can't ever show them on-screen from the wide shot because then we show how the aspect ratio is contradictory

Ria

YEAH THIS COULD ONLY END ONE WAY HUH

Aubrey Bryn

I can't even imagine being in the position to have to criticize your parents for something so significant, let alone when they're this loving and accepting of something that not everyone would do unconditionally

MrShoggoth

Who'd a thunk something so wholesome could also be painful?

Packy Anderson

It's hard calling out your parents when they're wrong. Especially when they may not realize that they're wrong.

C

It hurts deep...oof.

Logibear

I feel like people forgot that these two are the biggest allies and supporters that Carla has ever had. Gosh it would be hard to consider that they might not be infallible. Every individual is a myriad of different people i guess

Empress of Robots

Oh no. Carla just got hit with the emotional equivalent of a pie in the face.

ArdieBea

Huh. Hope there's still a girlfriend when it's time to meet the family. But hey, as a trans girl I wouldn't be too hasty about risking my most significant supporters, either.

tifani

Bad people can be good parents. It’s easy to be good to your child and bad to the world at large because one thing is deeply personal and the other is “just business”.

Maude Reads Things

Ooof. This is a whole new kind of hurt than the dickhead parents we're used to.

HenryVolt

They are legit so wholesome and loving that they give Mike's parents a run for their money, this is a nightmare...OK best case Is scenario her parents aren't that politically in the know and the minute Carla breaks it to them what their tech is being used for they pull out of whatever business deal that's helping the military industrial complex. If Tony Stark can have this type change then I'm sure a loving married couple like this can do the same, no slave labor in a cave needed.

Astariel

Poor Carla, she just couldn't go through with it. I don't blame her at all, there's no way I would have been able to do it in her place.

DiDi-chan

Aw, she couldn't do it. I'm both happy and sad for her.

tifani

Or maybe calling them “bad people” oversimplifies it. But to have the degree of success and influence they do and live with your choices requires a lot of compartmentalization. Most likely there are layers upon layers keeping them from knowing where exactly their money gets spent buuut government contracts. That’s some serious shit. That requires background checks and forms and red tape. It’s not like a charity in their names where the money goes out to this and that and idk my point. I guess it’s just…I mean the my HAVE to know. They HAVE to know. And that’s why Carla can’t make herself ask. There’s no wiggle room here.

GundamBradley

It reminds me of how, in the original Gundam series, Amuro Ray's father is a brilliant scientist and his mother is a tireless worker for refugee camps. Both are also exceedingly absent parents who consistently fail to understand their son and what he needs from them. Carla's parents are the inverse of that, I guess, displaying moral character for their daughter but not for their responsibilities to ensure their products are used ethically.

GundamBradley

Carla has always said that she likes her parents, and she has sometimes rolled her eyes at how so many others can't seem to get enough conflict with theirs. I suppose you can only delay rebellion, and you cannot fully escape it. Even the best parents will make decisions we will grow to have difficulty reconciling.

Jesse

Maybe they just instinctively want to be as central to the camera as possible for their daughter.

KittyKai

GOD I love this dilemma... And I feel so bad for Carla - she's really trapped between a rock and a hard place

Maybeeus

I think Carla has always been pretty high on my character ranks and the sole reason she isn't at the very top is probably just because she has less appearances than the competition... But i still really like and appreciate her. Ace rep isn't that common even still. Back when i was a teen i was very firmly team Asuka also... I always had a fondness for characters who are prickly and mean on the outside but have a sweeter side they're afraid to show. I know a lot of people find both Carla and Asuka to be annoying and to those people my counter argument is to give 'em both middle fingers and loudly shout LOSERS!!!

The Lurker

Witness the good works of Alice Walton, and Elaine Marshall from my part of the world, doing good with their parents money. I don’t know that Willis has a Forbes wealth-ranking in universe, but maybe the Rutten’s ( a good solid Dutch name!) are good billionaires (there are NO good billionaires.)

Shane Wegner

I feel like her parents have given a lot of thought to their choices and Carla is unlikely to have a hot take they hadn’t already factored into their calculus.

The Lurker

I am a bit saddened that Carla had to say her parents always had her back - she knows too many people that doesn’t apply to in universe. Damn you, Willis!

Shane Wegner

I could easily imagine “20.25% of our GPS chips go to military contractors, 8.5% of those go to guided munitions, and 1.15% of those munitions go to Bulmeria, of which an unknown number have been used in the current conflict and of those used, an unknown number were used against people who were actually noncombatants.” I can imagine plenty of ethical people looking at that math and not reaching the conclusion it’s time to shut down the entire GPS chip line, or even time to stop selling to the government and military product lines.

Katrina Marie Paton

So MacKenzie Scott is not a good billionaire? Or are you wrong?

Albi

Sigh.

GundamBradley

Yeahhh, there are no good billionaires, though I'd say there are still worse billionaires. Like, all things equal, I guess I'd rather be kin to a Shahid Khan than an Elon Musk, for instance, but all the same....

Albi

Having hard convos is hard.

GundamBradley

She's trying to basically give away her money as reasonably as she can. That it's taking the amount of time it does illustrates how wild being a billionaire even is, that others being so covetous and miserly is wild in that you can actively give tons of cash away and it still barely makes a dent.

Tessea

I get the feeling Carla's too smart to run with a 'hot take'. Questions would be the better way to open the conversation than accusations. but that doesn't make it easier

Fart Captor

Hahaha haha oh fuck They've been so supportive of her transition in a country that's very hostile to trans people, and especially providing treatment to trans kids or even allowing them to transition socially So it feels like betrayal to criticize them and accuse them of being complicit in genocide. Or perhaps as though if not handled exactly the right way, it might alienate the only people she's ever been able to count on having her back, and upon whom she is completely financially dependent upon And that's probably on top of the more obvious fact that she's having to confront the very real possibly of her parents that she's always loved so much being bad people, and having this conversation with them will likely reveal stuff about them she will not be happy to learn Just a bad time all around :(

Sajuuk-Khar

My heart hurts but it is a GOOD pain. This is EXACTLY the dilemma I wanted. The Ruttens are sweet and good and kind, and also they are blithely accepting of money soaked in innocent blood (as long as it’s at a remove and they don’t really think about it), and now Carla knows and God it hurts in SUCH A GOOD WAY

Tessea

Stupid serious conversations. At least Carla's unlikely to get a 'you're too young to understand' style dismissal.

Tessea

I can not wait to see them interacting with Charlie!

Kyle

willis, you are the voice of a generation, and it's a generation with a lot of guilt and unexamined trauma. fuck, this hurts to read.

Shane Wegner

Carla was barely even thinking about this until Charlie brought it up, maybe a week in-universe ago?

The Deliberate Myth

There are parts of this storyline that get me thinking. I am currently in therapy, trying to find better coping structures for some of my own flaws, and of course the origins of them. (To paraphrase the joke on my old psych professor's door, the compromise in any "nature vs nurture" debate is "it's probably your mom's fault".) I have been thinking a lot recently about grace. Not in a religious sense - I am far too agnostic/athiestic for that - but in the "we are imperfect creatures who fuck things up sometimes" sense. How much grace do I give myself when I fuck up? How much grace do I give others? How close to perfection should I strive for? How close do I expect or hope others to strive for? Is perfection even possible?

The Deliberate Myth

I hate typing replies from my phone because I have limited formatting and I cannot do paragraphs - every attempt to make a new paragraph submits the post instead. Anyway.

The Deliberate Myth

My point being that I find similar questions going through my head with regards to Carla's parents. They clearly to have elements of strength and positive intent and action when it comes to supporting Carla. They also have... I will vaguely call it "elements of imperfection" with regard to Ruttech's involvment in war crimes and genocide, as we do not yet know how much or how little awareness and intent they have. And I find myself trying to figure out the tipping point. At what point does someone's actions become unforgivable? There is clearly some threshold, some event horizon beyond which there is no coming back. And I am super curious (and somewhat scared, tbh) to learn how close the Ruttens might be to that redemptive schwarzchild limit.

The Deliberate Myth

I dunno. I am tired and this little rant is mostly me just stream-of-consciousness-ing my morning.

Harold

@Shane: Charlie and Carla discussed this *yesterday*. But you're correct - Carla has probably never thought seriously about where her family's wealth (at least partially) comes from.

Sumit

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED! * unfurls the banner *

Empress of Robots

Someone made a similar comment yesterday, but this arc has been really hard at points because it seems to put opposition to genocide directly in competition with queer/trans joy. I.e. that characters who are brave enough to seek/embrace their love and truth in INDIANA (of all places), must feel guilty if it inadvertently takes attention away from stopping genocide. This has been discussed re: Joyce/Dorothy ad naseum (so I won't retread). And obviously there are characters who are managing both (to an extent) like Jocelyne but she is still more closeted than NOT and is TERRIFIED to come out to her parents (with VERY GOOD REASON). But having just attended a memorial for a trans woman who is Carla's age who took her own life because it's 2025 and she didn't see a future for herself even though her family is amazing and supportive, it is really hard to see loving parents of a trans kid placed in the position where they are (at best) oblivious enablers of genocide and their support of their trans kid MAY be contingent on whether or not Carla calls them out on it. I have faith that this will shake out good, but in the middle of it (especially with SOME of the comments I'm seeing) it's a little hard.

Doki

Yeah, honestly, it's an INCREDIBLY realistic portrayal of what it's like to be a minority in one way but also be born with some privilege in other ways. It's... really, really complicated sometimes.

Jayne Lindgren

It just gives me the icky feeling of whataboutism at best, and oppression Olympics at worst.

Empress of Robots

Yeah! But I *THINK* most of that is from how people have been parsing it in the comments than the text. I remain optimistic that this is NOT what it's about. It's funny thinking back to the strip where Raidah confronted Joyce and JOYCE WAS RIGHT—she DOES deserve a medal for being openly gay in 202X in Indiana especially coming from her upbringing.

Sajuuk-Khar

I am 99.9% certain that competition between these two points of an intersectional ideal is not the intended vibe and is definitely being amplified by bias in the comments. Like, I mean, the last couple strips prior to the Carla strips here featured both the “queer joy” icon, Joyce, and the “anti-genocide” icon, Raidah, in competition and *because of that competition*, acting like complete buffoons. Joyce is very brave and I will give her a medal in my heart, but that sentiment and her attitude about becoming Perfected Joyce are just *bonehead* dumb shit, and Raidah has locked herself in an echo chamber where she goes “how do I work towards a world free from oppression? Simple! Collaborate with existing power structures and pursue petty vendettas! It’s so OBVIOUS!”, which is also insane bonehead hours.

Donny K

Mentally I am laying prone of the floor. Carla in the best, worst position.
