The first four panels are a continuation of Joyce and Dorothy's talk from the previous strip. I'm less interested in whatever denial is present in Dorothy's lines than I am in the fact that Joyce is prodding for understanding, and Dorothy is basically letting her. Unlike the scene in bed, sexual interaction isn't immediately available here, so they have to use words—and that's good for moving towards understanding. In panel 3 Joyce visits her I'm-responsible-for-this-mess space. Think about the day she broke off with Ethan: she seemed to think that she had done a horrible, horrible thing to have roped him into the relationship. Jocelyne's appearance interrupts the talk, and also ties off the bit of plotting that got Joyce and Dorothy into the protest site. Joyce can deliver her message. The arc might or might not move into Jocelyne's response, but the previous establishment of Jocelyne as a good listener in her talk with Dorothy may come to the fore. Jocelyne obviously looks worried about their safety, and the foreshadowed violence might start. We're in that familiar this-could-go-so-many-ways space that keeps us reading.

He accidentally misgendered her in the text, because he's still getting used to all this. (Little if any of this is likely to be true, but it would be nice, wouldn't it?)

Did anyone else notice that Joyce actually said Danny’s name rather than refusing to acknowledge his existence? I sometimes wonder if she only ignores him because she subconsciously hates that he’s an ex of Dorothy. Eskimo buddies should get along.

When Dorothy said "It's a trauma response", I initially thought that "it" meant "not going to Yale". However, I now think that she's fast-forwarded through the conversation and replied to the unspoken implications. Joyce (spoken): "You've said many times that you'd never decide to give up on Yale for any one person. Not Danny, not Walky--" Joyce (implied): "But you've given up on Yale for me. That means that you love me more than the people you've dated." Dorothy (implied): "You're just saying that because we almost had sex last night. And yes, I liked it when you put your hand on my face. But that's not because I'm in love with you." Dorothy (spoken): "It's a trauma response! I told you." @Andrea Andrew: Pretty sure the Hat Guy thing was just a funny running gag playing off how Joyce felt about him in the Roomies!/Walkyverse. Now that she's dating Danny's roommate/lifelong best friend, she *should* remember his name. Or, continue to call him Hat Guy ironically.

Getting the idea that Joyce thinks Dorothy is too good for her. Self loathing seems like a Secret Joyce Trait that she doesn't often share and that she was lying at the bar about sharing everything she already kinda proved it with the whole access level joke. She had to basically be directly pushed into pursuing Jacob which was spelt out loud in the comic as mirroring her relationship with Dorothy. Dorothy is this precious piece of heaven that fell out of the sky and right onto her lap one day and i think she's always just been happy taking the little bit she can get from her and savoring it. I absolutely cannot wait to see how Joyce unpacks the fact she's caused her so much pain unintentionally.
