i adore Joyce echoing the things they've said to each other through the past few storylines. "Then I guess I'll get hurt" from when they were outside Hooch Place. "I can't leave you if I stay" echoing what Dorothy said when they had Kraft Dinner together. "Let's become criminals" once again echoing Dorothy, this time from when she convinced her to go out for #DRANKS. it hits very hard and is also yet more proof of how ABSOLUTELY OBSESSED Joyce is with Dorothy, because remembering every little exchange they've had thoroughly enough to quote them back at her in the heat of a riot cop clusterfuck is an *insane* level of dedication.

She has stopped trying to evacuate, and is holding her sign once more. BTW, does anybody have the pointer to the previous reference to the passage in the Book of Ruth? I don't think it was actually quoted, just referred to by Dorothy as something that Joyce might not know is often used at lesbian weddings. Callbacks are often highly resonant in this comic, and I'd like to recapture the whole context for better understanding.

i think part of why i'm excited for the way things playing out the way they are is because i love what's been done with Joe and Joyce, and i think the resulting turmoil between them from this is going to be really interesting no matter what happens. if they manage to hold strong and see how they can make things work, that'll be a good story with lots of different and interesting directions it can take. if the hurt is too strong from this and they break up, that'll also be a good story with lots of different and interesting directions it can take. there's so many possibilities this impulsive, hormonal mistake can create that i'll be shocked if the story ends up being unsatisfying.

it's definitely a Your Mileage May Vary thing, but i absolutely adore the tonal dissonance of the tear gas from this protest-gone-sideways creating romantic pink clouds for (what is seemingly about to be) Joyce and Dorothy's romantic culmination. it's definitely really stupid of them to make themselves the main characters of this protest by having their moment right here, but for me it's hitting just the right balance of Fucked Up and Beautiful.

This is a known trait of many neurodivergent people, and it does not (necessarily) make them spoiled. Sometimes, while this trait leads to incredibly passionate characters like Joyce doing large heroic gestures fueled by empathy that readers generally approve of, it can ALSO lead to people feeling and expressing things that look selfish and out of touch to someone not inhabiting their brain. And I think that's what's happening here with Dorothy. Dorothy pulled a hell of a place to have this breakdown LOL, but this is exactly the kind of mental wall a lot of high achieving kids crash into during college. Even if their academics don't tank on paper, their worldview may not survive. And, yes, this can be traumatic! The foundation of a lot of who we are is built during our childhood, so of course learning much of it was misleading (if not an outright LIE) is horrifying. It's basically the secular and more overtly political version of what Joyce is going through: a loss of faith.
