Dorothy: what am I going to do to protect my sister in law?

Sajuuk-Khar

Sarah has the right idea

Joyce: I guess I’m in a harem anime now.

"It's fine, I'll just stick with bottled up emotions over Joyce...I'm sure that will turn out fine...maybe I should talk with Becky for a bit."

A single in college is a worth more than gold, you need either a severe medical reason or connections. Being the deans kid has perks

The composition of panels 2 and 3 is very clever, with the two camera framings pasting the building-entrance together into a single arch, with two views of Joyce at slightly different distances and angles. Sarah and Dorothy take up similar vertical space on the page: Sarah because she's tall (but behind Joyce), Dorothy because she's closer to the camera. As we read from left to right, we move from Sarah's rather conventional welcoming of the weekend to Dorothy re-stonewalling her feelings about Joyce in the borderless panel 4. I venture that she is not encouraged by the exchange of glances in class. Those are Dorothy's feelings to manage, and I don't presume to judge her from my reader's perch, but Joyce has a very sensitive nose for Dorothy-secrets, and she's *going* to find out.

Sherlock Brown is on the case!! Will she uncover the mystery of Dorothy’s states, and will lead to the mystery of her own heart?

One of my favorite DoA strips, binding up hilarity with an insight into Joe's feelings that would take a wall of words to do in dialogue.

"Joyce, would it be weird if I fucked your sister?"

Luin

many, if not most, harem protagonists have no sexual allure at all and simply stumble into being desired by being somewhat oblivious and generally nice.

Luin

no one else is seen leaving bc its the end of semester and half the class stopped showing up

It sure is- where I went to school, I had the option between a guaranteed single or the chance of air conditioning... with roommates. I went for the single all three years I was eligible and made do with fans. No regrets.

Smoochie

…Dorothy’s moral lapse wouldn’t go that hard… Would it? Fucking the sister of your best friend and crush, simultaneously cheating on your boyfriend and the idea of even dating your closest friend for momentary comfort…And oddly— And let’s not even begin to talk about deciding to test your newfound bisexuality on a transwoman? Like…What? WHAT DOES YOUR /YUP/ MEAN DOTTY!?

Packy Anderson

I had a single... only slightly larger than my bed. It was worth it.

Girlycore

That's not rly how it works lol

Astariel

She is a lesbian love sleuth, after all.

Harold

The real sleuth was the lesbians we made along the way, or whatever

Jasmijn Wellner

What? Who's saying anything about "testing [her] bisexuality" and why does it matter Jocelyn is trans?

Smoochie

I wanna state in advance I might be assuming the dirt worst of Dorothy right now because she’s crashing out on trying to understand herself and what she wants. Also Jocelyn is a woman, point blank period. I am just stating transwoman for how this potential scenario may unfold. Dorothy right now realizes she feels something heavy for Joyce. What I’m afraid of is that she is going to try and segueway that into potentially trying to come onto Jocelyn. It’s bad enough the idea of trying to, sort of apply the identity of someone you can’t have at the moment to someone else who looks similar. I’m just suggesting it’s even more fucked up doing it to someone who is not only the sister of your attraction, but Jocelyn has fought hard to have her own identity. To be her own person, true to herself. It makes what Dorothy may do even worse, morally. That make any sense or am I just applying some insane villain logic to Dorothy just not knowing what to do with herself?

hilariously i saw another trans woman theorize dorothy might try to mack on jocelyne like a month ago, eagerly anticipating what a tire fire that would be. that dorothy would try to squash her feelings for joyce by, like, uh i mean. we can be honest here. i can, as a trans woman, just kinda say this stuff, i think? four months into hrt you are kind of in a liminal space. our author has neither the tools nor the inclination to present jocelyne like this, but most folks who are this early are gonna look, uh. well, kinda like a guy with tiny tits and softer skin. jocelyne is benefitting from a pretty simple artstyle and having started kinda twinky. so like. dorothy's struggling with her attraction to girls in general and joyce in particular, and here's someone the stupid cis brain might, whatever its better intentions, register as a boy! unthreatening to dorothy's internal metric of her own sexuality, with enough of a resemblance to joyce that dorothy can get it out of her system, and enough of a connection to girlhood that maybe dorothy can use her to slowly connect those frayed wires in her head. being perceived like this, being used like this, would do absolutely terrible things to jocelyne, psychologically. would not be healthy for dorothy either once she realized what she's put on this poor woman. and i don't think jocelyne would let dorothy actually hit it, because, you know, extremely transparent to a trans woman when a cis person has some kinda complex about them could this happen? i dunno! it'd be very...discoursey, i think. a few months ago i didn't think this comic would broach stuff like, say, dina working out the difference between presentation and identity, or joe examining his own cissexism, so who knows. it'd also, frankly, make it really tough to sympathize with dorothy in the future! it'd be fun as hell to read, though. someone should fic it or something.

Smoochie

Thank you for explaining this better than I ever could in my clunky manner.

Astariel

I really don't think that's what's going on here. I think that Dorothy's just scrambling for anything to say to Joyce that doesn't relate to her own sexuality or attraction to her best friend.

Harold

Also, I'm pretty sure that even if Dorothy *did* try to hit on Jocelyne, Joss would shut her down instantly, as gently as possible. For the reason Seth Aaron Hershman specified above, and also because she's *Jocelyne*, and because she probably already suspects Dorothy has a thing for Joyce.

yeah, again, to be clear, not saying it was gonna happen, just that i'm not the first transfemme to spot the thread and neither is smoochie (assuming smoochie is a transfemme at all)

Harold

Becky singing Elton John inspired this imagined conversation between her and Dina about another Elton song: Dina: "Wait, he is an astronaut, correct? But he does not understand the science?" Becky: "Like he says, it's just his job, five days a week." Dina: "One would think understanding the science would be a prerequisite for the position." Becky: "Yeah, whatever. At least this one don't try to rhyme 'sugar bear' with 'didn't ya, dear.' "

Andrea Andrew

Joyce: please don’t end up like the hat you inexplicably dated and is now inexplicably dating beautiful Sal, Dorothy! Dorothy: you mean Danny? Did you say Sal is beautiful? *thinks to herself* note to self, grow hair long and wavy.

Harold

@Andrea Andrew: [Dorothy stabs self in hand]

Daniel

I sincerely doubt that that's what she's thinking.

Jasmijn Wellner

@Harold: no, Dorothy is a perfectionist. She's gonna get Amber to stab her hand!

Sajuuk-Khar

Goddamnit, Harold, now you have me imagining Brat!Sarah winding Brat Tamer!Tony up with very mild clowning around resulting in SEVERE DAMAGE to his single room
