Dina not sleeping on the dinosaur fucking hurt me deeply

Empress of Robots

Fuck. Dina laying down on the floor NOT on the dinosaur broke me.

C

...Why must you hurt my heart Willis?

HenryVolt

100% in character.

Bronxden

Honestly im feeling worst for walky because man i just want him and joe to be happy but also i love this ship and want amber/walky to be happy together

ProxityR

why did you feel the need to show us dina on the floor???? evil man

Rob McBobson

I can tell my difficulty to understand feelings surfacing. Could somebody be an angel and explain why Amber's feeling she doesn't deserve to be rewarded and wants to avoid that, and why she's glancing at Dina?

Ria

Shoutout to tiff for all the relational ethics posting, you've got me perfectly primed for the now-unfolding sicko feast 🥰

Ria

Selves meeting contexts entering tension changing selves changing contexts

Ria

Nature proceeds

Rob McBobson

Also, I know it's out of character for Dina not to be on the dinosaur, but why is it sad? (Ashamed that I need to ask. Still, asking is how we learn, like that racist Disney song says. )

Sajuuk-Khar

🎶open the door get on the floor dying inside beside the dinosaur 🎶

Laura

Amber indirectly helped get dorothy and joyce together by encouraging dorothy to send the titty pic, which resulted in becky and dina’s situation

Ragtime

For her planning, getting Dorothy with Joyce to break up him and Dorothy

Doki

Becky gave it to her. :C

Crunchos cereal

Because the dinosaur was a gift from Becky.

Megh

i feel bad for laughing at this

Empress of Robots

Also, when Amber earlier took credit/blame with Dina for getting Dorothy and Joyce together I kinda rolled my eyes a little but Amber did kinda set off the whole chain of events. Without Dorothy’s titty pic, Joe wouldnt have come to yank Dorothy out of the closet kicking and screaming and Joyce probably wouldn’t have had the courage to start admitting that her feelings for Dorothy weren’t EXACTLY heterosexual. Even though they both would have gotten there eventually, I do feel like Amber poor jet fuel on that kindling

Sajuuk-Khar

Amber believes that her desire to bang Walky like a badger in heat and some very clumsy social engineering she did to push Dorothy towards her bisexual epiphany lead to Walky’s breakup with Dorothy, and from thence she is also responsible for Dina’s breakup with Becky. This is nonsense borne from a lifetime of emotional abuse and instability but y’know.

Empress of Robots

Also also YAY Amber admitting-ish she still has feelings for Walky. I really like them as a couple because they’re both little goblins (positive)

Fart Captor

I'm starting to think Willis might be doing this to us on purpose

Mariah

Basically becky and dina's first time happened on the dinosaur dina sleeping away from it is a sign of her seperation from becky.

Ali Youngman

Wait which racist Disney song?

Sajuuk-Khar

it’s a bad day for ‘em all around!

5099 5618 v2.0

@Bronxden Give it time. Seems like it has a chance to work out.

Dan Rabin

Gulp! Dina appears placid, serene, and calm, possibly because she has determined that avoiding the dinosaur Becky gave her is a big enough concession to the current situation. I like the way all the bright lighting is from the devices. In panel 2 the boundary of the phone-light underscores Amber's eye moving to notice Dina on the floor. Amber protects Dina from having to deal with Walky in her current state, even as we see that she herself would welcome him if only she deserved anything. And Amber's forefinger, especially as poised while reading Walky's text in panel 1.

Michael Ball

Presumably "That's what Uncle Remus says"

5099 5618 v2.0

What is the bulge next to Dina? Is that just from the dino's snout?

Gale Tazzin

Dina abandoning the dinosaur is more shocking than Becky abandoning God

Michael Ball

If that's not what you mean, please enlighten me.

Astariel

Feeling bad for everyone here. Amber's blaming herself when it's not her fault, Walky doesn't get the distraction he needs, and Dina on the floor is just heartbreaking. :(

Rob McBobson

@Ali Youngman: "What Made Red Man Red" would be the song in question. @Michael Ball: Honestly, I've never even seen Song of the South.

DramaQueen

I hate that completely normal actions like helping a new gay couple come into being, are now weighted with such poison.

Harold

@Bronxden: "I just want him and Joe to be happy" could be interpreted in several ways

EnterTheHero

a n d t h e h i t s j u s t k e e p c o m i n g !

MrShoggoth

As a writer, I can confirm that we do indeed do stuff like this on purpose.

Astariel

The single most heartbreaking panel in the entire comic so far! /Homer Simpson voice

DramaQueen

It’s really giving fuel to all the Dorothy-haters after she has been twisting herself in a pretzel trying to manage everyone’s expectations of her and has allowed Becky to bully her all semester. I hope Willis does not make this too dark because then the lesson will be that Dorothy should have gone to Yale and continued burying all of her feelings forever.

Logibear

It's a sack containing what's left of Becky's body...

GundamBradley

I feel like Walky's reaction suggests he gets on some level the actual tone of Amber's response, which is impressive.

5099 5618 v2.0

@GundamBradley He's not dumb, he's... Deadpool, basically. Humor and trolling are his go-to coping mechanisms. Also, he's a little lazy, but still pretty perceptive (see also: calling out DoJo way before it was anything approaching a real possibility)

5099 5618 v2.0

@GundamBradley (Also, I suspect he wouldn't have survived nearly 500 nuggs without some sort of healing factor)

5099 5618 v2.0

@Ria Thought you were about to break out into "Sweet Caroline", for a moment there

Girlycore

I mean, she specifically encouraged Dotty to cross a line in her relationship in the hopes of breaking them up so she could have Walky. It's reasonable she'd feel guilty rn.

5099 5618 v2.0

@Audrey Brin She still has it, tho. That's something. After a really bad breakup, one of my exes kept a collar I got for her. She liked it enough that it survived the purge of momentos. It was kind of nice to see that she liked it that much. Maybe that's where they are, ATM Tho I am hoping D&B[1] will patch things up, at some point. [1] - what was their ship name, again?

Aubrey Bryn

I didn't know they had a ship name It's Dinky now

5099 5618 v2.0

@Aubret Brin "Dinkies" - Velma, probably (I like it)

Tessea

Noooo Dina...... And this isn't Amber's fault! Becky's the one who made Dina feel like a rebound hookup. And Becky has abandonment issues.... Stupid near-omnipotent reader viewpoint. These girls all need to communicate better to avert some of this negativity before Mary ends up the happiest person on the floor, watching everyone else suffer.

Packy Anderson

@Rob McBobson: I think few people have seen SotS. I was fortunate to get to see it once back in the mid 1970s.

Astariel

Yeah, but at most she sped things up a little. Joyrothy was going to happen at some point soon anyway. I think it's quite possible that Dorothy's breakdown at the protest and Joyce's response would have happened the same way even without the titty pic and Joe's confrontation with Dorothy. It makes sense that she feels guilty, especially because she's Amber, but I don't think she deserves to. In particular, Dina's unhappiness is not her fault at all.

Astariel

I don't want to discourage an optimistic take on Becky and Dina, as I'm hoping against hope that they'll pull through somehow, but it would be a seriously non-trivial task to get the dinosaur out of the room, let alone out of the dorm, especially Dina by herself. BTW, their ship name is canonically "Terrible Lizbians."

Kelly (they-them)

Slipshine might have a subscription fee, but this is the REAL cost of Joyce and Dorothy fucking

Kelly (they-them)

Agatha seems like she's doing pretty well - she'll probably stop Mary from being the happiest

Rob McBobson

@Packy Anderson: In my country, probably every single child knows the animals from that movie from the popular spin-off comics that Disney published. (Well, used to know, more like. Kids don't read Disney comics too much these days, sadly.)

William Lewis

I presume something from "Song of the South" of 1946 but it's been decades since it was last in theaters which would have been when I saw it. Disney hides it and barely acknowledges that it was even made.

Jay

One thing I appreciate narratively/storytelling-wise here is by having such a queer cast of characters, it allows room for these sorts of storylines. Getting to see the messiness of college life, especially when you're queer, I think is really important to see in fiction. People getting together or breaking up in any social circle is pretty normal and often messy, and I often see creators are scared to show it when they only have one or two queer characters exist in their cast out of fear of upsetting the audience and also leaving it feeling kinda hopeless that queer people don't get happy relationships. But Willis does a really nice job of giving...everything, good and bad. It makes for a great read even when certain character arcs make me feel sad (which good stories should do sometimes!). I'm deeply excited to see where it goes, even with being sad about where several characters are currently (and also delighted for Joyce and Dorothy).

Rob McBobson

@William Lewis: Nope, I'm thinking of "What Made Red Man Red" from Peter Pan. The only song I know from Song of the South is "Zip-a-Dee-Dooh-Dah".

NinjaZaku

i didn't clock what was happening with Dina on first read. Its been so long i forgot the dinosaur she sleeps on was a gift from Becky.

Rob McBobson

Yeah, I forgot too. That's the problem with serialized comic strips. We can't expect the cartoonist to repeat details like that when there's little enough space as it is, but me, I'm gonna forget details that happened a year ago or more.

Rob McBobson

Eh, I don't love the idea that it was gonna happen anyway. I mean, it's true, of course, but *that particular* line of reasoning has never sat well with me as moral justification. Like, if I know for a fact that somebody's gonna steal my next-door neighbor's Xbox in a few days, that doesn't mean that I'm morally allowed to steal it now. Not the same situation at all, of course; I'm just saying that even if we say Amber doesn't need to feel bad, I don't think that particular argument is a fully valid one.

Sky Starlight

@Astariel Dina did removed her bed on her own, replacing it with the dinosaur, as it was “between her and happiness” (I think it was a patreon bonus strip)

Tessea

True!! I was planning to suggest Agatha for this month's Bonus strip!

Smoochie

Hah! Amber feeling too guilty and immediately sinking any chances of her and Walky before the ship sails! Called it! -sees Dina in Panel 3- No, no, no, no…Not like this! NOT LIKE THIS!

Smoochie

@DramaQueen That would be the point of view of poison I think, right? If anything, a more sane take would be that Dorothy and Joyce might have been better served confronting their feelings for each other way before Joe and Joyce could have securely been a thing/the Walky and Lucy and Dorothy saga.

VengeanceKnight

“David Walkerton. Brilliant, but lazy.”

Jasmijn Wellner

i've been walky here. multiple times even.

Jasmijn Wellner

(i wanted to make a joke about transfem walky but i couldn't find a way to fit it in with my comment)

Andrea Andrew

I’m sure they’ll work through that misunderstanding when Amber’s pain meds wear off.

Andrea Andrew

I wish the summer, fall, or winter special price had gone through. Perhaps these two finally getting intimate onscreen will happen before Christmas.

Smoochie

This is how an egg cracks. (Transfem Walky joke AND an obscure Rob Thomas/Matchbox Twenty ref in big 2025)

Smoochie

Are you more than likely right? Yes. Is this all just a cavalcade of college students needing to communicate better? Yes. But let me have this one! Just briefly Andrea!

Edwin I Callahan

Even though in comic strip time they happened last week.

zee

zee

I think more (or maybe just part) of the guilt is coming from amber wanting to get Walky dumped, than just her active hand in the situation. Like, a finger curled on the monkeys paw and this is all the fallout from it

zee

He's extremely sharp, his passive perception is cracked. He was also the first person to clock that amber and mazi were seperate beings

zee

I make so many random dnd references in my analysis of these characters im tempted to just make them sheets. P sure it's been done before but eh

Andrea Andrew

I understand the need for drama.😁☺️

Andrea Andrew

Please. Dorothy is whole wheat, at best. 🤣

Harold

@5099 5618: Sweet Dorothy K / Laundry never felt so good

zee

I prefer whole wheat and it has nutritional value. Dotty is the real wonderbread here, not dan

zee

To paraphrase Becky, Dina feels things stronger than anyone else, she just doesn't show it often. So we can't take her looking chill at face value

Ilana Feldman

I thought Joyce was the white bread in the metaphor. (Also, whole wheat is way better than white IMO)

zee

They're both both. They're a bad sandwhich

Andrea Andrew

Nah, they’re the best sandwich in modern webcomics. They’re either a bahn mi or a Thanksgiving sandwich.

zee

They are white bread and unseasoned boiled chicken. No lettuce or tomato, no pickles, no mustard, 0 toppings. Not even margarine on the bread. Just dry wonderbread and the palest boiled chicken breast you ever did see. Which is also dry. Drier than the bread somehow.

Sumit

This is the cost of Becky still not being over Joyce, isn't it? It's not Becky's fault, she feels what she feels. She feels heartbroken and as a result, Dina feels like she is still second to Joyce in Becky's heart.

Smoochie

Since this is Indiana, Dorothy and Joyce are very likely a pork tenderloin sandwich. White bread, lettuce and tomato, mayonnaise, no onions, pickles, mustard or ketchup. Cheese? Get out. Basic on the external, a little barebones but a delight deep inside.

zee

Pork is the grossest possible meat imo so sure ig. Too much flavor and a lil too mean to them to be accurate but yeah we can go with that. I still insist they're a sandwich that tastes like nothing without even any enjoyable texture tho

GundamBradley

Oh, I agree. I was more suggesting that it shows he really gets Amber in a way a lot of the cast don't. I'm still very partial to some past ships these two have been in, but I'm warming on these two all the same.

Harold

"Now all you have to do is hold the chicken..."

David M Willis

they're bland no they're not yes they are no they're not yes they are they super are not they super are nuh uh yeah huh love it here

Sajuuk-Khar

you know, some hack fanfic guy did a thing where Walky beelined for Amber instead of making a stop at Dorothy, and Dorothy got so desperate she proposed a threesome to Joyce and Joe, and it all turned out way better than any of them expected! Much cleaner than in canon! (It’s me. I’m the hack fanfic guy)

zee

Oops Sorry

Maude Reads Things

Oooof, poor Dina. And Amber. And Walky. POOR EVERYONE

Harold

@Sajuuk-Khar: Well, it depends on what you mean by "cleaner"

Dmitri0240

@Rob I think a better (but still flawed) analogy would be that your neighbor is out of town and out of communication for a month, their friend comes by hoping to ask your neighbor for their Xbox. You know the friend, and know for a fact that your neighbor would have said yes without hesitation. So do you use the spare key to let them inside to pick it up, or do you tell them "too bad" and they should have came before your neighbor left? Joyce's heart is her own to give. And as soon as she got all of the information, she decided to give it to Dorothy. They should be (and have been) held responsible for the actual cheating, but that doesn't mean the entire relationship is permanently immoral.

Astariel

I'm kind of losing track of the analogies, but I will say it's an argument I wouldn't use in real life. But in the context of this comic, where apparently everyone has been able to see it and just been waiting for it to happen for months, I think it works.

Astariel

@Sky Starlight - Becky brought the dinosaur in, (possibly with help?), but I don't remember a strip about Dina taking the bed out. I just remember one where Ruth admonished her about it. In any case, it wouldn't surprise me if the bed was actually easier to deal with than the dinosaur.

Sajuuk-Khar

Quoth the poet: “giggity!”
