They must be protected at all costs

Aubrey Bryn

This is so wholesome, I'm not looking forward to when she has to ask about their business decisions...

Ragtime

The smiling faces of parents who still have their daughter, unlike many Bulmerian parents.

WT Harmon

I'm glad some of the parents love and respect their kids.

Syl

oh, this is a very good twist

Andrea Andrew

Awww. Also, ohhhh. They seem so pleasant, that it’s going to be hard to be angry at them for donating money to a foreign Zionist government.

Kazo

omg you hit the invert button on Joe and Rachel didn't you

ArdieBea

Ok, that's sweet. I'll take it.

MrShoggoth

This is actually going better than I thought it would and I already had high hopes

Packy Anderson

I have this vague memory of a blue flashback strip of young Carla telling her dad that she was a girl, but I can't find it and I may have hallucinated it.

C

Unfortunately the strip has to be followed up with Meet the Fockers, and it's just not as good an experience for the audience (read, Carla having to have the rough conversation with her supportive parents about their shortcomings in regards to the whole supporting death and suffering in another country).

KittyKai

AAAAAAAAAAAAA THIS IS SO WHOLESOMEEEE THIS IS GONNA BE SO GODDAMN PAINFUL

tifani

Do they have that anime filter or do their eyes just do that?

tifani

They are adorable though.

David M Willis

There's a bonus strip flashback where Carla is given the Ultra Car toy her dad made for her

Simon Magid

Well yeah. I still am. Somewhat mitigated by them being fictional, mind you.

Logibear

If the next strip has Charlie showing up on the call in the parents room then I will explode.

Grace Serenity

No, I remember that. I think it was a bonus strip.

Astariel

Awww. I knew they were good parents, but I didn't expect them to be adorable.

Packy Anderson

That's probably what I'm misremembering. So folks were right, this is the first time in a public strip either of Carla's parents are seen.

tifani

Well they have the United States military on speed dial apparently

Laura

AWWWWWWWW

Fart Captor

AWWWWWWWW why must they be filthy capitalists, I want to love them so bad

5099 5618 v2.0

Next: figuring out who they remind me of [1]. (/squints) (/Hamster running on wheel) [1] - Besides Carla.

5099 5618 v2.0

(interesting that she's got her dad's eyes and her mom's hair (?) and jawline. I also choose to believe she got her mom's height, until proven wrong)

Harold

I can't believe we're finally meeting Agatha's birth parents

Harold

@WT Harmon: The Keeners and the Saruyamas still have pride of place in the DoA parent parade, but this is great, so far.

C.T. Phipps

"We support and love you!" "Hey, are you war criminals?" "Is it a war crime to support Bulmeria's..." "Yes." "Oh."

Lazuli

after 3000 years, the parents enter the chat

Logibear

(into glitter that is)

EnterTheHero

Wholesome? In my Dumbing of Age?

DiDi-chan

Oh my god, her parents are treasures! Please don't ruin this tomorrow... please don't ruin this tomorrow...

Diane

Well they seem neat. Also wonder why dad is transparent? Does Carla have a trans parent? It runs in the family? Probably just hologram from wherever he's actually at. Kinda weird but okay, they're capitalist thriving on a war society, I can judge them on more worthwhile things.

GundamBradley

I strongly suspect this wasn't the initial thing she wanted to bring up, but that she lost her nerve and pivoted to a pleasant topic.

Logibear

Hologram would explain the kawaii sparkles as well.

Tessea

Awww!! I love them already! Politics aside it's good to see another supportive pair of parents. There haven't been enough of those in the story. (or in real life. Treasure them if yours are!) I can almost hear them squee through the screen!

Tessea

I think that's just a reflection on Carla's big screen.

Shane Wegner

Ruttech Anti-Squee Technology auto-blocks all squees above 12khz. “I said -almost-!”

Logibear

Butter em up with the good news and then slip in a logic bomb behind their firewall.

Lazuli

its more likely than you think

Shane Wegner

“It’s a variation of the Complement Sandwich! We’re proud of you for building rapport before pivoting to the more difficult part of the conversation.”

Shane Wegner

The couple that slays together, stays together!

Ernie O'Dell

Time traveling daughter of Julia Gray and President Doris. 🤔

Logibear

"Hmmm, I want some hyper elites in this comic so we can dunk on them, how can I do this while also crushing the audiences spirit?... By Jove! I'll make them the best parents possible" - Willis in his Imaginatorium

Tessea

Looking closer, He's not translucent. You can't see the monitors on his desk behind him. Those lines aren't in the same spots in any of the frames, but you can see them spaced all the way up to the top of the image, so now I think it's some kind of rolling distortion from whatever transmission setup they have.

Tessea

I subbed to support you, and getting to read those bonus comics was icing on the cake!

darklion

Dina's seem good

Tessea

That would be amazing. She just stands there and waves at Carla. The parent's don't notice until they ask Carla what she's gawking at.

Ragtime

Mr and Mrs. Saruyama and Dorothy's parent's......so far (thanks for planting that seed of doubt Willis.) Amber's mom and Joe's mom.

5099 5618 v2.0

Headcannon: Carla's mom sounds like Amanda Lafrenais

ArdieBea

Mike's parents. Not so much 'cool' but devoted.

ArdieBea

Andrea, I don't know that that's what they've done. The problem is that they supply computer systems to the Govt. and probably military manufacturers who are selling to Bulmeria.

ArdieBea

Yeah, I was seeing seeing a Dotty resemblance there at first (blonde, glasses, freckles) but the face shape is totally different.

HenryVolt

God, Carla's parents are actually kind of...precious.

Ellen N. K.

Idk they problably gotta get out of selling to weapons manufacturers to be cool, but supportive for sure.

joe mcguire

Damn it….are people….complicated? But I want to be righteously angry without mitigation! 😩

Amós Batista

Stop, Willis. This is making the Bulmerian military support subject way more worse. Poor Carla.

tifani

Carla’s dad kind of looks like R. K. Milholland.

The Deliberate Myth

Until proven otherwise, I maintain those sparkles and hearts actually appeared on Carla's screen - and possibly as holograms in the room with her parents - thanks to some Ruttech facial tracking software.

Harold

@Ragtime: I would also add that Joe's dad, despite his past, seems to be making a real effort with Amber's mom (and with Amber as well, in terms of being supportive).

Albi

aww, this is precious I hope this convo goes well

Rob McBobson

As a European dude, that gives me SUCH children's books vibes

Harold

Mr. and Mrs. Rutten: "But-- but how did you get past security?" Dina [popping up next to Charlie]: "Hello." Ruttens: "GAAA!!!"

Empress of Robots

Everyone: Let’s see Carla stick it to her billionaire industrialist parents! The Monkey’s Paw Curls Carla’s Parents: We’re Wholesome adorable cinnamon buns who love our trans daughter AND her new girlfriend!!!!

Harold

@Empress of Robots: Emil and Janneke have each other in their phones as "Roll, Perfect Cinnamon"

Empress of Robots

I made that same joke to myself but with Carla. “Gestational Bun, Adorable Wholesome Cinnamon” and “Nongestational Bun, Adorable Wholesome Cinnamon”

Kyle

The world's most adorable defense contractors. They're ethically unimpeachable because they're so relatable!

Jayne Lindgren

Vibe-check me on this, but I'm getting a little uncomfortable at how queerness is being portrayed as a counter-force to other forms of activism lately? Like, the idea that embracing or centering their own identity as queer women is inherently a white, imperialist position that Carla, Joyce and Dorothy must reject and atone for before they can be considered "good" again. And to be fair, I'm not sure if it's something that's coming from the writing itself or is being imposed by the direction of the commentary. EDIT: And just to be clear, I'm not defending any particular stupid thing Joyce et. all has said or done. They have definitely messed up and been insensitive. But I've also seen some comments lately that...toe a line, I think, of blaming that insensitivity on the *fact* that they're queer and that they relate to stuff through that lens.

Maude Reads Things

I think that's a valid concern to have. Some of the comments have veered that way and I'm not exempting my own from those because I do think I've been hard on Joyce in particular. Sometimes the intersections of our identity can give us blind spots on where we land on certain issues(like Carla's wealth almost certainly not being from sources that aren't on the 100% up and up BUT it's also been a way for her incredibly loving and supportive parents to help her. Or how Joyce and Dorothy getting together is great and of course they don't want to feel ashamed of anything about it but it also inadvertently took the focus off the actual content of the protest because the press zeroed in on them.

Maude Reads Things

Holy shit they love her so much. Whatever else comes out from this, they have that going for them.

Astariel

It's not just you. It's honestly pretty uncomfortable sometimes. The strong thread of "being homophobic to Joyce is okay, even praiseworthy, because she did a bad at a protest," was particularly unpleasant.

C.T. Phipps

Dorothy is Pro-Bulmerian as well as Queer. So is Jocelyn. Dorothy doesn't care about Bulmeria. Carla's parents are pro-Carla and anti-Bulmeria.

Steven Pope

Oh noooo I love them they’re so happy for their daughter.

Lea

Oh my goodness....would Carla still be "centering her queerness" if she'd opened with, "Well, I have a BOYFRIEND now?" Her parents asked "What's new?" What do you really expect from a 19 year old? "Hi Honey! What's new?" "Well, turns out y'all have been terrible murderers responsible for countless deaths. I need you to fix that. Also, I need my meal card account refilled."

Lea

Honestly, at this point, it seems like "Existing as queer while not being absolutely perfect" is apparently "Centering your queerness." Yeah, I agree with you on the unpleasant vibe. What is this? Until world peace is accomplished, no one can have sexual/romantic relationships?
