OK that was a bit funny to me tbh.

...Oh, is Dorothy going to talk to Becky about this? Becky could sympathize with her hurt...

The25th

Dotty this is not the time recreate the Blair witch

ArchineerLock

They share a common struggle lol. Maybe Becky will be able to help Dorothy with her feelings.

Sajuuk-Khar

Becky, I know Dorothy isn’t moving that much in each individual panel, but that’s no call to start harmfully casting her in your Five Nights at Freddy’s fan game. And furthermore—

Katrina Marie Paton

The two girls who have/had a crush on Joyce. This could be an interesting conversation.

MrShoggoth

…she’s going to take the Yale acceptance, isn’t she? To get away from Joyce. Is that why this arc is called The Only Exception, cause that’s the only thing that’ll make her reconsider?

Sajuuk-Khar

Becky: Alright so step one is, you gotta cry silently into a pillow fer a whole week. Dorothy: …Already working on it. Becky: Progress, Dotty! Good! Now step two is you meet another girl and she’s the coolest fuckin’ girl in history. Except she’ll hafta be the second coolest cause Dina’s taken.

Sajuuk-Khar

….GOD that would be so terrible but also so so on brand. Oh no. 😬

Dan Rabin

This one took me a while. In panel 3 we see Becky's messy pile; in panel 5 Dorothy is staring at the closet door, and we see a neat pile of clothes, but it's where the messy pile was. Dorothy got up and tidied Becky's pile. This is probably what woke Becky up, and it's just the kind of thing Dorothy might do when she's too agitated to sleep. [mistaken overthinking, per Willis—see below]

Dan Rabin

You're thinking of the French Foreign Legion, not Yale.

Sajuuk-Khar

I think that’s just the same messy pile from a different angle, though

Harold

@Katrina Marie Paton: Interesting, indeed. It depends on how much Dorothy tells Becky - about how she now realizes she feels about Joyce, about What Almost Happened, about everything. I have no idea how this might go, and I can't wait to find out.

Leon

Joyce is one of the main reasons she stayed in the first place (maybe initially the main reason), so that wouldn't make much sense. That along with the original context the song was used in, which would be related.

L2theBell

The Pile of Lesbos beckons…

Chloe

Happy birthday to me ;A; poor Dorothy ❤️❤️❤️

Lia

oh my goddddd the becky dorothy conversation right now............

Dan Rabin

@Sajuuk-Khar: I briefly thought so, too, but in panel 5 the clothes are folded, not crumpled, and they're stacked neatly. In panels 2 and 3 I think Dorothy is looking at the pile.

TobyTura

i have really wanted her to reconsider Yale ever since she turned it down. if it has to be because of sapphic rejection fuck it i'll take it!!!

Fart Captor

Becky: "Dorothy's haunted" Dina: "What" Becky: *loading a pistol and getting back in the loft bed* "Dorothy's haunted."

Darastrix

@Dan Rabin No, I don't think so - it only looks neater by virtue of seeing it from the other angle and cropped in the panel so it looks a little less chaotic. If Dorothy had folded them, they would be neat, stacked rectangles without being staggered into a slope. If you zoom, you can really tell they're just unfolded clothing laying on other pieces of clothing. With no highlighting to give her gaze any hint of direction, I think she's just got a thousand-yard stare in the dark and isn't really looking at anything at all.

Dan Rabin

OK, I had myself convinced, but there probably would have been a clearer depiction if Dorothy folded the clothes.

Jey Siksa

Blair witching is always a good sign

AE Gonzalez

Add Ruth to complete the set.

Shane Wegner

Dorothy.exe stopped responding.

Leon

I'm thinking there's no way Dorothy actually talks to Becky about what's bothering her atm for a number of reasons. Becky learning about this needs a more dramatic set up. It's been an expressed fear of hers for so long. More time is needed to showcase Joyce's reciprocation to get the most out of it, too. The three people (Amber, Joe, Booster) who definitely know about Dorothy's feelings have no reason to divulge it so I'm assuming she puts the pieces together herself in a later storyline. Same with the suspecting people like Danny and Sarah. Not sure if we should add Carla and Ruth to that list now.

Johanne

I think this is actually a smaller pile on Dorothy's side, given the position of the door in the strips. I think usually-organized-Dorothy is too sad to put away her clothes, whether or not they are folded

Daniel

I dunno, Booster is an asshole, I could see them divulging it on a whim...

Jasmijn Wellner

I don't think Booster would out someone to be an asshole, Daniel

Jasmijn Wellner

Look at the floor. Dotty hasn't moved between panel 3 and 5. It's the same pile of clothing, just cropped and from a different angle.

zee

Just because you don't like booster doesn't mean they're into outing other queer people who are still closeted :/

Jasmijn Wellner

She needs the sage advice of a lesbian love sleuth!

Andrea Andrew

I’m sure she’ll totally be cool with her and Joyce.

Sajuuk-Khar

Becky, seeing Dorothy’s grief, only spends five minutes going “I TOLDJA CHICKS WERE AWESOME, DOTTY” instead of ten

Harold

Dorothy, on top of everything else running through her overactive brain right now, is likely scared of how Becky will react if/when she finds out about Dorothy's self-discovery (remember how terrified she was when she thought Becky knew about Laundry Night). Becky's always been hyperaware that Joyce has a huge friend-crush on Dorothy, but she's been able to joke it off and channel her jealousy into the frenemy-joshing we've all come to know and love/loathe, because Joyce and Dotty are both straight and there's no way...right? But now, Everything Has Changed. Part of me desperately wants them to have this conversation; but part of me is dreading it as well. I suspect it's the same for Dorothy. And, deep down, it might be the same for Becky as well.

Girlycore

Yeah, seems like maybe you've misread Booster's entire personality there, Daniel. I think I could see them wanting to pry it all apart when maybe they should be offering comfort, but not outing her on a whim. That's a wild accusation.

Andrea Andrew

Wait, Dorothy kept laundry day a secret from her? Just kidding. I forgot what her reaction was when trying to hide it.

Girlycore

OMG so I just noticed that Dorothy isn't TURNING, she's facing in one direction and the "camera" angle changes to show us Becky's view before the "jumpscare" comment. The lighting on her is SO PERFECT that I could visualize a 3D situation from a 2D strip of panels and that is genuinely so impressive to me. I aspire to be good enough at art to include that kind of subtle direction to the viewer.

Uniquitous

Reminds me of Azumanga Daioh, Osaka with the big knife. All Dorothy needs is a blade to really make the scene!

David M Willis

....i think the main site's hovertext makes that exact reference

David M Willis

*goes to go copy/paste* "give her a butcher knife, let's make this an azumanga daioh ref" lol

Andrea Andrew

Damn, David! That was one of my favorite anime scenes as a kid! You have good taste.

tifani

Oh I love this

tifani

She’s been in the exact same place (except this time Joyce reciprocates) and despite the front she puts up she IS Dorothy's friend. I think this is EXACTLY the right person to talk to.

Railway Series Book Club

I feel like maybe what happens here at most is Dorothy says something cryptic about the whole thing after Becky is like "jesus girl what are you doing up at this hour", and its just enough for Becky to put the pieces together but not enough to like, have a complete timeline/understanding of what went down between the two. I don't think Becky would freak out about any of this unless she learned Joyce reciprocated any of those feelings, though.

Crunchos cereal

It’s slightly odd reading real-world news about IU Bloomington and protests on the Dunn meadow. At least because of this comic I know where they are.

Uniquitous

In my best Beetlejuice: "We're simpatico!"

Edwin I Callahan

I think Becky is assuming Dorothy’s suicidal. She’s afraid Dorothy is going to take a dive out the window. Why else would Becky wake up, take a look at her roommate and yell “Jump scare.” Remember, Becky missed her mother’s suicidal ideation and is haunted by the fear she’ll miss it again if someone she cares for is in the same situation.

Ronokki

Given Bossters actions at the floor meeting soon after being introduced to everyone, their desire to pry it all apart could be what leads to outing someone. I think you are right that they wouldn't crassly and openly do it but I could see them doing it in a scene where Dorothy is being secretive about it and they basically just drop completely non subtle hints that are all but saying it.

Harold

@Edwin I Callahan: Or, she may be referring to the common horror-movie trope known as the "jumpscare."

David M Willis

yeah, becky has her concerns, but she's referring to the horror movie term

Girlycore

Oh jeez, THAT was the storyline called "Turning Saints into the Sea" I feel like a dummy for not noticing it was about jealousy.

Edwin I Callahan

I’ve never seen Blair Witch, which based on other readers’ comments is what is being referenced in this particular strip. Anyway, sorry for going that dark right away.

Bagge

You have been Dottied!
