The Gang Gets Kidnapped by ICE

C

Oh boy, this could get complicated.

Ria

URRRRP

C.T. Phipps

Pretty cool power they know exactly when the police are going to show up.

el

I'm pretty sure I know the reasons, but because I think someone else may be more informed in protest starts, why is Jocelyn so worried about this?

David M Willis

the characters may have been noticing the chainlink barricades that i've been slowly adding to the backgrounds

Railway Series Book Club

uh oh, accidentally created the perfect conditions for kidnapping in our haste! oopsie! (tbf amazi-girl could be prowling around over here so like, that could be something in their favor at least)

HenryVolt

Oh shit...ok look it's all good as long as they get out before sun down.

MiqoRems

People arrested at protests with nobody outside to look for them have a tendency to just... go away for a long while.

Harold

@el: If I'm understanding correctly, everyone is supposed to be clearing out of there, as of way before now. They're *not* clearing out on their own... so they're going to *be* cleared out.

Harold

Fortunately Dina will appear, because Dina.

Maybeeus

It's almost like having a date rescue mission wombo combo was a horrible idea. Jocelyne is witnessing first hand what kinda wacky college these two get up to (recklessly and repeatedly endangering themselves because the alternative involves them admitting that they're gay.)

C.T. Phipps

Ooof. I continue to admire your subtler touches.

C.T. Phipps

I mean Jocelyn believes superheroes aren't real.

MrShoggoth

Ruh roh, Raggy, rhey’re rin rouble!

The25th

Well y’all are stuck here anyway, might as well work out y’all problems

C.T. Phipps

They have to be reported missing first.

Fart Captor

Gonna be honest I didn't notice those at first and just took it on faith that the cops weren't being subtle about preparing to escalate the situation

Fart Captor

Trapping protesters in and then violently arresting them for not leaving is one of cops' favorite tricks after declaring curfew with zero notice and arresting them for not already being in their homes (where they may still get tear gassed if they just live too close to the protest site)

Megh

I was so confused why the fence wasn't visible in the first panel of them arriving until I read this. The gate wasn't being closed behind them it was being placed!

shiftdruid

police brutality? in MY civil rights? it's more likely than you'd think!!

Shane Wegner

And that’s for police departments NOT corrupted by mafia cops.

Dan Rabin

So I commented a few strips back that I expected a dark turn, but even having general darkness confirmed doesn't make me think I'm making useful predictions—the possibilities are still snaking and slithering around one another. Be that as it may, the initial motivation of finding and warning Jocelyne is now all used up. She's in the first four panels, receiving their message and expounding on the danger, then we get two panels of Joyce and Dorothy determining that they're insufficiently prepared. They both have a sense of danger, but Dorothy must be feeling especially bad because she hasn't risen above their collective level of unwisdom, and because she's Failing to Protect Joyce.

John C. Kirk

I really like the shift in focus here. It's been in the background for a while (e.g. Leslie advising them to leave), but I think this strip is genuinely informative. I'm in the UK, and 10 years ago I went on a couple of anti-Brexit marches (with a million other people), but they were basically just ignored by authorities. I.e. we didn't achieve anything but nobody was in danger either. So, they fell into the category of "mildly subversive" rather than "wildly subversive". I'm (vaguely) aware of what's been happening in the USA recently, and I saw comments here from people saying "I hope they leave their phones behind", but it's good to see Jocelyne explain the reasoning behind that. As I understand it, there are 2 main concerns, as per this Wired article: https://www.wired.com/story/how-to-protest-safely-surveillance-digital-privacy/ a) You could be tracked (i.e. the authorities will know who's connected to the local phone mast). b) Your phone could be seized and unlocked (particularly if you use biometrics). Personally, if I had to visit the USA, I'd leave my regular phone at home. All my social media accounts have randomised passwords (stored in a password manager), so I couldn't reveal that information even if I wanted to. However, I wouldn't be concerned about the authorities knowing I'm at the airport (because they'd have seen my ticket, passport, etc). So, it's interesting that Jocelyne is focussing on the first risk while I'm focussed on the second.

John C. Kirk

Hopefully there's a transitive aspect to this. E.g. if we assume that Leslie has told someone where she is, that means that she won't disappear. Then she can ask about Joyce and Dorothy, and they can ask about Jocelyne, etc.

Kelly (they-them)

I don't think they are too white. Didn't a famous Canadian get detained while traveling?

Kelly (they-them)

These two are kind of bad at this, huh? And they can't use Joyce's super power of transporting to Dorothy's location because she's already here. Maybe they can insist that Becky and Dina aren't gay. Then Becky will magically show up with Dina and then Dina can just open the fence gate, unnoticed

Tim Mitchell

I suspect Dorothy is about to see some things she can’t ignore. I think someone is about to get radicalized.

Andrea Andrew

I think this is what she needs. It might give her a new sense of purpose. I think Joyce will gain something from this as well.

Tim Mitchell

I think this is going to payoff for her whole recent arc (well one of them ;-))

Ria

Charlie, Carla, pls save ur fellow quirky sapphics 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Harold

That 7/1/26 preview panel on the DoA Tumblr kind of makes it look like Joyce is going to get even more radicalized than Dorothy. Like Joyce just did some Project Mayhem-type shit, and as they're running off hand-in-hand Dotty's all, like, "Holy FUCK, Joyce, what did you DO?!?"

Maybeeus

I absolutely cannot get over Dorothy's face in panel 3. "Yup! It was my idea! Aren't you proud?" their dynamic is like finding two stay dogs on the road while biking home from school and giving them a snack out of kindness and then making your way back home only to find they've both followed you. I heard of matching each others freak but this is something else.

Maybeeus

In this analogy Joyce is a golden retriever and Dorothy is a yellow lab. I just think you need to know this.

Harold

How it started: Panel 3 Dorothy How it's going: Panel 6 Dorothy

TobyTura

theres so many blonde white women on this strip theyre blurring at the edges and becoming an eldritch horror

Jeremy AR

Well we have these 3, them there is daisy, conquest, the cherry mormon girl whose name i don't remember

Grace Serenity

Sure! There are departments that are corrupt just for the fun of being corrupt without organized crime's influence!

David M Willis

I think Toby means specifically in this strip, where they look like a repeating wallpaper pattern.

TobyTura

yes! a human centipede of a strip

Harold

@Jeremy AR: Just for the record, "the cheery [I assume you meant that instead of 'cherry'] mormon girl" is Agatha. There's also Grace, the one who puts the Gra in GraMandIerra. And Leslie!
