Andrea Andrew

Aw, Charlie truly understands Carla.

C

Having the only people who fought and supported you during the hardest times of your life also be involved in some bad stuff...that's gotta be rough.

Lisa

I don't think I've ever seen Carla be this vulnerable before, with anyone.

Corronchilejano

Who is this person in the room with Carla?

Justin Seifert

Love it when Charlie is a lot more present and lucid.

Fart Captor

Their daughter is perfect and has never done anything wrong in her life so they should do anything she wants or else they're terrible parents 😤

Populuxe

I finally believe Charlie and Booster are siblings.

Maude Reads Things

Yeah it should and hopefully it will. I can understand Carla's hesitance to criticize how they make the money they use to change laws to protect her but it's clear this is bothering her and it might be worth at least talking to them about.

Dan Rabin

Charlie maintains her pose and expression, only closing her lips slightly. Carla's head-tilt, mouth, and eyes are quite mobile, returning to upright head, closed and slightly frowny mouth, and converging front-looking eyes as Charlie's suggestion sinks in. Carla's up-and-left gaze in panel 4 is a classic indicator of looking outside the present situation—in this case, imagining a hypothetical scene between her and her parents. Charlie astutely works with that to get Carla to envision and adopt a different hypothetical.

Dan Rabin

Carla's change arc launched when she became attracted to Charlie, and got further impetus when Booster asked Carla to treat their sister with patience and understanding as a condition of their support for the relationship.

Gale Tazzin

hell yeah autism solves everything

Lazuli

whatre you gonna do, carla

Kelly (they-them)

Damn. Charlie's talking like she's a character in Smarting of Age

Grace Serenity

Did Charlie and Booster switch places? Cause she's reading Carla like a book!

Jeremy AR

Awww Carla 🥺. Charlie is a lot more insightful that people give her credit for.

GundamBradley

I really appreciate Charlie's way of saying this, and that she's not dismissing why Carla feels this way and is defensive of her parents, but still being firm that she *should* be able to talk to her parents about this.

C Bonesmith

I love that Carla is letting herself be vulnerable here. It's got to feel good, being able to trust someone like that. We know she's been a public figure- how much of her loudness and boldness did she feel forced to develop for her own safety? How long has it been since she could let her guard down? I've always been a big Carla fan and this feels like the start of something really good and cathartic for her, which is always a good thing to see happen for your fave.

Ria

I'm so thrilled at this Carla growth, and this Charlie intervention 🥹 After the huge injection of high-concentrate Sickopamine™ earlier this week, it's very soothing to have this gentle flow of Healthy Relationship Serotonin© as I'm coming down 😌

Megh

Pretty sure that's illegal. She's gonna get herself in trouble if she's keeps it up

Grace Serenity

Charlie just operates on a different timescale than the rest of us. She's got plenty of smarts!

Grace Serenity

That's why she's usually quiet! She knows she's too smart for the comic, so she keeps it on the DL

Jesse

Charlie was iguana on head all along.

Sajuuk-Khar

Awww, yeah, this is the good silent emotional agony stuff

Crunchos cereal

Carla probably starts the path on realizing it’s not possible to be as rich as her parents without doing or making people do pretty horrible stuff. There are shades of gray here, but verging on the black side.

Girlycore

This is true and you should say it more.

Kelly (they-them)

She's Charlie. She and Carla started dating recently. They met in a Gender Studies class they're both taking. Charlie is introduced after the time skip and has gained a bigger (but not huge) role in the last few storylines. It occurred to me that maybe you're being sarcastic or making a joke. I'm leaving this reply anyway

Terra Bruder

Also such a great indictment of neoliberals. If you're only fighting for your own kid, you're not fighting for kids.

Lyman Green

Well. How can I continue to dislike Carla after this? I can’t. Growth! Yes!

Uniquitous

Thank Cheese she can finally just be real for a minute.

Ouri Maler

It was either that or talk about her favorite cartoon (which also relates to her shockingly good relationship with her parents).

Joey245

I was already sold on Charlie/Carla long ago, but this? This cements their relationship in my eyes as something as special as Dina and Becky.

Astariel

Yeah, but to some extent, results matter more than intentions. If I'm a trans kid in Indiana, I don't care why the Ruttens got that law overturned, I'm just glad they did.

taekwondogirl

I think this is really short-sighted. Fighting for a cause only because it affects you personally is a pretty across the entire political spectrum thing. There will be specific issues that someone might care more broadly, and I think overall there is a greater tendency the more left you to to be more altruistic with the causes you support. But I guarantee a LOT of leftists don't even think about disability access and support.

Shane Wegner

I always appreciate nuanced views and grey areas. I’d find it delicious if Carla actually talked with her parents and they said they’re actually aware of the concerns, have done the ethical calculus and concluded their various choices added up to a net good. Most people like missiles when they’re Patriots rising up to defend the children’s hospitals in Kyiv, most people loathe them when they’re descending on civilians, and fair enough in both cases. But it’s a long, complex process getting into how military procurement, manufacturing, diplomacy, then deployment and targeting work. USA has ample laws of war and who we sell arms to. Sometimes we sanction someone, sometimes we cut someone off entirely, sometimes we don’t because some kind of politics are in play even when civilians are killed with weapons we sold. Is Ruttech selling Babykiller 5000 baby-seeking missiles, or some kind of high precision GPS that’s useful in a lot of different things, and the US government bought some and put it in Hellfires they then sold to Bulmeria? We don’t know. Maybe the Bulmerian regime the US sold whatever to was reasonable, then they voted in a much more hostile regime that started deporting people, deploying armed troops against their own cities and creating internment camps. If something like that happens, what does Ruttech do- lodge a letter of protest with Bulmerian or the US government? Stop making GPS processors? I consider the idea that Carla’s parents have never heard of the notion that genocide is wrong, and need to have an eye-opening conversation with their daughter to learn this wisdom, silly though. I agree with Charlie that Carla shouldn’t be afraid of the conversation, if anything she might learn a lot about the choices that were made and why.

CakeMageMaeve

I think Booster would have been meaner and smugger about it. I mean, I don't think it'd necessarily be on purpose, but I do think that Booster's so addicted to being right about people and especially being SEEN as being right about people that they don't always realize how judgy and mean-spirited their comments tend to come across. But yeah, Charlie's clearly at least as smart and insightful as Booster, but thankfully she seems to lack their need to always be the smartest person in the room.

Uniquitous

That's no better than anyone else taking refuge in their privilege while others suffer. Like, yes you have to survive before all else, but let's not make a virtue of it

Corronchilejano

Yes, it was sarcasm. Charlie had never locked in so hard.

Samantha Becker

If I had a nickel for every time one of my favorite comic artists did a plotline about a rich girl standing up to her tech giant parents for their poor business practices, I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice

Preventer Wind

This is the strip Charlie became a character for me and not just a curiosity.
