Joyce powers activate

MrShoggoth

*Homer Simpson voice* No she hasn’t. :D

MDL

Has she? Has she REALLY changed for anything other than the worst?

Moonrunes

It's times like this that I have to remember that Joyce has only known Billie for like, three months.

Uniquitous

She's a -lot- better at lesbian sex now.

Tom @ Magic Chopstick Games

“…she used to be, like, *super* into Kit Fisto, and I haven’t heard her mention him in *months *…”

Dan Rabin

Analysis withheld in awe of this strip's greatness.

tifani

Changed her name at least. (If going back to your birth name over a nickname counts as that).

Harold

@If It Bleeds: Well, it's February (or thereabouts) in comic time, so it's closer to five months. But point still taken.

Harold

Jennifer gets a red panel.

Kelly (they-them)

Amber's not even here- how did this moment for Jennifer become a traumatic trigger point for her?

C

Maybe she won't, but I have to believe she can and will...mostly because this is a comic strip and character growth makes for more interesting storytelling than stagnation.

C.T. Phipps

She's gone off alcohol, so yes. What she hates is being defined purely by her DUI.

MrShoggoth

There’s nothing worse than knowing you’ve made mistakes, taken what you thought were active steps to correct your flaws that led to them being made, and then the person who triggered that self-reflection and attempted improvement says that, no, you’re exactly the same and won’t change. Even if you *can* change, you’ll never improve in their eyes, because the mistakes you made are too great for them to look past.

Bronxden

Honestly I think this is good for Billie because sometimes in order to grow we have to hear the hardest thing we tend to avoid. Billie has baggage but she always tends to run from it rather than confronting it. Joyce was awesome to speak up for her but at this point for her to actually grow up she’s going to have to acknowledge the baggage and lower her guard in order to grow.

Maude Reads Things

Joyce is a good friend but hopefully Jennifer will be able to progress even more after hearing this

Maude Reads Things

Everyone can change. The fun story mileage comes from if they will. You can wring some pretty good answers out of a 'won't' but I think Jennifer will get there eventually

More seriously, this could be good for her to hear in the long term. At the moment she’s changed her self-destructive tendencies but in an unhealthy way. Alice’s rebuke could be the rock bottom push Jennifer needs to actually get better because she wants to, not to impress an old flame.

Private me

I have mixed feelings about this on one hand I don't think you should tell people that they can never change. everyone should have the chance to better themselves but on the other hand billie really has not changed at all in my opinion and people really do not have to put up with her behavior joyce the least of all.

Taffy

At that point, they're basically a write-off anyway, so there's not much point dwelling on them.

Girlycore

I think Jennifer has definitely changed, quite a lot, from how she was when we first saw her. That those changes are slow, or that she backslides a lot, are just human nature and the fact that she's 18/19 years old.

Onyx

Jennifer has changed, it's not necessarily a lot, and there have been backslides, but she's made slow progress. I think a lot of it is, as been shown in her backstory, she never had anyone to take care of her, so she is so used to not having anyone, and therefore taking are of herself first. But that was brutally unkind of Alice, and there was no reason for her to have said that.

Sajuuk-Khar

DO IT TO ‘EM, JOYCE B’Jennifer is a mess, she’s very bad at everything she tries to do, but she *does try* even if she fucks up real bad in every traumatized direction. Joyce is the perfect person to *actually spit truth* on this. All those years of Bible study about to pay off baybee

joe mcguire

Man, Jennifer aggravates the hell out of me but what the hell, Alice? You’re just looming around the corner waiting to say the most hurtful thing possible? What is the point of that? If you want to cut ties, cut ties. Actually separate and when you see her, go the other way. It’s one thing when she approaches you, but you initiated this contact, which was just mean. You both are drama sinks. You’re not any better than the person you claim is so toxic, and I find you so very aggravating because I know real people who are exactly like you 😅😂

Packy Anderson

I'm here for Joyce's upcoming speech.

C.T. Phipps

Alice doesn't want to break ties with Jennifer. She wants Jennifer to apologize.

C.T. Phipps

She was hoping she'd changed so she could take her back. She's as disingenuous as Jennifer.

C.T. Phipps

"Redemption isn't real!"

C.T. Phipps

Or it could drive her back to suicide. I think we can safely say that Jennifer was created because Billie would rather die than be Billie. She became Jennifer to have a sense of hope about her future.

C.T. Phipps

Alice reveals her relief as she's a massive Plo Koon fan.

Giant Speck

Plot twist: Joyce just walks the other way and the comic ends.

Sajuuk-Khar

To ramble a little on this: Joyce is good, very good, at *exegesis*—critical interpretation and analysis of a whole object, especially a text and VERY especially a sacred text, a piece of scripture. She’s good at it in a way that probably made her cultier family members kind of worried, but they couldn’t shit on her for it because exegesis is a thing of actual theologians and prophets, and so fundies can’t really shit on it openly without revealing that they believe in nothing but control, which inspires open revolt (see Ross vs. Becky. Becky is also really good at exegesis. It’s part of why she and Joyce are best friends). This capability is what lead her to discard her religion (she found no truth there) and it informs her for the better in like all her relationships and so yeah. She sees that B’Jennifer isn’t irredeemable and it’s beautiful.

Shane Wegner

Trying to be slightly better slightly counts I suppose. Getting better in small pieces might be one of the only realistic ways to do it for many.

Sumit

oooh a red panel. Havent seen those in a while.

tifani

If fall semester starts in August and they’re now in February it’s been closer to 6 months…and you can learn A LOT about somebody in half a year. Even in a non condensed , non webcomic timeline.

tifani

I think Billie has the bad luck of coping with trauma in a way that people looking in find irritating. You’re not this pissed off all the time if your life is going great. It reminds me of Joyce when she was going through her religion break up times with severe menstrual cramps and everyone in her life just kept wanting her back to the way she’d been. This world is so uncomfortable with open pain. I think Joyce is in a position to approach Billie with more empathy than anyone else she knows and to see her the most clearly. She doesn’t have the ghost of high school Billie to compare the person she knows now to. Not even Billie herself has that luxury.

tifani

Just remembered Joyce was there the last time Alice got into it with Billie during a lunch and it’s months later and Alice can see she’s still around Billie. So if anything the point that Billie can carry on friendships long term has been proven to Alice which was the entire point of this lunch so props to them for achieving their goal in record time.

tifani

Also Joe is there! Joe and Joyce the two biggest advocates and proof of ‘you CAN change if you want to!’ No better advocates for Billie could there be! (It’s almost like this shit was planned by some kind of omnipotent storyteller 😉)

Jasmijn Wellner

Oh no, the sad eyes! My one weakness! ... okay that's not true, I have many weaknesses

Rainfall

I like how you said "and the COMIC ends". It won't even just be this scene. The entire comic will end forever on Joyce walking away. /nods sagely

Dan Rabin

I too noticed the echo of Rachel's dictum in Alice's statement. We shall see.

Jasmijn Wellner

Joyce walks away and says "I thought going to college would be like a coming of age story, but it seem we're only dumbing of age". Then a black panel with the text "fin." in white. The comic ends forever.
