YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE CRAZY TO WORK HERE, BUT IT HELPS

ScrimpArt

this is off topic but whats the deciding factor behind a character having sclera or not?

Girlycore

I would like to hug the Asma please. 💕

C.T. Phipps

I hadn't thought about how it must feel to say that your university is engaged in genocide against possibly your own people (Asma could be Bulmerian) and then have to go back to work for it. Also, I predict that Walky will come in the next panel and say something stupid.

el

I wonder if she's specifically looking at the wire cutters because she's worried about something-- the fact that she has to use them, or the fact that she only didn't because Amazi-Girl showed up... The same Amazi-Girl who went back to fight more cops with guns. Or, simply existential dread!

Shane Wegner

Yup, we live in a world where your deeply felt causes aren't a priority at all to some people. It do be like that sometimes.

C

Definitely hitting the deep emotions when you have to work at a place you have to protest on moral grounds,

Ragtime

huh, Dina has em Jason doesn't(confirmed he has grey eyes) Dorothy has had them in the past in certain scenes when her glasses were off, Jennifer has them and Ruth didn't until Jennifer noticed their colour. Joyce her sister and her father have them, her mother and brothers do not. Perhaps............it is random or specific to character?

Shane Wegner

And armored guards are actively working against you to protect someone else's interests.

William Lewis

A year later? she's more worried about ICE.

Shane Wegner

Probably to get through the fence if need be. No need this time since AG grappled a section over.

Harold

Who else wants to see Asma added to the main cast list? This marks her 25th appearance, which is currently four more than Tony, who (along with Jocelyne, Charlie, and Alice) has been added recently.

Girlycore

Oooh, Willis is this strip hot off the presses (i.e. one of the ones you went back to add when you realized how little of her we see)?

Heatth

This is still the same day right? So she had a shift immediately after the protest.

Harold

@C.T. Phipps: Reminder that Bulmeria is the *perpetrator* of the genocide being protested, not the target.

Heatth

I was going to comment that. Didn't Willis say she was only showing up one year from now? So I guess he is editing the buffer.

Tim W

Huh, I guess Asma must listen to a lot of Behind the Bastards...

Girlycore

I really appreciate this! Thank you for being awesome and taking reasonable critique as an excuse to look at your work and add in extra rep for people who don't get much. 💕🔥

Fart Captor

Oh boy now to continue working and studying and living like this is all normal and this country isn't a horror show

Heatth

I definitively want that but, to be fair, there is a clear difference. Most of those appearances she is a background character with no speech line. And even now she is not really connected to any of the main cast. She is a recurring extra, not a member of the cast. It is the same reason Sierra is not there, despite having even more appearances. But, really, she should absolutely be a member of the cast. I want to see her involved with Dorothy's activist arc, I want her to have her own stories, I want her to actually interact with the cast in a meaningful way. But, for now, I understand why she isn't in the cast list.

Sajuuk-Khar

I like to imagine some illustrious front desk veteran has that particular Garfield poster at like, eye level on the other side of the front desk and today Asma can’t even look at it. Not today, orange Satan.

Megh

Out of curiosity when you say "displaced" do you mean the whole buffer basically got pushed back a day? Or that the strip that would have originally run today got the axe to make room for this one?

David M Willis

About 13 strips got pushed back a day. The one I yanked out might be a bonus strip, might not. Haven't decided.

5099 5618 v2.0

Gotcha. Thanks. Wanted to make sure it was what I thought it was. ...we don't know how long after the last few strips this was, do we?

Harold

But Joyce definitely also has Dot Eyes, amirite

Railway Series Book Club

"welp, time to get back to work at this institution that set riot cops and snipers upon me because they care more about money than principles!" thank you for retconning more asma into this storyline, she is the best

Morgan Byrd

Holy shit those flush nips are HUMONGOUS

GundamBradley

Ah, did she happen to snip any fences? Either way, god, I do not envy the anxiety attack she's likely dealing with.

Megh

@Harold: Genuinely annoyed how much I laughed at that Which was a lot to be clear...

Joey245

"That could have gone a lot better or a lot worse, and I don't know which outcome would have been scarier." Poor girl :(

George Simpson

Maybe short for "flush nippers". I would have called them "wire cutters", but maybe it's a regional thing?

MrShoggoth

I call them "clippers", cause they look exactly like a pair of hobby clippers I used to own, albeit much oversized compared to mine.

Rob McBobson

To me, it looks as if she's looking straight ahead of her, to the right (our left) of them.

Rob McBobson

I'd be perfectly happy to get it as a bonus strip!

Albi

"back to work"

Albi

"back to work" ... yeah, I feel this all too well.

Justin Wells

The first “real” protest I went to (one where the cops did not like what we were doing) I remember coming back home with yellow and black hands, face, and clothes because of the tear gas. We passed by rows of swat officers stationed a few blocks down the street just out of view of everyone at the protest (which got called a riot so they could use the tear gas on us), some plain clothes guys with guns (who were white and the cops didn’t stop), and the remains of burning police cars (which I do not remember any of us setting fire to and likely were set on fire by the cops themselves) as we walked away from the melee. It was the George Floyd uprisings in 2020 and when I got into work on Monday I remember feeling a lot like Asma is here. Harrowed and offset by what I had seen, having to pretend like what I was just a part of was normal and I’m not supposed to be shaken or rattled by anything that the state did to prevent us from saying “maybe the police shouldn’t kill people or use violence” while some of my coworkers made jokes about the protesters and that we didn’t know what we were doing. All this to say, this is a good representation of what that first protest feels like, good job Willis

Ray Fay

Wait, how would her being in it be a retcon? Hasn’t she been in it since the first time we saw the pic of Jocelyne at the protest?

Ray Fay

The way it’s been discussed, it seems like Bulmeria is committing a genocide against its own people, likely a specific ethnic group. Probably like Bosnian genocide.

Harold

@Ray Fay: This particular strip is a "retcon" - Willis confirms in another thread here that this one was added into the buffer after the fact, to give Asma more screen time.

Rob McBobson

I think it's still not a retcon, technically, since retcon is when you change in-universe facts after a while. Like, in one comic Supergirl might be sitting in a café in Phoenix, and in one comic made decades later the new writer decides that this was actually a Supergirl cosplayer and the real Supergirl was in Mozambique at the time. This is just improving the comic before it comes out.

Tim Starliper

Flush nippers, or cutters are different from a standard pair of wire cutters (often referred to as Dikes - short for Diagonal Cutters). If you look at the cutting edge, you will find flush cutters have a flat side and a tapered side. Placing the flat side against material from which the wire is protruding results in a (mostly) flat - or flush - cut. Diagonal Cutters have both sides of the cutting edge tapered, with the edges of the tapers meeting in the middle. These leave a cut that looks like the wire was pinched off (which it more or less was) and will leave more wire protruding, and often the cut end of the wire will have a sharp edge. This can be very undesirable in some situations - especially when dealing with high frequencies because those stubs with their sharp edges make great antennas.

Graham Jonaitis

I had interpreted this as Asma using the bolt cutters (or flush nippers elsewhere in this comment section) to snip apart the chain link and then AG grappling them down after it was cut free. Either way, she escaped from a physical cage only to still be in an ethical one.
