of the previous strip: facing fully in the direction Jennifer has gone, only turning her head to engage with Joyce. She opens up to Joyce more than I would have expected given their slight acquaintance, but Joyce has already signaled that the topic area is available. The borderless panels underline that this is an Alice strip. Alice clearly retains strong, unresolved emotions about Billie, but even with the flashback I don't feel we have enough information to understand why that would be so. Joyce's averted eyes and forward lean as she hints about Billie's involvement with Ruth show some sensitivity about saying too much, I think. This isn't going the way Joyce outlined to Jennifer, but Joyce is improvising competently towards the outcome she promised to Jennifer. Now Joe wants a threesome with Joyce's brains and heart simultaneously.

SkittleE

It's so diabolical how Jennifer is, even from outside the room, manipulating Joyce into being her friend and vouching for how she's grown as a person recently, all for her malevolent plot to regain contact with somebody she loved in high school (even if she didn't realize it was romantic love, because she's such a despicable teenager who has made bad and ridiculous decisions in the aftermath of her trauma, something Nobody Else In This Comic Would Ever Do). So sly and underhanded in her toxicity. Just disgusting.

SkittleE

Anyway I'm in lesbians with Alice's lipstick and I hope we see a lot more of her in the future

Onyx

.......I can't tell if this is an exhaggerated observation, or if you actually believe it. (Hoping the first cause the second isn't quite what's happening.)

Sam G

Not knocking you for disliking Billie (she's had a pretty horrific run haha) but I don't think she's manipulated Joyce? Calling it manipulation implies some level of calculation or intent but Billie doesn't seem like the type. She's honestly kind of an open book (even if she doesn't see herself that way) I don't think she could manipulate Joyce even if she put her mind to it LOL. This seems more like Joyce's honest assessment

Pangab

The illiterate will think you mean this seriously

5099 5618 v2.0

Or is it eisegesis? (The Internet wouldn't tell me what your word meant without also putting this word in front of me, just now)

Sajuuk-Khar

Exegesis is the “drawing out” of meaning in a text—critical analysis of intent and meaning based on evidence, in other words. Eisegesis is “inferring meaning from the reader”, i.e. reading a text in such a way to conform to your own biases. So let’s hope it’s not that!

Girlycore

It was satirical sarcasm about people who talk about Jennifer like she's a monster for being messy.

Sam G

@Pangab Lol it's called having autism 👍

Jasmijn Wellner

It took me a second to realise E wasn't serious about the diabolical plot thing. Partially because of the autism. Mostly because I've seen people write completely serious comments that are not very different from this one.

SkittleE

Just so we're clear, I am indeed being sarcastic and referencing all the people who have the most insane bad-faith takes about Jennifer in the comments. I forgot we're all autistic girlies here <3

Maude Reads Things

Sometimes we run out of rope to grab at and have to let go before we get pulled down too. I dunno if it's fair to wholly put that on Jennifer when Ruth was equally self-destructive but that self-destruction and the possibility of following scared Ruth. I dunno if Jennifer's really at the point Alice needs. Doesn't mean she won't ever get there though
