There is no straight way to explain that last sentence. Which is awesome.

Ria

On y va la gang 😎

Noelle Eve Palmer

my girlfriend absolutely screamed at that last line

Sajuuk-Khar

Joyce, you do recall that after you touched Joe’s penis for the first time he laid there in awe and rapture The dude is not exactly a Dark Souls boss of sexuality

Andrea Andrew

Yeah, Dorothy’s totally just talking about Joe, not herself.

C

...Holy shit. Holy shit, holy shit, holy shit... This entire strip...holy shit.

Harold

@Andrea Andrew: What makes this strip work so very, very, very beautifully is that she's talking about both Joe and herself. And, on some level, Joyce seems to know that, or at least have a glimmer of that knowledge.

Fart Captor

Hehe, it's a load off all right 😏

Rubia

This kills the Dorothy. ...And possibly some readers.

5099 5618 v2.0

I am now curious if Joe has just already said he doesn't mind Joyce also dating Dorothy.

Harold

And, of course, the song in the background providing the perfect can't-even-call-it-subtext-anymore. Remarkable.

Crunchos cereal

So, Becky is waiting just outside the frame for her cue?

Morgan Byrd

Jesus H Christ oh shit oh fuck oh shit oh fuck

C

The choice of music as Joyce straight up says how easier it'd be with Dorothy ...Just... *chef's kiss*

Maude Reads Things

Oh Jesus Christ, this is just gonna set the comments on fire

Harold

Hopefully she's still being distracted by Dapper Dina

Girlycore

Oh yeah, I forsee explosions

Simon Magid

@Andrea Andrew: I am glad to see that your ship is happening. It may face troubled seas, mind you.

Biblioholic1993

Joyyyyyyyce you are sO BAD at not causing gay panic!

Girlycore

You're like a dog that caught a squirrel right now.

Sajuuk-Khar

the betting pools are all “Dorothy runs away after either a very momentary intimacy or to keep from Doing That” and “Dorothy and Joyce make out torridly in an avalanche of bad decisions” and I’m just out here like Adam Sandler in Uncut Gems putting it all on “insanely awkward threesome with a thin veil of sex ed” This is how I win

Kiri Blackthorn

well i sure picked a hell of a time to upgrade to the $5 tier

Packy Anderson

Wait. There's a pink background behind the comic with transparency?

Dan Rabin

I'm still unwilling to offer hopes or predictions about what will happen next, but this strip houses the best possible version of this part of Joyce and Dorothy's necessary communication. What Dorothy says is true true true, and she's making the point that Joyce's best friend and protector would make. And it works—Joyce trusts and accepts Dorothy's advice, and is relieved. Just look at that relaxed face in the (borderless) fourth panel! Then Joyce's zinger in the final panel is the exact nuance we need to hear between you-know-she-wants-to and no-evidence-Joyce-is-into-it. Joyce voices a straightforward wish that her committed step with Joe could be as familiar and safe as her relationship with Dorothy. She's trusted Dorothy to initiate her into sexual behavior atop the multi-purpose fun-sized vibrating units; now she accepts and trusts Dorothy's advice, but has understandable difficulty transferring her feeling of security to Joe. Joyce may very well have sexual desire mixed into her feelings about Dorothy—perhaps in a very high proportion—but it seems from this strip that this is working in a different way for her than Dorothy's attraction to Joyce is working. We shall see. Dorothy can confess; Dorothy can keep quiet; Dorothy can escalate the sexiness of the situation; Dorothy can diffuse it; Joyce herself can accept or refuse such an escalation; Joyce can continue her speech into the next strip and grab the initiative for herself; Joyce and Dorothy could even *talk about it*. I was going to comment that the ball is in Dorothy's court, but they're really on the same team here, and I don't mean they're the One True Pairing to come out of this.

David M Willis

I think the transparency automatically picks up the color in the first pixel (upper left) or something, and instead of a black border today, there's a bright red-pink musical note.

Packy Anderson

I mean, I like it! I just haven't noticed a background that bright before.

Girlycore

Lmao congrats on your ship starting to sail.

Leon

This is dangerously close to the Joyce/Becky kiss setup. Given Joyce's anxiety and sexual issues, her candid statement here is unexpected (saying it sober at least) at the same time it isn't. There's a level of security and trust exclusive to Dorothy. Lines are continuing blurring. Pretty hard to predict what's gonna happen next here.

C

Look, sometimes, betting on 00 is the winning play, lol.

N

Pretty sure Bisexual Polyamorous Atheist is Carol's worst nightmare, or at least on the way.

Dracon Atrox

Be careful Joyce, you might lose your virginity twice tonight!

Leon

I think the big point here is Joyce isn't afraid of "failure" with Dorothy. A level of levity and lack of pressure to perform that's inspired by the love she feels for and from her. Joyce is consciously comparing Joe and Dorothy in that regard and it's specifically about sex right now. Of course, you might've heard something along the lines of "oh, it'd be so much easier/simpler with you" by someone referring to their friend versus their lover, but considering Joyce's character and the context, it's a big statement that makes other things she's said come to light. Remember she drunkenly confessed to wanting to watch Dorothy have sex (while covering Walky's body with her hand) to ease her anxiety about sex with Joe. Now she's soberly saying this would be so much easier if it was Dorothy she was having sex with instead. These two statements and scenarios are linked, and I assume you're meant to get a clearer idea of Joyce's mind here by remembrance. Also, this moment is explicitly connected to their other rounds via "we learned to let each other say yes" by Joyce and we still haven't gotten to how it relates to what is currently happening. There's an underlying desire displayed by at least one of them in all these moments I've mentioned.

Taffy

I promise to behave

Taffy

"Dorothy, I should probably confess I'm pretty strongly attracted to you."

Mohmi

$20,000 down, 3 point parlay on awkward kiss, 10 point parlay on sesbian lex, and a side bet on Kevin Garnett shooting a buzzer beater.

Bagge

Because things are VERY easy for Dorothy right now, right?

Bronxden

At this point I can’t try to think what’s gonna happen next because I’m am at the edge from this suspense. All I can hope is that this build up doesn’t lead to a Ross and Rachel of “will they, won’t they”

Grace Serenity

I doubt she knows what those first two mean

Terra Bruder

I think something that gets missed when people read the shippers' comments shipping ships is that this experience is so familiar to older sapphics. Cisheteronormativity is powerful, and the number of stories of I've heard of "gay stuff I said when I thought I was straight" could fill two Libraries of Congress. It's less that I assume that all experiences like Joyce's are queer and more that my queer experiences are reflected there.

Ste Saunders

She knows that they mean you are going to hell! (Because anything she doesn't really understand means that, it's easier than trying to actually learn)

PaperRabbits

I think part of the comfort and trust from Dorothy, is that she believes Dorothy will never judge her and knows how to do exactly this thing she just did- big sweeping statement with a sense of authority (no not like that) behind it. Dorothy is the smart, put together one who seems to know stuff a lot of other people don't. I'm almost positive she doesn't mean literally she wants to sleep with Dorothy- like I feel like Joyce could definitely be Bi-Romantic, but I'm iffy on if she's bi-sexual at this point.

C

Well, it certainly adds to the mood building in the strip, lol.

Dan Rabin

Terra Bruder: thanks for the perspective!

Leon

That's partially true, but a recent development of Joyce's is seeing Dorothy and her advice as fallible (dumbingofage.com/handkypanky/) and removing her from a pedestal. In this particular instance, Dorothy is the only person Joyce would turn to, not because of her expertise, but because she associates Dorothy and their relationship with sexual discovery amongst other things. Yes, Joyce's admission at the end alone doesn't mean she wants to sleep with Dorothy. When you connect it with other interactions and statements she has made, it is a loaded statement that could mean that, though. That's the significance of it as this chapter is about to reach its climax. At this point, it's extremely unlikely Joyce is solely bi-romantic if she's bi because all the aforementioned interactions and statements are tied with sexual desire or activity. Joyce herself is not unaware of the implications of some of these things, which is why some people let their imaginations go a little wild during this segment of the story.

Kyle

Willis, you're killing me here. Not for any particular reason, it occurs to me that you could increase the patreon preview window one day every month for the next thirty years, with a one year buffer.

Shane Wegner

IS it lust, or more admiration, appreciation and camaraderie? The read I still get is Joyce likes Dorothy’s company, not that she lusts after Dorothy’s body. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Shane Wegner

I’m with your take on this too Rabbit. And I can see something like “It’s not that I literally want to, but I appreciate how relaxed and easy things feel between us.”

Astariel

Oh my God, Joyce! Dorothy: "That could be arranged."

Harold

@Simon Magid: Andrea dangling from the mast as the storm rages, whooping and hollering and shaking her fists at the heavens like Lieutenant Dan

Harold

@Taffy: Can't help but notice you didn't specify *how* you'll behave

Patrick Duke

This is Dorothy's daydream, isn't it? Joyce is still in the bathroom, isn't she?

Harold

@Patrick Duke: We'll know for sure if Horse suddenly appears in the room

T Campbell

RUPERT GILES: "I believe the subtext here is rapidly becoming, uh, text."

Andrea Andrew

Dorothy: we will never be on a break.

Flounder

Willis, you've got me on the edge of my seat here!

Uniquitous

Brought to you by FanDuel!

Leon

Why not both? Also, there's available emotes???

Astariel

Ooh, good quote!

S

I’m stressed because I feel like we haven’t had a Damn you, Willis! in awhile.. 🫣

PaperRabbits

If she's saying these things, aware of the implication, then imo it's going against Joyce's characterization pretty strongly. (Joyce seems very much like someone who is loyal and committed, so I can't see her actions here as intentionally loaded with desire FOR dorothy in a sexual context.) Everything we've seen of Joyce shows that she's a bit ignorant, but deeply considerate/has a fair amount of empathy. And most people who cheat... don't really think abt others as much as Joyce does.

Ph

Do you ever think about how much money you could make if you gave an extra day of preview for every additional $5?

David M Willis

i do, but that would involve uploading 370 strips into 370 different tiers every single day

Leon

I'm talking about years of strips that coincidentally coincides with Dorothy's awakening to her own feeling about Joyce, not what is specifically happening within the last week or so with Dorothy. Joyce isn't deliberately teasing or leading Dorothy on right now, to my knowledge at least, and you misinterpreted what I said. It's a fact Joyce is aware of how some things she has said or done can be framed as gay or she says something that has no heterosexual explanation unbeknownst to herself (Joyce doing something that implicates Dorothy as an object of desire is used as a punchline multiple times): dumbingofage.com/weirdest-2/ dumbingofage.com/meepbeep/ dumbingofage.com/iloveyous/ dumbingofage.com/observe-2/ dumbingofage.com/cheating-2/ dumbingofage.com/windowshopping/ That's all I remember off hand at the moment. Now you remember how this specific sequence is linked (dumbingofage.com/foureyedblondes - and note how the idea of Joyce not knowing what she's saying is specifically brought up here, it's for a reason) to the laundry and the drinking with Dorothy that both relate to Joyce's sexual frustration and anxiety in some revelatory capacity, which Joyce herself does in the story (dumbingofage.com/curating-2/) when she's commissioning Dorothy to order a list of non penetrative sex acts she should try. Basically, you gotta be blind not to see the potential implications (we established Joyce says things that may reveal something about herself she isn't aware of at this point) because the current tension is dictated by it coupled with the audience's knowledge of Dorothy's feelings. It's clearly a deliberate orchestration by the writer regardless of how this situation will turn out. It's good writing that shouldn't be overlooked. I hope that was all comprehensible.
