Megh

this is the most joynk and dorpy they've ever been

Mark Thompson

That is some astounding post-nut clarity

DustyMarie53

This truly is the joynk and dorpy moment ever

C

"TOO MUCH POST-NUT CLARITY!" Oh Joyce...

Andrea Andrew

Agatha all along! Off to Broadway.

ArdieBea

Talk to Asma anyway - more Asma = good.

Logibear

Did Dorothy fuck Joyce so hard she tapped into the Noosphere?

Diane

YAY AGATHA!

William Lewis

Giggle. This is a moment where it was good having been Episcopal: all the ritual, half the guilt - not quite Roman and not quite Protestant but absolutely no fundamentals 😈

Arlo C-J

Walking backwards down a staircase carrying a laundry basket is the most psychotic thing I've ever seen anyone do in this comic. Maybe any comic.

Brendan T

I think we've found the book title

GundamBradley

I am glad Joyce is learning a lesson that, to date, Dorothy has been astonishingly bad at learning.

MrShoggoth

Lucky. Growing up Roman is like getting sprayed with glitter: you’re finding sparkly bits for ages even when you’ve scrubbed clean.

Michael Schmidt

Oh, wow. I feel like a real heel now. Unpaid emotional labor for assuaging guilt over missteps.

Harold

Dumbing of Age, Book 16: If You WANT to Think We're Tacky, I'm Okay with It, as I'm Currently Vibing Off Transgressive Feelings!

DiDi-chan

OK. Logic. I will take logic. A nice change of pace.

GundamBradley

Talking to Asma is perfectly fine, it's more that Joyce is right, Dorothy and her will insist on going on and on and on and on with an apology that seeks absolution but doesn't offer anything to the recipient.

Harold

The Continuing Erotic Adventures of Joynk and Dorpy: A Dumbing of Age Pornographique

GundamBradley

Who's that girl who's down with anything? It was Agatha all along!

Astariel

Yay, Agatha! Love Joyce feeling transgressive and also having surprisingly insightful unrelated to sex post-sex clarity.

darklion

I am informed by ciswomen I know that they don't think they get post-nut clarity. Can I get a random sample here?

Logibear

Dumbing of Age Book 17: You Guys are Never Tacky! Everything You Do Is Swell

taekwondogirl

It ain't every time but when it is, OOF

Doki

Well, anyone can get feelings of alertness post-orgasm - bodies do lot of funky hormonal stuff during sex. (I say 'can' because everyone's pretty different!) But, considering the term is often associated with shame after sexual activity, especially in the last decade... IDK, maybe you'd have to find some women/AFAB people who've had sex they're ashamed of?

Laura

ok dorothy, what if asma replies something like: "thanks for your apology, so what are you going to do about your faces on the paper; what will you say if someone from the broader media comes to talk to you about it?" i think joyce is right that good intentions alone may not be helpful. when the stakes are this high good actions will help show your sincerity/willingness to be better protestors.

Laura

yeah i don't ever get it but i don't think i experience pre-nut obscurity either

darklion

I don't remotely see PNC as shame. To me it's just that the "other head" doesn't contribute to thought processes at all due to being momentarily satisfied/exhausted. I've read that it might have to do with testosterone levels. In cismen there's a natural post-coital dip in levels, while in ciswomen there's a rise if anything. I just didn't think there were any ciswomen who experienced it the way cismen generally do.

Maybeeus

Commentors "Damn!! Why is Joyce being such an ASSHOLE it's so out of character! What's going on????" Joyce: "I'm an asshole because it's fun." I am reading a lot of text here... I've been very sick for the past two days and only just getting better so i'm gonna hold off on a huge wall of text but also POST NUT CLARITY JOYCE!!! AND MORE AGATHA!!!

Tessea

Agatha!! Wow, she's taller than I thought. Is she taller than Carla?

Logibear

Her tombstone will read 'Died going down after going down'

Sajuuk-Khar

Agatha, offscreen: Aw! Those two are FUCKIN’! They’ve been to pound town for sure! :3

Railway Series Book Club

"you guys are never tacky! everything you do is swell!" agatha is now on the main site comments' hit list

Doki

Yeah, I think Dorothy is the kind of person who needs to learn WHEN an apology is actually necessary and/or wanted. Sometimes the other party... just doesn't give a shit about your feelings. And I mean that nicely, because I have been that person LOL (the over-apologizer, not the not-giving-a-shit person). It's a really hard lesson to learn as an adult.

William Lewis

My mother was raised that way so I saw it up close & personal. Especially what the abusive priests of her youth left behind. Still, her final illness dragged her back and she wasn't happy I refused to "Swim the Tiber" as we call it. That was hardly my only, or even least, problem with that idea but it would have been enough...

Empress of Robots

Oh no! Joyce fucked all the smarts out of that Dorothy and then absorbed them into herself! LMAO

Lea

So...what would be the right response from Joyce, if so What is in Joyce's power to do about her face in the paper? Beyond what she's already tried? What should Joyce say if someone from the media asks her? I'm curious what the right answers are here for Joyce, or if she's just screwed her with no acceptable path forward.

Doki

Ehhhh, I looked it up and data seems limited on that. I mean, for one thing, most research studies aren't going to have people actually have sex right there, y'know? Hard to really replicate natural conditions. Also, I promise I mean this nicely, but the phrasing of "men do [x] while women do [y]" can come off a little, uh. How do I put this...? Trans-erasurey? Might wanna be careful with your phrasing there. (BTW I am trans myself so I promise I'm not saying this out of nowhere just to be mean.)

Sajuuk-Khar

Joyce secretly was a space vampire all along!

Snail

*four day belated scream as I catch up on last week's comics*

Snail

Awww - Agatha is the alphasweetie of this dorm.

I Know Why the Mowed Lawn Screams

kills me forever and ever when dorothy involuntarily invokes her inner buzzfeed liberal, godbless we WILL make you a beautiful leggy bisexual marxist-socialist one day

Sajuuk-Khar

(These commenters could benefit, methinks, from rereading the archive and maybe doing an It’s Walky dive because that might get them to understand that while, yes, Joyce is a sweetheart and feels injustice deeply, she is ALSO a bit selfish to the point of rules-lawyering, she’s always gotten off a bit on The Forbidden, and finally she’s impulsive as fuck for better OR worse. Dorothy sat on her feelings for months not because she’s got MORE queerness or secret angst, but because she is Dorothy—Joyce locked on and locked in within days not because she “forgot” to angst about gayness or is badly written, but because she’s Joyce and she no longer perceives queerness as a sin or a barrier, so it’s Dorothy-Seeking Missile Hours.)

5099 5618 v2.0

Does Agatha ever go by "Aggie"? (Asking because our cat's name is Agatha Harkness [1], but mostly we call her Aggie.) [1] - So named well before Wandavision came out, FWIW. Kathryn Hahn is pretty great, tho.

Sajuuk-Khar

Becky: I TOLDJA about stairs, Dotty! I warned you dogg!!! Dorothy: IT KEEPS HAPPENING Becky: I TOLDJA, Dotty. I TOLD you about STAIRS

Mariah

Agatha is a APOLOGIST she should be comforting joe every character should! - the mainsite probably

Logibear

Starting a petition to get more people to start using 'Swell' in their everyday vocab. I've never met a person who says it who isn't just a ball of sunshine.

MrShoggoth

Lifeforce 2 release date when?

5099 5618 v2.0

@MrShoggoth Right after "Demon Seed 2: The Quickening"[1], I assume. [1] - I assume Jared Leto would star, or at least be the voice of the house.

5099 5618 v2.0

@Sajuuk-Khar If what I remember about the absence of sound-proofing in dorms still holds, she doesn't have to guess. Nor does anyone else within two floors.

5099 5618 v2.0

@S-K I suspect she'll eventually see some of her mother in that part of herself. I suspect this will lock her brain out for the better part of a day, the first time that realization hits.

5099 5618 v2.0

@S-K "DO YOU HAVE STAIRS IN YOUR HOUSE" - Becky, probably

5099 5618 v2.0

@GundamBradley Be that as it may, I refuse to believe she inspired the song "Jolene". Sorry, no. That's where I pull the ripcord. Fun otherwise, tho.

5099 5618 v2.0

@Ario C-J Most psychotic thing you've seen anyone do SO FAR

Elizabeth

Thing I wouldn’t ever do in a dorm like situation, with a partner, no matter how infatuated I was with them: leave underwear conspicuously visible in my laundry bag. That stuff goes *way* at the bottom, not to be seen by anyone, preferably not even me.

Rob McBobson

@GB: Reminds me of what I read once. "Apologize once, not twice or more. Apologizing once shows that you're sorry. Apologizing twice just shows that you're not happy with how the other person reacted the first time, and you're hoping for a different reaction."

Rob McBobson

Do I want to know what that euphemism means?

William Lewis

Just a phrase meaning to go back to Rome since Tiber river is between Rome and London. Nothing more exciting 😎

Star Ringer

I'm pretty sure I understand Joyce's intent in the last panel, but I'm having a bit of trouble parsing the actual sentence structure...

ArchineerLock

I understand and relate to joyce conpletely

Rob McBobson

I'll be happy to clarify if you tell me which part's hard to parse.

John C. Kirk

I think that Greta Thunberg is a good role model here. Recently, the flotilla to Gaza got stopped and she was taken prisoner by the Israelis. After she was released, she basically said "Yes, I was mistreated, but this isn't about me - it's about what's happening to the Palestinians". In the comic, I think the right response would be similar. I.e. shift the focus away from the kiss to talk about why the university should divest from weapons funding. If Dorothy is the one apologising, I think she could make a decent attempt at that. If Joyce is the one apologising, it gets more tricky, because the "right" response would basically be a lie. I.e. she went to the protest in the first place to find Jocelyne, and she went back in to be with Dorothy, but I don't think she's ever mentioned having strong feelings about what's going in Bulmeria and (other fake country that I've forgotten the name of).

SkittleE

I and any girl I remember talking to about it have had post-nut clarity. I'mma guess it largely depends on the person.

Empress of Robots

You can tell the post nut clarify has set in for both of them because PRE NUT, they both would have been very proud to go around with a basket of laundry soaked with their collective sex juices.

Empress of Robots

(Just when you think there are no new sentences)

Star Ringer

I think the problem is that "vis-a-vis," regardless of actual meaning, is just semantic noise to me. And that's tripping me up and making the words feel salad-ish. What I THINK she's saying is: "When I've made social faux pas recently, I tend to insist on apologizing. I've heard it said the way I do that only helps me feel better, not the person I wronged, and obligates them to either spend their time and energy comforting me, or look unreasonable for not forgiving me even though I'm 'apologizing'." And to make that closer: "Does Asma WANT to be apologized to? Or is that just demanding unpaid emotional labor from her to make us feel better for having apologized? Cuz I've heard it said I do that." Do I have that right?

Empress of Robots

WAIT A SECOND. JOYCE! DOROTHY! PLEASE GO SHOWER BEFORE LAUNDRY OR AT LEAST WASH YOUR FACES! Fucking rookie sapphic move, ladies.

Rob McBobson

Yep, that's it. The answer was in you all along! :)

Harold

@Sajuuk-Khar: Welcome to Old Keener Buffet, now open 24 hours!

Rob McBobson

Was there in fact another country mentioned, regarding the Bulmeria situation?

darklion

Doki: If you don't mind me asking, are you fully transitioned? Do you think your mental state pre and post climax most matches your cisgender counterparts or your biological sex counterparts?

Mariah

im just going to vent my problems with the mainsite here so the "cheating bisexual trope" frames all bisexual as unable to to have a relationship because they are attracted to both genders and will inevitably cheat on others dorothy had several relationships that have nothing to do with her bisexuality. Danny Ruth and Jennifer all have relationships that do not frame there bisexuality was a issue. This would be the cheating bisexual trope if dorothy and joyce were the only bisexuals in the comic or if it framed there sexuality as the reason they cheated. Its similar to bury your gays bury your gays punishes gay characters for being gay it was created in the hayes code era. A show or movie is only bury your gays if it is framed as a punishment for being gay recent examples include the killing eve show while something like haunting of hill house is not the characters die but after living a long happy like the death is not a moral punishment. Im getting tired of younger fans just saying "trope bad " without understanding why its bad. Especially when in results in restricting queer creators.

Ilana Feldman

This explanation actually helped me parse the last panel, so thanks for that lol

Dmitri0240

Agreed. To me, the mitigating circumstance has never been that they are bi (or at least, that's the assumption, though only Dorothy has self-identified that way), but rather that hadn't even realized their attraction to women yet. If they were both openly or at least self-knowingly attracted to women leading up to this, they would have been crossing some major lines for most peoples' ideas of monogamy. Instead, they both had defensible reasons to believe that they really were just unusually close "gal pals". Joyce because she was raised fundamentalist and was more deeply closeted than most, Dorothy because being attracted to women may indeed be a rare, individual-specific exception for her.

Zesstra

AGATHA STATS This is Agatha's 58th appearance (excluding any bonus strips or anything else), and 26th strip in which she has any dialogue. With 19 words, this is her joint-6th wordiest strip, tied with Groundswell from Glower Vacuum (7:1). It's a three way tie if you count "3 Nephi 18:19" as four words, I counted it as three. Her wordiest strip is Broker from 3:3 with 43 words. Agatha has an F-bomb count of 0.

Calder Johnson

@Mariah - I'll preface by saying that over-all I agree with your reading. But I do want to point out that it's worth noting that while we've had plenty of examples of non-cheating bisexuals in the comic, at the same time when Willis decided that the absence of any kind of cheating storyline in a comic about college kids was a flaw and they wanted to tell one, they selected a bisexual couple as the focal point. And I can say personally, yeah, that didn't bother me at all because of the healthy examples of bisexuality we've already seen in the comic that you mentioned. But could also someone else be troubled by it? Sure, and I wouldn't necessarily chalk that up to media illiteracy - just where people to draw their individual lines about what they are or are not comfortable with in the media they consume. Which is kinda also my general plea for both this comment section as well as all the other forums people use to discuss this comic - Willis explicitly and transparently set out to tell a messy, complicated story about college kids cheating on their significant others. And yes, an uncomfortably large number of the reactions have been unhinged, misogynistic, or in bad faith. And at the same time, I think that it's worth extending some consideration that people can have equally messy, complicated feelings about a messy, complicated story - and as we've seen over the last few days with the jump cuts to Becky and Dina, where people draw their lines and what they are or are not comfortable with/condoning of can be all over the place - and that's ok!

zee

Fym no dotty, this is progress!

Mariah

Im totally fine with people being uncomfortable with the cheating storyline Im a little uncomfortable with how becky is clearly showing suicidal ideation and everyone including the characters in the comic seem to be brushing it off. What I take issues with is the personal attacks against willis or even the people who are enjoying this storyline as immoral condoning cheating or condoning manipulation and im seeing it more in more in the main site and even here.

Harold

Agatha, probably, responding to your diligent record-keeping: "D'AWWW!"

Zesstra

Her longest "Aw" is five ws long. It's in "Ruth and Billie" from 7:3, reacting to Ruth and Billie openly holding hands in the corridor. It was her only word in that strip, tied for 25th with Rounds from 4:2 with "S-sorry".

Zesstra

I made a spreadsheet for this this afternoon after having a nap because with Agatha it's a simple enough job. I tried doing something similar for the whole strip a while ago but: • There are too many unattributable lines of dialogue due to people speaking off-panel or people without names, made all the trickier when they might have a name later like that bully who, along with Paul, pushed Danny around on move in day and also helped out Blaine • Covered up lines of dialogue (eg people speaking over each other) • It's obviously just an incredibly arduous task

dorothy keener's left doinker

sorry you said beautiful leggy bisexual marxist-socialist and i passed out. what’s this webcomic thing

Harold

Also, deciding whether Nightguy and Reginald, Duke of Thingley should have their own separate listings (NOTE: applies only to Walky)

Dan Rabin

Zesstra: you can represent those uncertain attributions as special data values so that ciients of your data can go in and represent their own takes as to what's going on.

Astariel

According to Billie, their hall actually has surprisingly good soundproofing, or else people would have found out about her and Ruth a lot earlier.

Astariel

No, it's implied to be a civil war or some other kind of internal situation.

Astariel

The Tiber runs through Rome, actually. Doesn't go anywhere near London.

Maude Reads Things

Good question and it's hard to answer without knowing much about her.

5099 5618 v2.0

@Atariel I suspect that was the "Not My Problem Field" effect, as much as anything else

Calder Johnson

Totally agree with you on all those points! All of those takes are highly questionable... And as far as Becky goes, yeah, I find it honestly pretty exhausting how every comment section has taken to frantic whiplash trying to determine who the Villian-Of-The-Day is supposed to be and thereby feeding new fuel into the on-going dumpster fires in the comments. I mean like, these are a bunch of fictional horny anxiety-ridden teenagers handling a very messy situation in varying degrees of sub-optimal ways. Let's extend them, and by extension, all of us a little grace.

Dmitri0240

@Calder The thing that surprises me with the reaction to the cheating storyline is that this is about the tamest, most understandable form of cheating that could possibly exist. Short of Joe and Walky suddenly and uncharacteristically becoming abusive, it's hard to imagine what could have been done to further mitigate the impact. If the criticism were that the storyline was a bit safe and contrived in providing Joyce and Dorothy sympathetic explanations for their behavior, I'd buy that even if in this instance I think the contrivances are justifiable for the sake of a wonderful story. But the moral ferocity with which so many people are attacking Joyce and Dorothy truly bewilders me. As for Becky, I do agree she's in a bad place and needs some help. However, I do think it's worth remembering that while we've heard multiple troubling thoughts from her, those have been divided among multiple conversations and none of the actual characters have seen the full picture. And none of the people in those conversations are really the right people to provide the help that Becky needs in the first place. If she's thinking clearly (and it's frankly understandable if she's not), Dina would hopefully be contacting Leslie or another trusted friend to be there for Becky.
