LupinThe8th

Joyce's sexual conquests must wear sweater vests as a symbol of her triumph. Joe actually escaped just in time.

MrShoggoth

I’m sure this is all going to be fine and isn’t just an extended calm before the storm.

The Lurker

"Stat" is an abbreviation derived from the Latin word "statim," meaning "immediately.” But you knew that.

AE Gonzalez

The ol’ post-sex stank.

David Jackson

It's short for "statim!" Latin for "immediately."

Nicholas A. Jalowick

Remember when they both wore the exact same outfit accidentally? Now they can do it on purpose, while making out! Yayyy! =D

Logibear

Aha. Those darn logistics are starting to rear their ugly head. Dorothy is gonna need to make a chart for handling the next couple of days.

Astariel

He did wear one on their date.

Sajuuk-Khar

He did not (escape, to be clear. He did wear one. He will wear more, I imagine.)

Harold

@Logibear: NOW you're speaking her language!

Sajuuk-Khar

Joyce at least wear clean clothes I beg you queen

Harold

"OH YEAH"

Elizabeth

You say stereotype Dorothy, and I say time honored tradition! Life’s too short for the games the het’s play, get that U-haul (hand cart? It’s only 31 steps, but the back and forth’s add up! Work smarter, not harder) Also, the fewer times you have to be in or around Becky the better, just one big cartful and be done

Harold

Dumbing of Age, Book 16: I'm Gonna Need to See You in a Sweater Vest, STAT

Astariel

Get in the sweater vest, Dorothy! I'd love to see Dorothy move in, but I have a feeling Sarah would have some issues with that.

Noelle Eve Palmer

huh, wouldn't have expected that to be a stereotype dorothy knew about, her research is THOROUGH

William Lewis

I'm giggling like a loon not the least because my GF gave me a sweater vest she knitted for her late father yesterday ... 😎

Logibear

It will become Joyce's "Come Hither" catchphrase, mark my words.

LupinThe8th

Yeah, the prospect of making a chart is gonna excite her so much that round two is about to start.

Harold

@Elizabeth: Hate to be That Guy, but it's 33 steps

Sajuuk-Khar

Sarah comes back from Tony’s to find she’s now Becky’s roommate and just gives a disgusted growl

5099 5618 v2.0

@Seth Aaron Hershman has they she pronouns Joyce: "Face it, Tiger. You just hit the jackpot!"

Noelle Eve Palmer

dorothy plugging a big usb that says "LESBIAN KNOWLEDGE" into her ear

Elizabeth

GDI! I had that typed and second guessed myself rather than look it up

Sajuuk-Khar

Post-sex and still-tear-gas-residue-retaining stank

Sajuuk-Khar

Also put down a towel, Dotty, you big baby

Harold

@LupinThe8th: As the end of the Slipshine implies, I think we're well beyond round two at this point

Sajuuk-Khar

hur hur hur in Becky hur hur

5099 5618 v2.0

@Noelle Palmer Murderbot would have me believe the input port is at the base of the skull, if Dr. Gurathin is any indication.

Sajuuk-Khar

See, this is the real reason I’m so pro-polycule, Joe is there to help Dorothy make the charts/fetch her office supplies

5099 5618 v2.0

@LupinThe8th ~graphs Charts Graphs and charts Graphs, graphs, charts, charts Graphs and charts~ --Dorothy, probably

The Deliberate Myth

You say filing, I say "getting in her steps on her fitbit."

Astariel

Didn't even consider that possibility, was thinking more of there being three in Joyce/Sarah's room and Sarah quickly becoming homicidal as Joyce & Dorothy act lovey-dovey around her.

GundamBradley

Oversized shirts are more a thing you can expect when you're dating the Joes or Ethans of the world, not a gal who is decidedly less stacked than you. Them's the breaks.

Sajuuk-Khar

@5099: Dotty is old-school, she has a Ghost in the Shell-style cyberbrain (probably Stand Alone Complex for a precise ref)

5099 5618 v2.0

@Sajuuk-Khar I would not blame them for flipping the mattress, frankly. Maybe ...after toweling it down, now that you mention it. But still.

Logibear

@Sajuuk-Khar and Joyce is the very willing test subject. Ethics committee be damned

Sajuuk-Khar

ANOTHER win for poly, Joyce, no matter if you fuck your bf or gf you can just be like “Joe! Big shirt please!”

Kelly (they-them)

"One of my hanky-panky partner's oversized shirts" could be interpreted 2 ways Joyce wants to wear one of Dorothy's shirts. Or Joyce wants to wear an oversized shirt belonging to one of her sexual partners. Which would imply she sees herself as having two hanky-panky partners. Straight up, before I reread that panel, I thought Joyce meant she wanted to wear one of Joe's shirts.

Morgan Byrd

Yeah, you GET that portentious sweater boi

5099 5618 v2.0

@S-K Well, if anyone in the cast *would* go for a full-conversion model [1] ... [1] - Except maybe Carla. Maybe. Hers would be custom, tho.

Sajuuk-Khar

Look, Dorothy and Joyce aren’t *that* bad, also they know three people in a room more than a couple hours summons Ruth in femur-hunting mode

DiDi-chan

Move in? Wow, Joyce is really good at just... is it compartmentalization? Dorothy at least still has the wherewithal to know that there's a reckoning just waiting in the wings... Does Joyce know about Tony yet? I don't recall. If she does, it might explain why she thinks she can get away with just moving Dorothy in without any resistance in Sarah's end. Because if she doesn't know... then it feels like she's become stupider in her bliss.

Kelly (they-them)

The clean Dorothy clothes are being guarded by Becky right now

Kelly (they-them)

Joyce buys Dorothy an XXL shirt so she can wear it herself after Dorothy gets her nerd stink on it

Sajuuk-Khar

True, which is why Joyce should put Dotty in a clean sweater vest and steal more of Sal’s stuff.

Andrea Andrew

Going full Donald Joyce. Landry after sex is always hard.

Sajuuk-Khar

Getting my “sickos” turtleneck back on, fresh out of the dryer

5099 5618 v2.0

@S-K (/A big-dude sized shirt is thrown into frame from off-screen ) J: Thanks, babe! (/A hand appears from out of frame, gives a thumbs up, and slides back out of frame.) D: (|°-°) (•_•|) (???)

Alexandra Falk

Stat! comes from latin statim, meaning immediately.

5099 5618 v2.0

@S-K One must Do Laundry regularly, after all.

shoutytrack | issa maspro

don't put turtlenecks in the dryer, they'll shrink! edit: Kelly, I thought the same thing- I think Joyce might be the type of little sister that thinks it's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission, so while she's totally fine with holding hands with two people simultaneously because she loves them both... it can lead to some fuzzy lines. Fuzzier than dorothy would like, anyway

Tessea

Short Circuit reference FTW. now the real question is if they remember to take the so... newspaper off the door before they go to sleep.

Maude Reads Things

Now, Joyce, be reasonable. You know full well Dorothy has sweater vests of her very own. :P

Logibear

They just had dad pizza before this, was that breakfast or lunch? What time is it? How long have they been going at it?

Astariel

Well, I certainly don't think they're bad, but Sarah has a low tolerance for...pretty much anything.

Kelly (they-them)

Maybe Dad pizza was brunch. I don't know when they would have had time to eat before then, but I also don't see why a pizza (and subs) place would be open for breakfast

Kelly (they-them)

A lot of the beds in the dorms at my college had what was probably a vinyl covering. Maybe this was one of the reasons Maybe it was the primary reason

Uniquitous

Hey laser-lips! Yer mama was a snowblower!

Uniquitous

A most piquant bouquet

Kelly (they-them)

I don't disagree, but it wouldn't fulfill Joyce's desire to mark herself as loved

Kelly (they-them)

@Sajuuk, imagine Joe incorporating sweater vests into his daily wardrobe until he gets an answer on polyamory It would be a pretty good strategy. Dorothy and Joyce are both clearly into them (in addition to frequently being inside of sweater vests)

Tessea

Going by their Fitbits, I'd say a good guess would be around an hour. I would guess it's still mid-afternoon/dinnertime the day after the protest.

MrShoggoth

If forgiveness/permission is Joyce's mentality on doing things, consider me worried that she isn't going to be prepared for people being unforgiving in the future.

ArdieBea

Sorry, the "partner's" in there is singular possessive; definitely only referring to Dorothy.

Dahlia Rose

What does Tony have to do with what Joyce and Dorothy do? He doesn't get a say in it, they hardly know him at all for one thing.

Kelly (they-them)

Maybe Joyce doesn't have a great grasp on the plural possessive. Like that guy in the bonus strip who said T-Rex instead of T. Rex

5099 5618 v2.0

@Kelly (they-them) I suspect the latter.

AE Gonzalez

Which Short Circuit reference? It’s been almost 40 years since I last saw the whole movie.

Tessea

Thank you!! I always wondered but never remembered to look it up.

Zesstra

Not only does Dorothy share a room with Becky, but they both share the corresponding half-bath with Dina and Amber, so I'm sure there will be *absolutely no drama about any of this going forward*. ... I'll get the popcorn.

Logibear

Also, Gender Studies with Joyce, Becky and Dorothy will be deeeelightful.

Zesstra

Some one pointed out the biology class being a problem the other day as well. Willis was not kidding about blowing up the strip with this pairing becoming real. It's all I ever wanted and I get fresh suspense as well!

NinjaZaku

Haven't come across the u haul stereotype in a while, that made me laugh

Rob McBobson

I'm assuming that you've already picked one, but "I'm gonna need to see you in a sweater vest, STAT" would make a pretty good book title. Maybe too short, but still pretty good.

Empress of Robots

It was me!! I pointed out the hilarity that will be Bio this week! I even want to make them T shirts to commemorate the occasion!

Kazo

Immediately shipping it with the Fuck Truck

tifani

They’re going to run into Joe and Sarah on their way to do laundry. Yeah. This definitely has “photos taken 5 minutes before a disaster” vibes.

tifani

Laundry in this comic isn’t really about clothes — it’s about exposure, boundaries breaking down, and the emotional residue people leave. This is telling us exactly what’s about to happen: boundaries will collapse, something raw will surface, and whatever’s been neatly folded away is about to get aired out in public.

tifani

Joyce is AMAZING at compartmentalization unfortunately reality doesn’t stay in all the little boxes you put stuff in.

tifani

I smell ozone. I feel alive. The entropy of this story just shifted — forward momentum is ensuing. (Grabs salt and vinegar chips.)

tifani

Willis you beautiful asshole. I’ll buy your book!

tifani

He wore one on their date and was wearing it when they had lesbian sex (he fingered her) so not only did he not escape he is the introduction to the now established pattern.

tifani

I think Sarah has proven she is actually way more capable of patience than anyone gives her credit for with all this shit. But patience time has run out.

Harold

@Logibear: It's Robin's Political Science class that Joyce, Dorothy and Becky are all in now (along with Sarah). Joyce and Dorothy took Gender Studies during the fall semester. Becky's in Leslie's class now, with Ruth, Jennifer, Carla and Charlie.

Sajuuk-Khar

Joyce and Dorothy about to walk into class with some schmaltzy love song playing, golden aura Smash cut to Becky next to them, who is surrounded by darkness and her audible BGM is all Linkin Park all the time

Sajuuk-Khar

@Kelly: GOD that would be actually pathetic but ALSO ADORABLE???? I kind of want him to go for it!! I would laugh a lot but it’d be cute even if it’s also goofy!

Sajuuk-Khar

(Being “in Becky” is a privilege that’s gonna be reserved for Ruth soon HEYOOOOO)

Railway Series Book Club

my brain categorizes that shirt as the Default Dorothy Shirt, both because it's from the back of Book 1, AND because i've used the 15-4 dorothy key art as an art reference or in stupid tumblr shitpost edits too many times for that key art to be anything other than "dorothy.png" in my mind

KittyKai

OH MY GOD YES IT WILL BE SO PAINFUL FOR ME BUT SO GODDAMN JUICY ADGKNCYJBG

KittyKai

I have my own popcorn Nomnomnomnomnom :3

Siberian Rabbit

I don't know, I feel like Joyce's been feeling a bit off for a minute now. Isn't one of her strongest character traits, as well as a foundational aspect why Dotty even likes her, supposed to be that she has this strong inner sense of justice and doing right by her friends? the back to back "Joe I promise I'll talk to you later, I have to go" *disappears into the mist* into "Man, I'm feeling kind of bad about Becky rn" "WHO CARES I WUV U WIFEYYYYYY :D" is really un-Joyce-like, to me. (I'm at least 80% sure that neither of them's aware that Becky's been dealing with suicidal ideation, otherwise not going after her would be fairly outrageous.) (Not that I agree with Dotty's characterizing that whole situation as "a betrayal", but it makes sense that Teenage Atlas would look at it like that.) A lot of this is probably a function of the fact that most of the last few months have been mostly about Dorothy so it's been a while since we've followed Joyce as the actual MC of an arc, but still. Strange stuff.

tifani

If this goes the way I’m thinking I might finally understand edging.

tifani

Just kidding I understand edging….intimately.

tifani

Her recent behavior only feels strange because she’s refused to see herself and Dorothy inside the larger picture they’ve created. (like a lot of their fans apparently) For about seventy-two hours, they’ve been moving through the haze of their own love bubble — a self-contained ecosystem where every choice felt justified by intensity alone. Inside that frame, they could pretend moral cause and effect didn’t exist. Now the bubble’s popped. The consequences are about to come knocking. In less than three days, they’ve quietly rewritten the social structure around them, and the cost of that isolation is starting to surface. The small, self-serving choices, the emotional shortcuts, the rationalizations disguised as growth — they’ve all compounded. This isn’t punishment; it’s equilibrium. The narrative is restoring context. And for those who defended their behavior because “it felt right at the time,” “or it’s okay because queer” “or it’s okay because symbolic wedding” you were wrong and that’s the lesson unfolding. When morality is feelings-based, you only learn the cost through fallout.

tifani

Relational ethics holds that morality isn’t a private trait but a shared structure — a constantly adjusted balance between people. Every decision alters the conditions of trust, safety, and belonging that let a group function. For about seventy-two hours, Joyce and Dorothy have acted as if that equilibrium didn’t apply to them. They built a closed system where sincerity justified everything, mistaking emotional intensity for truth. In doing so, they disrupted the social contract — the implicit agreement that self-discovery can’t come at the expense of others’ stability. Their violation isn’t sensational; it’s procedural. They quietly rewrote the social fabric around them without consent. The rupture isn’t moral collapse so much as a failure of context: when self-perception overrides mutual accountability, relational ethics dissolves. Now equilibrium is returning. The fallout isn’t punishment; it’s the system correcting itself — a reminder that meaning, like morality, only holds when it’s held together.

tifani

What’s happening now is the natural correction phase of relational ethics. When two people form a closed circuit—acting like their feelings exist outside the group’s gravity—the field around them distorts. Other relationships strain (Becky/Dina), communication fragments, and eventually the imbalance forces exposure. The “fallout” isn’t punishment; it’s the system restoring coherence. Every connection that was excluded is pulling the story back into shared context.

tifani

The story’s next stage is stabilization. After the rupture, what follows isn’t collapse but reconfiguration. In relational-ethics terms, the field restores balance by widening to include more honest connections. Polyamory, if it emerges, isn’t the chaos people fear; it’s the structural adaptation that allows everyone’s autonomy and affection to coexist without secrecy. For those outside the polycule, a new normal will form around clarity rather than exclusion. The group’s social fabric re-knits itself when expectations are named instead of implied. Boundaries become explicit, emotional labor redistributes, and the entire network settles into a slower, steadier rhythm. The point isn’t that polyamory “fixes” anything—it’s that transparency replaces distortion. Once every participant is visible in the system, the story can hold its shape again.

tifani

Relational ethics is brutal and beautiful at once. It’s the reminder that morality doesn’t live inside us; it’s the space we create between each other. Every choice changes that space — stretching it, tearing it, repairing it. When it breaks, the system rushes to heal, not out of vengeance but out of need. The beauty is that correction itself is proof of connection: we only collide because we still belong to the same field. It’s the mercy in the machine. The truth that goodness isn’t a possession; it’s a current that passes between us, alive only while it’s shared. Every time we reach for each other we alter the field — stretch it, fracture it, rebuild it. When someone breaks trust, the world doesn’t collapse; it recalibrates. The ache you feel in the aftermath isn’t punishment, it’s the universe knitting itself closed around the wound. That’s the terrifying, tender part: the system only hurts because it still works. The pain of consequence is the sound of belonging reasserting itself.

tifani

And with that I have said everything I’m gonna say on this until the storyline ends. I’m still lurking but I’ve said all I need to say on this topic.

zee

Joyce has previously shown massive blindspots when it comes to her sense of romance. She has terminal romcom brain that refuses to process that actions can cause lasting hurt if it's True Love™.

zee

I think they mean Joyce might be thinking that Sarah will be staying at her new boyfriends place a lot. Similar to when Becky moved into billies room

zee

I can't imagine being adjacent to the queer community and not knowing tht joke, it's massive

zee

Oh I think they're definitely that bad. When I was a kid I had a pair of kissing teddy bears with magnets in the mouths so they'd be stuck together. They're that.

Beck Chonigman

Hey. When I said I supported women's rights AND women's wrongs, I wasn't just blowing smoke out my ass.

Astariel

Nah, they're great. In fact, they haven't kissed even once in the last three strips! I think they should be kissing more!

DiDi-chan

*Tony* doesn't. But SARAH does. And if Joyce is talking about moving her new girlfriend into her dorm when she already knows her roommate does NOT approve of their relationship, it'd probably be best for Joyce to make sure Sarah isn't around to see the nonsense. We don't need a repeat of the first morning they tried to "sneak" out and Sarah met Joyce with immense disapproval. Because I guarantee it's not going away any time soon. And considering Joyce *used* to consider Sarah as a big sister to look up to... I'd think her opinion should matter at least a little bit?

Sajuuk-Khar

@Logibear: if Girl Genius has taught me any one thing it’s about the powerful nature of OT3 poly ships And if it’s taught me any two things it’s that every Spark/Dr. Frankenstein (Dorothy) and Construct/Creature (Joyce) combo needs a chief minion/Igor (Joe)

tifani

Airing dirty laundry was right there and I only thought it now and you have all disappointed me by not pointing it out before me. Especially you Rob.

tifani

You don’t think them kissing during sex is implied? You gotta buy the slipshine or it didn’t happen?

tifani

I mean that policy would be great for Willis’ bank account no doubt.

tifani

But one last prediction: Joyce is going to find out that Becky renounced God and broke up with Dina, and it’ll trigger an immediate collapse. She’ll frame it not as coincidence but as cosmic consequence: “I sinned, and God punished me through my friend for it.” That’s the logic of someone still haunted by a moral universe she claims not to believe in. Her crisis of faith has always been theoretical; now it’s embodied. In relational-ethics terms, the field is closing its loop—her choices finally touching the person she loves most. What’s coming isn’t just guilt; it’s grief, moral terror, and the unbearable realization that her freedom came with a cost. And because Joyce can’t metabolize quietly, the fallout will be public, a confession disguised as a collapse.

Astariel

Of course they kissed during sex. (And yes, I bought the Slipshine). But that didn't happen during the last three strips, did it?

Dmitri0240

I'd argue that a lot of the pain and drama in this instance is a direct result of Joyce's and Dorothy's shared inclination to put the needs of others before their own. They tried to suppress their feelings for one another to protect Joe, Becky, and Walky. And all that accomplished was causing it to explode out at an inconvenient time. If they had succeeded in suppressing it further, it would have just been worse when the dam finally did break. If they had been more "selfish" about their needs and desires, they could have done everything the "right way" a few days ago. Becky, Walky, and Joe were going to get hurt no matter what, but they could have saved Jocelyn and Amber from some close calls, and saved Sarah from having to defend Joe. In short, I think this drama is entirely in keeping with their characters.
