crossing fingers harder and harder and harder!!!!!

oops crossed them too hard

those of you with slipshine memberships, start shift+F5ing

Minzoku Bokumetsu

thought that was coming (as will Joyce lolololol)

ArdieBea

Ok. NOW it's happening.

Kazo

Ah crap, have I finally reached that point?

C

...Sorry Joe, I like you as a character, but this is my decade+ long ship setting sail. Wins like this over that long are rare.

LupinThe8th

Sarah may be sorry, but Joyce sure isn't.

Kelly (they-them)

Damn! I think this is the most risqué thing we've seen in the main comic - correct me if I'm wrong

Ragtime

Hey hate-sink, wanna determine the rate of workouts to cope?

Kelly (they-them)

Joyce's underpants are a modified version of the bisexual pride flag

KittyKai

I do have to admit, as much as I love Joyce and Dorthy, I do feel really bad for Joe- *slipshine announcement* WHAT THE F!@# IS A JOE-

5099 5618 v2.0

Re: Joe Fingers crossed that the conversation they eventually have is a productive one. Re: Slipshine Yes, good, thank you.

HenryVolt

You did your best Joe.

Astariel

I honestly do feel bad for Joe, but goddamn that last panel is hot!

Smoochie

Redemption does not equal victory. A harsh lesson if ever.

Fart Captor

I think maybe they're gonna fuck

David M Willis

slipshine brad is currently uploading the pages, so they should be up shortly

AE Gonzalez

Ding-dong Bandit callback.

wyatt

this strip finally sold me on exactly how in character his reaction is for joe - i’m excited to read this all back once the story progresses a bit

5099 5618 v2.0

(unrelated: are thumbs in the right places in that last panel, or am I just up too late?)

Harold

@Kelly (they-them): Not that it's going to matter soon. ("To shreds, you say?")

5099 5618 v2.0

@Kelly (they-them) That's probably character development, right?

Waifu Purplebutt

GOD DAMN IT WHY DOES HE HAVE TO MAKE THESE AS SLIPSHINE EXLUSIVE LET ME JUST BUY THE PORNOGRAPHIQUES DIRECTLY

5099 5618 v2.0

@Kelly (they-them) Oh, that's a tough call, especially given the Ruth/Billie years

I Know Why the Mowed Lawn Screams

the implication that Joe's been waiting in his room the entire time waiting for Joyce to come back is so funny to me. It's like he's a sad little unwanted mangy dog who was left all alone on his birthday.

Harold

@Minzoku Bokumetsu: Soon to be followed by Dorothy, I presume.

tifani

You bring Joe back finally then drop the Dojo slipshine? Willis you are a fucking sadist. Mad respect. I hate you.

William Lewis

Yeah, I can feel some sympathy for Joe but damn it Willis, I have to rework my budget for Friday payday now! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Maybeeus

On APRIL 1 2017 something very, very, interesting was added to the slipshine via Enter The Fuckzone. A noncanon page... Willis has spoken on this being planned for a quite long time... But what i really want to ask, was it planned even by then?

tifani

(Affectionate)

Sajuuk-Khar

Just to be clear, Willis, the slipshine is for Roadblock and Ethan, right The Dorothy thing is just cover art Right

Logibear

Awwww Joe. Proud of you for being vulnerable and leading with your heart, for where you were at the beginning of the series it's super impressive where you are. Buuuut... Sickos win. Flawless Victory.

tifani

If I wasn’t 90% sure this is going to end in polyamory I would hunt you for sport.

Logibear

(Still holding out for potential Poly exploration because that might be fun though)

Grace Serenity

Nah, they’re just gals being pals!

AE Gonzalez

If Joyce returns the favor, she will have done the Bi-fecta. Put her mouth on a weenus, and a vaj within 24 hours.

Edwin I Callahan

I guess I still would have stuck with Joe/Joyce if I was the author here, but I’m not. Anyway, Willis has been writing the Joyce/Dorothy romance really well, so as a reader I’ll go with Willis’ storyline.

Dan Rabin

Acknowledging the last panel as giving Sarah's take as having an objective basis, I can put it aside and analyze this as a Sarah strip. Joe's take hasn't changed: he has behaved properly as someone who loves Joyce; he has explicitly left the door open to a three-person arrangement. He *has* set Joyce free, knowing the possibilities. Sarah, however, has not only noted that it's new for her to feel sorry for Joe in her last appearance, but has actively sought out Joe to console him. It is indeed new for her to treat Joe like a friend. We've already seen a long, gentle story thread I call "The Softening of Sal"—forgiving Amber, dropping the aloofness, putting the motorcycle in storage, joining the roller derby team, embracing a musical-performance major, and taking up with Danny in her first real relationship. I propose that a Softening of Sarah has definitely launched, and her serendipitous pairing with Tony is just part of it. Several factors—notably Raidah's function as a nemesis and Sarah's much closer relationship with Joyce—make this a different story, a distinction Sarah richly deserves. The sexy panel is nice, too: Dorothy probably scanned her notes carefully and concluded that, while undressing *her* is *Joyce's* job, nothing precludes *her* undressing *Joyce*. An eagle-eye for fine print will stand her in good stead professionally.

GundamBradley

I mean, it's been like a day. But, it's DoA, so if he does ever get her back, it'll be like 7 years from now. We'll see, I guess.

Shane Wegner

If Joyce is gonna drop Joe that easily, maybe he should move on. “Joe makes me feel like the most special person in the world! …I should dump him.”

Rob McBobson

SARAH: "Aaaaand I think somebody is soon going to be hunting a cartoonist for sport."

5099 5618 v2.0

@Fart Captor Nah, they're just pals. They're actually having a very intense discussion about the third season of Dexter and Monkey Master. Stakes are high, which is why the door had to be locked and the lights turned off.

Grace Serenity

No, those look like they’re backwards

tifani

Okay this actually does fully confirm to me this ends in polyamory. Willis is a tease but he’s not cruel. Joe has done nothing narratively to deserve being treated like this and this is only okay if in the end Joe gets what he wants. So calling it now: post Dojo sex Joyce drops the poly bomb.

tifani

Tick tock.

5099 5618 v2.0

@Tifani Reminds me of Season 2 of Severance, that. "She was never cruel." (Also, welcome back! You were away for a bit, right?)

tifani

And yeah that’s right I am taking the Dojo slipshine and making it somehow about Joe: Die mad about it haters.

ArdieBea

*Next Strip* Joe: Yeah - it's what my mom used to say... Sarah: Fuck that shit! (pause) You know that she loved you even if she doesn't come back, right? Right?! Joe: But if... Sarah: Joseph Fucking Rosenthal! If you go all mopey on us I WILL go get the bat! Joe....: Joe: You know, I have access to a sex swing...

Rob McBobson

Up too late, friend. The hand with the fitness tracker is Dorothy's right hand, and it's holding Joyce's left hand.

Grace Serenity

Ethan has Asher, he doesn’t need a hallucination anymore!

MrShoggoth

It hurts when you realise the person you like doesn’t like you back to the same extent, or degree. I hope Joe’s not in a mentality of punishing himself with this realisation.

tifani

Yep it was a necessary break! I fully plotted a whole novel while trying to make a dnd campaign. Hyper focus is a hell of a drug and Joe coming back the second I stopped being in research mode for the first time in 48 hours feels like my karmic reward.

Grace Serenity

Given some of the things Willis has posted on tumblr about Joyce and Dorothy, with receipts from a decade ago, that is plausible!

5099 5618 v2.0

@Rob McBobson Mrs. 5099 and I thought that's what it was, too. Then we physically got into that position, and it didn't quite match up. My point is I may be hallucinating, but I'm having a pretty good night.

Rob McBobson

To slightly misquote the song lyrics I read as a child: "It hurts when our loved ones are not in our lives! It hurts like a storeful of marzipan knives!"

Smoochie

Jurassic Bongo

Gale Tazzin

you'd think that, but a) sometimes bad things happen to undeserving characters in the narrative (Ethan, Dina, Walky, and Billie are all good immediate examples) and b) there's no reason to believe *Dorothy* would want to be in a polycule with Joe, even if he and Joyce are both on board, and Joyce dodged a question about dumping him. so Dorothy might give Joyce an ultimatum

5099 5618 v2.0

@Maybeeus I asked about whether that was canon, once. The response was "if it is, Danny and Joe better watch out." So, BOLO, I guess.

tifani

Look idk what to tell you. I majored in English and I read a lot of books and I’ve seen a lot of movies and my brain is kind of wired for this and everything in my bones about how to tell a good story tells me narratively this ends in polyamory. I fully predicted the severance season 2 finale if you want my credentials.

Kelly (they-them)

When did Joyce have time to buy bisexual pride panties? She's known she was bi for like, a day. And it's been a very busy day (in more ways than one~)

Empress of Robots

ALSO: Far be it from me to ship cisheteros, but is anyone else starting to get a Sarah X Joe vibe?

Rob McBobson

Well, I've got nobody to get into that position with at the moment, so all I can say is that going by the clothes and the thumb positions it's gotta be Dorothy's right and Joyce's left. "IMO," as you youngsters like to put it.

Empress of Robots

*making an assumption about Joe and Sarah for the sake of the Joke

5099 5618 v2.0

@Tifani Like how you can tell how a song will likely end once you hear the first half, right?

Rob McBobson

(Also, you got into THAT position with Mrs. 5099 and then went back to TYPING? Not to be vulgar, but I think she's feeling a bit disappointed, ohoho...)

Quantum

Not me frantically trying to remember my slipshine credentials, no no

5099 5618 v2.0

@Rob McBobson "Young"? Been a while since someone made me blush, in here ;) (/j)

DiDi-chan

AUGH! Slipshine, Nooooooo! MY EYES!!! I'm going to go check Ao3 to see if anyone has ever done any fanfiction of this. Because if they haven't, I just might be the first. Yes, I am wanting Joe to jump into a new relationship as soon as possible, why do you ask?

5099 5618 v2.0

@Kelly (they-them) Maybe she got them around when Becky and Dina hooked up, or they were gifts? Or maybe this kind of thing has been on her mind for a while and she just hadnt allowed herself to acknowledge it until (/checks Slipshine) ...now.

Rob McBobson

Hey, everyone, I'm saying this in advance, please don't reveal anything about the Severance season 2 finale, please, a quote out of context is one thing but actual plot details is another

ArdieBea

No problem with poly developments BUT I hope that if Joyce doesn't opt to go down that route (and I'm calling it as a no because while I'm sure she'd like to, I'm also sure Dorothy wouldn't and I think Joyce will prioritise Dorothy's feelings) Joe doesn't get stuck in a 'it was all a lie' sort of self-hatred.

DiDi-chan

I could see it. But sadly, it's not in the cards lest Sarah be a hypocrite. What with Tony in her world now.

5099 5618 v2.0

@Rob McBobson Nah, she's hammering nails into the paper-towel holder that normally sits over the sink in the kitchen. ADHD has its demands, after all. (It's cool, tho. I know where she sleeps. And she knows I'm always on here at this time of night, anyway)

tifani

My point is for weeks months years centuries we have seen Dorothy and Joyce divide the entire fandom through their out of sync behavior to the core dna of the whole story whether you like the pairing or not. Willis decided to go into this with an infidelity storyline something he was vocally reluctant to do because he likely saw what it did to his comments section coming. He kept Joe out of the story for weeks punishing the character and fans of the character and fans of the Joe/Joyce relationship through the absence of a plot he spent significant time building (the Joe Joyce relationship). He let Dorothy and Joyce happen because it felt right organically but you can’t tell me he suddenly stopped being interested in writing Joyce/Joe. And you don’t toss in the last conversation Joe and Joyce had out at random. You don’t take the time to establish sexual and romantic interest in both (it’s not about who she loves more I am speaking strictly on established sexual desire). You do not establish attraction based on scent to both. You also do not have Joe be the one to set Dorothy and Joyce into motion if there is no narrative reward for that sacrifice. This ends in poly.

MrShoggoth

“If it takes forever, I will wait for you…”

5099 5618 v2.0

@DIDI-chan I will be very surprised if AO3 has no fic of these two.

Rob McBobson

And just when I'm here, pondering Sarah's words, a Karen Mok song comes on from my speakers. "Just Say Goodbye". Et tu, Karen? T_T

Ilana Feldman

They have had 0 romantic chemistry ever despite knowing each other since book 1, Sarah's just started dating someone, and Joe is at least hung up on Joyce, so no, not really.

Doki

Oh shit! I told myself a long time ago whenever Joyce's first time was posted, I'd resubscribe to Slipshine. WELP. TIME TO GO GRAB MY WALLET. (Although, as we all know, she has obviously already had lesbian sex with Joe.)

Doki

Also LMAO at the title, it's PERFECT.

Rob McBobson

"be dicks"? Honest question: How was I being a dick?

Empress of Robots

I dunno. I'm skeptical of Tony as a person. SEEMS nice. But he's the son of the dean and on a college football team and a cis guy which (when taken together)...tend to not produce the GREATEST people in real life

tifani

@rob Oh no man I meant anyone who would spoil not you, I edited the comment to clarify then deleted it, Sorry. Basically I meant hey to anyone who has seen the season 2 severance finale do not be a dick and use my bragging as an excuse to spoil . I was agreeing with you.

Empress of Robots

(Alternatively, Sarah could dump that Short King in favor Joe. There's nothing morally grey about that that at all.)

Rob McBobson

@Tifani: Ah, okay. Thank you for explaining!

5099 5618 v2.0

Mrs. 5099 reports the body of work on AO3 is a lot of Amber/Amazi-Girl, Joyce/Joe, Sal/Marcie, and that there's an interesting AU where Marcie and Sal get adopted by Leslie.

tifani

I admit the sentence was poorly worded.

Empress of Robots

"Ethan. It'd be a shame, if we didn't make the porn Hall of Fame!" ~Roadblock (probably)

Templeton

Inb4 Joe transfers out of IU because he just can't stand losing Joyce. He'll do everything he can to stay within her orbit, but it starts to hurt too much and he leaves...

5099 5618 v2.0

Also that there's one that's "Joyce/Dorothy/Joe, also Walky is there", and that people have been writing Joyce/Dorothy since about 2019. So, about what you'd expect

tifani

Yeah it’s almost like that outcome would make no logical story sense and is therefore extremely unlikely….possibly. Who can say? (I say.)

tifani

@gale Yeah but counterpoint: I feel the poly in me bones.

tifani

We shall see but I’m not signing up for target practice

5099 5618 v2.0

Update: after checking the Slipshine, I think I have a better idea about the thumbs thing. So, no No-Prize for me. Oops!

SmartAlec105

Tifani, one thing to keep in mind is that this direction of Joyce and Dorothy was not originally planned. So I don't think that stuff like "how to tell a good story tells me narratively" is necessarily applicable. Authors can go for "realistic but makes for a poor narrative" directions in a story (which I'm not necessarily saying is a bad thing to do). But feeling it in ye bones? Now that's a solid argument.

tifani

If I’m right do I usurp Harold btw?

tifani

I will NOT use my powers for good.

SmartAlec105

I don't think poly is gonna happen. It looks like it's going the way of Joe unhealthily clinging on to the possibility of holding on to any part of his first real relationship.

tifani

ME BONES THEY TINGLE

Kelly (they-them)

Joe is right about Joyce's jugs - not her shower jugs, the other ones

tifani

Welp going back into lurker mode unless something to gloat about happens soon so ttfn 💋

Tessea

I was never really a fan of Joe. But I can't honestly say he hasn't improved _a lot_. And Joyce, despite all the distractions, really REALLY needs to talk to him before the end of Sunday. One way or another he doesn't deserve to wait much longer.

5099 5618 v2.0

@Tifani (/Starts the stopwatch) What's your preferred snack? I'll be sure to have some in the cupboard for your return.

5099 5618 v2.0

@Kelly (they-them) The jugs are memorable, it's true.

Kelly (they-them)

@Tifani I like how you list predicting Severance season 2 as one of your credentials. Like, you have a resume to summarize your long history of Calling It

5099 5618 v2.0

@Tifani I mean, you could just be a different Oracle. Like, the Oracle at Delphi wasn't the only Oracle, for instance.

Empress of Robots

There's a lesson here. If you tease someone that they're a lesbian when she's 15, there's a nonzero chance she will come back in 4ish years and fuck your girlfriend right out from under you.

Kelly (they-them)

The Roadblock/Ethan slipshine would be Roadblock insulting Ethan in rhyme as Ethan climaxes and splooges all over the poster

Dahlia Rose

Welp, sitting here as someone who just spent 25 dollars they can't really afford to spend on a slipshine membership just to read this one story. Will my wallet cry? Yes. Do I regret it? NO. That was the best slipshine yet holy fuck <3

Empress of Robots

YES, I know Joe pushed Dorothy to admit her feelings for Joyce, Joyce and Joe are mostly broken up (unless Joe continues as Joyce's poly sidepiece tbd), and Joe fully knows and endorses Joyce doing everything with Dorothy. But that doesn't make what I said less funny or true lol.

Empress of Robots

Also the "D" in TBD stands for both "Determined" and "Dorothy-ed" because let's be honest Joe is not getting his place as Joyce's sidepiece unless Joyce gets enthusiastic support from her wife

Dahlia Rose

For real though. I joined to read it, but spending 24.95 when I don't care about anything else on the site really sucks...

Logibear

Do plot relevant things often happen in the Slipshine? Or is it just "plot"?

Logibear

I dunno. Going from "he makes me feel like the most important person in the world" to whatever is going on here makes me feel like it's a bit more than just "oh well, I'm done with you now but bye"

Elizabeth

Happy slipshine day to those who celebrate (and subscribe), this is the first one that’s got me strongly considering it

Rob McBobson

I was wondering the same thing. If there are actual plot developments, I might spend the money. If there aren't, I might spend it later, instead.

Kelly (they-them)

Nah, it's just love-y, sexy stuff. Edit: It's also funny and embellishes on things we pretty much already knew. I don't think Willis would ever put anything critical to the story behind a paywall. The first slipshine (Walky performs a Sex) revealed early that Dina and Amber share a half bath with Dotty's room, but that's it

tifani

Salt and vinegar chips. Feels like that should surprise no one.

Bronxden

im not going to lie, at this point i think Joe is just made to suffer. I loved seeing his growth and hope he continue it because man he grew on me over the years with seeing his beginning and growth in becoming a better person.

tifani

Nah I’m pretty sure this works like Highlander rules.

DramaQueen

They are developing a friendship and that’s almost better.

Rob McBobson

Thanks, Kelly! In that case, I'll wait. No judgement, but personally, I never saw the appeal in watching other people have sex and not getting to join in. :)

5099 5618 v2.0

@Logibear They can. There was one involving Ruth and Billie in the shower that was really good at getting across how medication was affecting Ruth, how strong their bond was, and how afraid Ruth was of losing Billie, at the time. But yeah, it's mostly sexy stuff. Very well written, in- character [1] sexy stuff [1] - Usually.

tifani

If you’ve seen that finale does it not say it all though? If I wrote a resume on predictions it would just be that though. It’s the one I’m proudest of. Obviously.

Crunchos cereal

I’m still waiting for the Rachel shoe to drop.

Kelly (they-them)

I didn't know Joe's middle name was Fucking It doesn't surprise me, but it's not something that I knew

5099 5618 v2.0

@Tifani There sure were a lot of highlanders, tho. Unless the only media that counts is the first movie.

ArdieBea

After all these years I've taken the plunge - and am savouring it. Currently half-way through the back-log and there's some real gems in there; the 'fuckzone' Sal is just gorgeous (nb - no fucking in that particular pin-up) and the one where Grace and Amanda both clock Sierra made me laugh out loud. Also, Mike getting Billifer to acknowledge that she's fucking a woman... Priceless. I'll come back and edit this once I've got to the 'Friend of Dorothy', though... O.M.G. Ok, so... for that one Pornographique alone, it was worth every cent. That made me sob into my soup (just SOOoooo sweet!!) and then laugh and then laugh some more and O.M.G!!!!!!! dAMN YOU wILLIS. And thank you.

tifani

It’s an actual movie? I thought it was just a propaganda campaign for the most badass tagline of all time.😉

Rob McBobson

@5099 The first movie, and the animated show.

tifani

Look the point is if I’m right Harold and I have to fight to the death. We just do.

Kelly (they-them)

@80085 Ooh, now that you say that, I remember a different reveal from one of the Slipshines. Something that could have been intuited, but wasn't actually confirmed for a while afterwards

5099 5618 v2.0

@Rob McBobson ...animated? Man, I missed that one...

ArdieBea

Shouldn't it be Joe and the Sarah vibe? Or are we forgetting Other Jacob?

tifani

I get basically no real world opportunities to challenge someone I respect to a death match and I am taking this one if the opportunity presents itself.

Rob McBobson

@5099: It's underrated. I watched it as a child. Fun thing is, in my country's dub, they changed the name of the main villain, and called him "Kurgan", which of course has enormous implications on the lore.

Andrea Andrew

I’m sure, in time, Dorothy might accept him if Joyce still likes him

Populuxe

Took me FOREVER to restart my Slipshine membership. But it was worth it for Domme Joyce.

Astariel

Probably subconscious. As Becky said, her whole wardrobe's at least a little bicurious.

The Deliberate Myth

For how long has Joyce been wearing a vest with lesbian flag colors on it?

Kelly (they-them)

I haven't seen Severance at all, so sadly I can't appreciate how impressive that is

Empress of Robots

"Ethan do me good and proud. Fuck that Twink into the ground!" "Asher's not a twink he's more of a twunk." "Thanks? But who are you talking to Ethan?" "Stupid Roadblock"

Empress of Robots

*Reads Friend of Dorothy for the 7th time tonight* WELP. I hope Sarah doesn't need anything from her dorm room before...next weekend.

C.T. Phipps

Joe's making the right decision here. Not about the polyamory but about letting Joyce go. He should date someone else now.

ArdieBea

Ok, so Willis has never put a necessary plot point behind a paywall. And you can follow his storylines and character arcs with all the enjoyment without watching these dweebs go to town on one another (or themselves). But unholy hell, there are some fantastic character moments in there! The Billie/Ruth shower scene? Yes, sexy, but also adds some significant elements to the impact of Ruth's depression and its treatment on their relationship. Oh, and it's got a Joyce moment in there that tells us a bit about her journey, too (a moment we can appreciate more fully with today's slipshine!). The things that come out about what's important to Sal, and the self-image she's carrying in her head when she gets 'fast and impersonal' with Danny. That delightful moment with Sierra. The reality of what went down between Joe and Malaya and HOW THAT AFFECTED HIM! And today... Dorothy and Joyce say so much to each other as they work their way through their 'first time'. Oh - to put it into context against what I said yesterday re word-balloon count: I count eighty-five panels. Only sixteen are wordless (excluding panting, groaning, and those cute high-pitched noises you make when... you don't know? You..? sorry...) (but including names, panted, growled, groaned or whined). And by those criteria, there are 107 word-balloons (and one entire panel filled with a certain sound effect). Communication is key for this couple, and having read the slipshine, I will henceforth be reading them in the light of all that they've said to each other, tonight. No regrets.

ArdieBea

I think if he interprets her not coming back as 'she didn't love me' then he's creating a stick to beat himself with. Sadly.

ArdieBea

It's funny. I've always noted that while Joyce freely tells Dorothy she loves her (and Sarah, too), she's never said it to Joe. If you'd asked me before today, I'd have said, "Joyce loves Dorothy, not Joe." But now I want to argue that she DOES love Joe - just nowhere near as much as Dorothy. I'm also inclined to think that, now she's gone so far with Dorothy, she's much more likely to be able to tell him much more clearly how she does feel. It's probably still going to hurt him, but I think Joyce may have unlocked new levels of communication, tonight.

ArdieBea

A distinct possibility. He's grown and changed, and Dorothy insists on being fair where she can.

ArdieBea

So worth it! Mind you, I'm financially secure at the moment, and can afford to buy books at long last. And... comics. Yeah. Comics.

ArdieBea

I doubt very much that Joyce will be cold-hearted to Joe. My prediction is that WHEN she has that discussion with Dorothy, and comes back to Joe to say it's not going to be a thing, that it's pretty tearful.

Gale Tazzin

yes! i believe you! but for my own credentials: i'm a webcomic author myself, i edit friends' scripts for fun, and I've had multiple webcomic creators commend me for guessing plot twists early. though a lot of those comics were horror instead of slice-of-life, BUT all the negative repercussions readers have mused about Joyce x Dorothy seem to be coming true, so I don't think the ending will the happiest option for everyone involved. but i agree the polycule would indeed be the simplest option, if Dorothy can learn to share Joyce!

Corwin Haught

I guess it's now a universe where they realized their feelings earlier.

Anna K

Yeah, this is... a lot. I know some people enjoy the porny side of DoA, and more power to them, I'm glad they have the Slipshine so they can go read that. Personally, as a grey-ace in my mid-30s, I enjoy the romance but actively *do not want* to see teenagers fucking, and have previously been glad that all such activity is kept outside the main comic. This is close enough to "here, look at some teenagers fucking" that I'm uncomfortable reading it, and if it goes any further in the main comic then I'll probably check out for a while.

Rubia

*reads the Slipshine* Phew! I have to keep on googling Dorothy, as I'm always forgetting that she debuted in Joyce and Walky!. My first exposure to her was here, so my mental bias makes her out to be the OG version, even if that's not the case. I was already starting to ship her and Dorothy before I ever went back to reading J&W! (I think I reached a certain point, moved on to Shortpacked! and didn't return until I read comments for a DOA strip), so it could be a hard read at times. Made me want this to happen even more, so with apologies to Joe, I'm glad we're here. Hope he finds some happiness, through the poly route or otherwise.

joe mcguire

So, I might have missed it, but I don’t remember him sincerely bringing up polyamory? I’ve seen comments implying that he suggested it, but when did he? Are we putting words in his mouth or is there a strip I missed?

MrShoggoth

Feel free to adopt the term Polycule Peeps as a club name if you're proven correct!

The Deliberate Myth

I think Sarah is spot on - Joyce ain't coming back from this. Joyce is LITERALLY dressed as a lesbian flag (until y'know, she's not dressed). For those that have seen the slipshine... that first full page panel is nothing if not a declaration. This whole storyline has been a slow gradual coming out story, and I don't think Joyce will be romantically involved with a male character again.

The Deliberate Myth

Hey Tifani! For the sake of your enjoyment, I hope you are right. But I think Joyce is not going back to Joe - or any other male-presenting character - anytime soon. Joyce is literally dressed as a lesbian flag. But we will see - I have clearly been wrong before about a great number of things.

Madison

I really feel for Joe. It’s been really hard reading, as I’m a big Joe/Joyce fan ever since I read that one Its Walky! story where they go back to Joyce’s house 😭 sorry Joe, you deserve better

Maybeeus

GOD it did just hit me that both Joe and Walky each constantly teased Dorothy and Joyce respectively about being lesbians only for it both to come right back and hit them in the head karmically lmao.

Harold

@Empress of Robots: If the end of "FoD" is any indication, we may be getting a timeskip in the comic simply because of all the sex our heroines are going to be having for the foreseeable future.

The Deliberate Myth

Far be it from me to question the artist! The colors of her underwear looked more purple than blue on my screen, but you would know best what you were intending. I still think it's gonna be a looooong time before Joyce gets intimate with any of the male characters, but I have been wrong about a great number of things. Thanks for the enjoyable ride, regardless of where it goes.

Harold

@5099 5618: Coincidentally, I believe "What's Your Preferred Snack?" may be the title of the second Joyce and Dorothy Slipshine

Ilana Feldman

Honestly, until I looked a little closer I thought it was the trans flag lmao

Harold

@Tifani: I... I am both honored and somewhat terrified. Of course, HIGHLANDER also has the most badass sequel subtitle of all time (HIGHLANDER II: THE QUICKENING).

Harold

Don't worry, I'm sure Joe will meet someone who owns a nice big farm upstate soon-- OH GOD NO

tifani

Bisexual underwear huh WILLIS? Guess what assholes I’m that Charlie meme now fully and when I’m right you’ll see. YOU’LL ALL SEE. (Mad scientist laugh) throws a smoke bomb and disappears in a cloud of smoke the colors of the poly pride flag.

zee

God the fact that Joe's just been standing there waiting makes me so sad :( reminds me of a dog who's owner died I'm still 100% for the poly route, not because I think it'll work but because it's interesting. But God I hope he finds someone better after, my boy is platinum...

Andrea Andrew

I mean, regardless of Joyce’s openness to poly, Dorothy seems like her soulmate.

Smoochie

True, though Walky on reflection was aware to some degree that Joyce wanted to steal Dorothy away. … Even if Joyce wasn’t aware of it herself.

Kelly (they-them)

Joyce has already been intimate with Joe three times. Lord knows she wanted to be intimate with Ethan and Jacob

Kelly (they-them)

They'll have to stop fucking to get some mac and cheese with pepper and Sprite to wash it down at SOME point. Like, sure, pussy is delicious, but it's not very filling

Kelly (they-them)

@smoochie Oh, it dawned on that maybe Walky wasn't just being a dick to Joyce all those times. Maybe he was subconsciously feeling jealous or possessive

Kelly (they-them)

I definitely see where you're coming from. If it's any consolation, I can't imagine a more risqué scenario than this that isn't out right sex. And I would be *shocked* if Willis published something that porngraphic on the main site and for free

Harold

@Kelly (they-them): Joyce also needs to take her pill to pervent lesbean babby

tifani

Yeah this is why I said Joyce putting off the talk with him was a dick move. He’s heartbroken right now and he doesn’t have to be. He so easily did not have to be. Fuck anyone who comes at me to say it’s totally fine and dandy and Joyce owed him no consideration because she and Dorothy have the queer love of the ages or what the fuck ever. All that shit you guys have been trying not to keep in mind this is what was happening right in front of you. Every time Joyce dragged this out and chose her own wants over what she owed Joe this is what was happening. Joe in pain while Joyce does what she wants. This is us seeing it. And just because you like it and it feels good doesn’t make it fair.

5099 5618 v2.0

@Jasmijn Wellner Yeah. Fingers crossed, even now, but... Yeah...

tifani

And yeah life’s not fair and the universe is indifferent but people aren’t. And if you have the power to be kind or cruel you should choose to be kind. Cruelty doesn’t take effort. It takes exactly what Joyce is doing which is just being willfully blind to the pain of others. Kindness takes effort and usually it’s what Joyce works to be and hopefully who she’ll work to be again. In her post nut clarity.

Empress of Robots

Walky knew he never stood a chance as soon as Joyce realized she wasn't straight

@Harold Greek Chorus: AND SO, @Harold, BLESSED BY THE KINDLY ONES THAT SPIN, STRETCH, AND CUT THE STRANDS OF FATE DID SAY SOOTH. SICKOS, ECSTATIC AMIDST DIONYSIAN REVELRY ON BEHALF OF THE PROPHECIED MAIDENS, SAFE AT LAST BENEATH MIGHTY ARTEMIS' WATCHFUL GUARD, PAUSED TO TAKE NOTE AND MARK THIS NEW PROPHECY. THEIR CELEBRATIONS THEN RESUMED, THE GOD OF WINE HIMSELF SEEMING TO SMILE UPON THEM IN THIS LONG-FORETOLD MOMENT. BUT LO, A SOUND OF BEES COULD BE HEARD AT THE EDGE OF THE FEAST. SCHOLARS OF SWIFT HERMES RECOGNIZED THE SOUND OF THE DIVINE MESSENGER'S OWN PROPHETIC MEDIUM, LOW AND FAINT BUT SEEMING TO GATHER TOWARDS A SINGULAR MORTAL [1], THEIR FORM SHIELDED FROM VIEW. MERRY HERMES' GAMES ARE OFTEN OBSCURE TO MORTALS, BUT THOSE WHO KNOW HOW TO LISTEN CAN SOMETIMES HEAR WHEN A NEW ONE BEGINS . . . _____ [1] - It's @Tifani, in case that's not clear.

tifani

My point is basically this — cruelty doesn’t take effort, but kindness does. And Joyce has spent this arc choosing the easier path: avoiding pain, dodging hard talks, staying willfully blind to how her choices affect Joe (and Becky to a lesser extent). That’s not evil, it’s human — but it is selfish. The story’s been about her learning that love without empathy isn’t growth. And that’s why I think this ends in poly. Willis has built every thread — Joe’s patience, Dorothy’s clarity, Joyce’s confusion — around learning to love responsibly. Poly isn’t just a ship here; it’s the moral resolution that honors everyone’s arc without turning love into a zero-sum punishment. If this story’s about learning to choose kindness when it’s hard, then the kindest ending is one where no one has to lose to be seen. Mmmk?

Just want to note that there was one time before when Sarah said of Joyce that her smiles weren't coming back. That was, after all, her experience with her first room-mate. And as Dina noted, she was very wrong.

Yue Ryong

Speaking as someone who still is rooting for a triad, I am of a mind to caution everyone to remember that this is not a genre that really has 'endgame' ships in the way that It's Walky (Sci-Fi epic) & Shortpacked (workplace comedy/pop-culture commentary) do. No matter which ships win out in the short term, the very structure of an ongoing slice of life/coming of age series like this will inevitably mean that the common currency of shifting relationships will continue to rotate. They may cycle back around, but they cannot be held in amber (much as she might wish >.>) for the rest of the strips run. That said, I'm canvasing for Fuckpile 2044. Let them get ahead of the game on the 'disappear into the wilderness & form a commune' phase of the countercultural revolution. Joyce can be cult leader and be horrified when someone suggests that she has to form an actual Dogma.

The Deliberate Myth

@zee Take a look at that first full-page image, with Joyce's head near the top. Her flannel is the orange/pink, her t-shirt is white, and her underwear looked (when I first saw it) like the purple. Those colors in that sequence resembles the lesbian flag. Willis has said the underwear was more bisexual colors, so I was clearly off. Still...even if Joyce is going to ultimately identify as bi, she is definitely leaning lesbian at this point. She didn't tell her dad she was bi or pan or fluid... she said gay. And she keeps saying it with Dorothy. Thats why I drew the conclusion I did.

Sajuuk-Khar

I do have to disagree like hell with Sarah’s “stupid aphorism anyway” advice, like, I know you’re coming from a place of sympathy but very little would be worse than trying to control Joyce’s life or choices. Like, it’s just, generally. It is good to let her go, no matter if it’s because she’s coming back with Dotty also (I hope) or it’s over

Sajuuk-Khar

Not to mention Mikey Car Rides and Johnny Phone Calls

Sajuuk-Khar

I would like to mildly add that there is not a good reason to imagine Dorothy will absolutely totally refuse poly times w/Joe, either, unless Joyce keeps putting the conversation off into infinity or Dotty decides to just really dig in her heels and be petty in a way that doesn’t square with her character to me. But I have said this before, and like, shrugguy.jpg. It might not work out!

Sajuuk-Khar

Also Sarah and her “I don’t even know you anymore” should read It’s Walky and then thank her lucky stars this Joyce is nowhere near that destructive

Dahlia Rose

@Seth Yeah but I've already seen everything else last time I was subscribed. So all that's new is this one.

Empress of Robots

I am cautiously Team Fuckpile 2044. I am looking forward to the fight between Sal and Walky to determine who is allowed into the Fuckpile because (and I CANNOT stress this enough) IT CANNOT BE BOTH OF THEM!

Sajuuk-Khar

(Also that Dumbiverse Dorothy did not try to beat Walky to death on some country road)

Harold

@Empress of Robots: Couldn't they both be part of it, as long as they avoid contact with each other? (As in, if this was a list of AO3 tags, one would be "NO SAL/WALKY")

Harold

@Sajuuk-Khar: [re: your Dumbiverse Dorothy/Walky comment] Joyce: "No. That is MY job."

ArdieBea

@Tifani I want to respect your conclusions, but the path you're taking there feels full of potholes. I just don't think it's true that Joyce is avoiding pain, dodging hard talks, and staying willfully blind to how her choices affect others. She left Joe hanging in the first place because she was panicking about how she needed to prioritise talking with Becky - she wanted to have that hard talk, not avoid it! (and she was aware of leaving Joe hanging - hence the quick return to say, "I'll be back"). When Dorothy chickened out of checking up on Amber because Becky might be there, Joyce said, 'but we want to talk with Becky!' When Becky left the room, I think Joyce on her own would have followed her, but Dorothy's advice was to leave her - ostensibly to prevent more pain, but also, perhaps, Dorothy's just less concerned for Becky than Joyce. Joyce is not in any way willfully blind to how her actions will be felt by Becky. And in her approach to Joe that morning, she started off by acknowledging that she was a bumbling idiot - she knew she'd done him wrong - and Joe wasn't wrong to pull her up on the intentionality of her kissing Dorothy. Then, though she was initially blind-sided by Hank's appearance she managed to fumble her way through a bunch of unconvincing lies to protect Jocelyn, and then came out to her dad unnecessarily to give her cover. That's not 'avoiding pain and dodging hard talks.' It may not have been very correct given that she hadn't consulted Jocelyne first (not that there was time) but it wasn't choosing an easy path. I think it's true that she's avoiding talking with Joe and with Dorothy about Joe's offer. I think it likely that that possibility is a bit more than she can process at the moment, but not impossible for her to visualise and to want. But I do think it's completely consistent with her character to put that on the back-burner when her girlfriend is SO OBVIOUSLY horny for her (and vice versa) and they really, really just want to get an hour or two for themselves first. That's straightforward and obvious and it really is right in front of her face. Joe actually isn't. And that situation is very much ambiguous for Joyce and confusing and she needs time to process it. And I don't think that's unreasonably unkind. Certainly not a cruel thing to do. I don't think Joe will think so, either, despite how hurt he's feeling. And I don't think enjoying Joyrothy's enjoyment makes people here blind or insensitive to the other dynamics and tensions.

Ilana Feldman

Joyce is calling herself gay because she simply doesn't have the familiarity with the correct terminology to get it right on the first try, and Dorothy sure isn't going to correct her right now.

The Deliberate Myth

@ IIana All fair. I am not lesbian, so my take was not the most knowledgeable or informed.

tifani

Hey at this point I’ve pled my case best I can. Well just have to see how it goes.

Dmitri0240

Far from describing Joyce and Dorothy as selfish, I'd personally argue that their shared inclination to always put their own needs second has resulted in *more* pain and drama in the long run. Framing the poly option as the only kind option disregards the very real possibility that that's simply not a relationship structure that Joyce or Dorothy would be happy with. Joyce doesn't "owe" Joe an open relationship anymore than Becky owed her family a son-in-law. I might agree that Joyce owes Joe an answer, but she already emphatically gave one: "I can't date two people at the same time". So Joe's not waiting for an answer; he's waiting for an explanation, or for her to change her mind. And I think it's completely justifiable if Joyce decides not to put her entire life on hold to immediately stumble through an explanation about her feelings on polyamory with someone who has clearly thought about it 100x more than she has. Just because someone got hurt doesn't mean there's a villain to blame. Assuming Joyce's and Dorothy's mutual attraction is real (and one has to jump through an extraordinary number of logical hoops to conclude otherwise), at least three people were going to get hurt no matter what. Whether they got hurt a day or so earlier when it would have been easiest, whether they got hurt when they did, or whether they got hurt a few years down the road, it was going to happen.

tifani

Nowhere in my post do I call Joyce or Dorothy villains.

David M Willis

every slipshine from now on is another joyce/dorothy slipshine

Harold

@Empress of Robots: Well, that doesn't always work-- Oh, wait, "takeout" as in takeout food. Sorry. Thought you were referring to something else.

tifani

I’m not arguing that she (Joyce or Dorothy too) are being (intentionally) cruel or malicious. I’m saying the opposite: they’re human, and humanity doesn’t automatically equal moral clarity. My argument is about the difference between emotional honesty and emotional avoidance. Focusing on Joyce (because I’m not editing all this. I forgot to mention Dorothy when I typed all this shit originally so just know I’m also speaking on her too so and just throw her name on when it also applies) Joyce didn’t intend to hurt Joe (or Becky), but she also didn’t take the steps to minimize harm when she could’ve — and that distinction matters. Kindness isn’t the absence of harm; it’s the willingness to face how your choices affect other people, even when it’s uncomfortable. Joyce avoiding that conversation wasn’t evil, but it was easier, and that’s what I mean by selfish. Not “bad person selfish,” but “self-preserving at the expense of empathy” selfish. She protected herself from discomfort, and in doing so, let someone else carry it. And yes, I absolutely agree not everyone would want or be happy in a poly relationship — that’s not what I’m arguing either. I’m saying that within this story, the moral through-line has been about growth through empathy, communication, and mutual care. Joe’s patience, Dorothy’s clarity, Joyce’s confusion — they’re all orbiting the same question: what does it mean to love responsibly? If the point of this arc is learning how to be kind even when it’s hard, then I think the narrative has been setting up for an ending that reflects that — not punishment, but integration. That’s why I see polyamory not as “the only kind option” but as a thematic resolution that honors everyone’s growth without turning love into a zero-sum equation. To me, that’s the moral tension Willis is exploring: the work of kindness versus the comfort of avoidance. No villains here — just people learning what it actually costs to be good to one another.

ArdieBea

@ Tifani We largely agree. I think Joyce's conversations with Joe and Dorothy are going to be difficult and potentially painful for all of them. Which is just the reality of their situation, no moral judgements required. Talking it through, here (and I'm sorry, I think best by trying to communicate with others, rather than having everything nice and clear in my head and then expressing it perfectly) I sort of hope, for Joe's sake, that they *don't* go down the poly route - because I think Joe deserves better than what he'd get from that, right now and for the foreseeable future. I can't see any way that he wouldn't just be Joyce's 'side piece' and he should be so much more. His arc has been extraordinary as he's learned to use the empathy muscles he had all along. The Malaya/Joe slipshine was an important beat in that journey, and a real pity that it has to be paywalled. It's in moments like that and others he's learned so much about himself and what's possible and what he really wants in relationships. Joyce has been central to that learning, but that doesn't mean she needs to be it's endpoint. I think the biggest danger for Joe, right now, is that he doesn't allow himself to let go, or grieve what he had, but tries too hard to cling to it. And that doesn't sound like a healthy poly route to me. I'm not anti-poly per se for the three of them; just not now. Not for Joe.

tifani

So this is how I learn Joe and Malaya fucked. @ardie: you’re coming to me In good faith so I’m gonna put some thought into this reply. Be back in like…10 minutesish. Gotta say I love stretching these English major and philosophy….passer muscles (I got a C in ethics but I have watched all the good place so brb).

MrShoggoth

I don’t support the polyamory option for this story and I’m not sure if it’s heading in that direction at all, but the way you’ve explained it (from a story/thematic perspective) genuinely makes sense with what Willis has written and I’m now curious to see where it goes from here

tifani

So many words….Can you tell I’m in a bit of a hyperfixation mania type of sitch? Cuz I’m…not. Nope. (Puts mask back on)

Mariah

I hope they suffer they deserve is for annoying me the last two yeard.

Smoochie

@Kelly one day I will commit a tumblr essay to Walky and Joyce’s rivalry over Dorothy. From a certain point of view Walky knew his days could be numbered. Dorothy letting Joyce snatch her always mid-break-up and that being the end of it is for another day.

Astariel

God, I hope that's true.

Astariel

Joyce has the right to take as long as she needs to to think things over before having that conversation, and frankly, it's better for both of them if they don't have it before she gets her thoughts in order. Joe is going to be in pain even if Joyce continued the conversation immediately unless he got immediate and enthusiastic consent to the poly proposal, and that's frankly the least likely option for her to go with if she's rushed into making a quick decision.

Astariel

I don't think we're going to get a timeskip until we see more of Becky & Dina, at least, but I've certainly been wrong before.

ArdieBea

@ Tifani *Lays trail of salt-and-vinegar chips....*

zee

Malaya and Joe leaving to fuck after the list thing was a big deal, its when he fell back a little into his old ways (or tried to) to run away from a hard conversation with Joyce. You probably just forgot

zee

Anyway I think regardless of how well it'd go for the characters, the story is definitely going to explore the poly path. It's been set up already, I think it's at least going to be attempted before inevitably crashing and burning. And I'm so god damn hype

zee

It's not even a familiarity thing, a lot of people use gay as an umbrella term for any same sex attraction. I say I'm gay all the time but I'm actually bi/ace and in a het relationship. Gays a fun word, especially for these queer ass Zoomers. It doesn't mean they actually ID as lesbians

tifani

@ardie: you summoned me with the food of the 90% of my diet?

tifani

For real I’m eating a bag now.

tifani

Okay honestly? No she fucking doesn't. Joyce does not have the right to take indefinite time to “process.” Joe’s continued patience has already exceeded what could reasonably be expected of someone in his position. He has been transparent, kind, and restrained in the face of betrayal. The idea that “he’ll be in pain either way,” therefore it doesn’t matter how long Joyce waits, is fucked up. The inevitability of pain does not erase the moral responsibility to minimize it. Choosing to prolong uncertainty is an active decision to let harm metastasize. The continued delay is not confusion—it is negligence. Accountability does not vanish in the presence of self-discovery or love/horniness. Blah dee blah blah blah. Can they please just talk so we can stop this debate? I can't do this anymore. 1000% over it. I've said my peace so until this plot stops stagnating I'm just going to stop running my mouth. For nowish. I just started watching vox machina. Anyone else like that show?

Maude Reads Things

She might but she might not be returning alone. And well...that might is kinda contingent on Dorothy I think. Although Willis did say he'd been wanting to write a cheating/affair storyline (I forget which word you used, sorry, Willis) so this 'not answering Joe/leaving Dorothy in the dark' might actually go for a while.

Maude Reads Things

I think her point is more 'just because she loves you doesn't mean she'll be back' or vice versa 'just because she's back doesn't mean she loves you'. Sarah is cynical like that

Sajuuk-Khar

Yeah, that’s probably true, she’s probably just showing her prickly side as sympathy.
