...more fundy-fucking required.

The25th

I think I remember someone asking if Dorothy could wear Joyce’s Head Alien pjs, look like she has her own

Fart Captor

Her hearts in the right place (yuri)

C.T. Phipps

I hope we can get Dorothy getting told about Joyce's polygamy plan now.

William Lewis

That Dorothy expression... 🤣 but it's a good reminder that like with alcoholism, being a recovering fundamentalist (or Roman Catholic, IME) is a lifetime spent one day at a time.

C.T. Phipps

I hope Joyce embraces Warhammer logic that Hell exists and Heaven doesn't. Then she can become a Sister of Battle.

Andrea Andrew

So she’s going through that feeling of overcoming a fear installed in her early in life. Also, having that Becky moment of crying after sex.

David M Willis

Those are Joyce's Head Alien pajama pants! Dorothy's are purple.

Railway Series Book Club

literally was in a conversation today where we speculated that joyce would have a "oh this is so sinful, im being defiled" kink, cool that thats just canon apparently

Grace Serenity

I don't think Dorothy really understands just how pervasive fundie teachings are, especially given how long Joyce has been under them. A few months of being a non believer isn't enough, Dotty!

Fart Captor

JOE had the POLYAMORY plan, which is a bit different

Logibear

"Well, looks like I didn't fuck the fundie out of you completely. We might have to do something about that"

Logibear

Though, the evolving Dottie face here makes me feel like she might not immediately be in the mood

C.T. Phipps

Only until President Keener legalizes it. Joyce was also down for it and agreed.

KittyKai

This is what you signed up for, Dorthy. No take backsies x3

C

...Working on separating bits of old faith from new deeds, I see.

Logibear

I mean, there are takebacksies. And it would be hilarious for Walky to be dumped by Dorothy a third time in like a comically short period of time.

Grace Serenity

Polygamy is a dude with a harem. Polyamory is a group of equals in various levels of relationship to each other.

Dan Rabin

Joyce speaks of permanent defilement while restoring the virginity of the bed vis à vis the good-as-new fitted sheet. See? All clean, and both my hands are visible! Dorothy is still clutching her toiletries from Dina, and the stack of newspapers is still by the door.

MrShoggoth

joyce ffs i know you were raised a calvinist but shut the fuck up lmao

GundamBradley

Yeah, I am kind of looking forward to these two having to deal with each other's baggage on this side of the relationship. It'll be interesting to see how they handle each other.

Smoochie

This would be a very bad time for the theme song from ‘The Odd Couple’ to start playing

AE Gonzalez

Dorothy could wear a Head Alien helmet for role-play.

Fart Captor

What Grace said and also, I don't remember Joyce showing any hint of interest in Joe's idea, much less agreeing to it

Harold

Narrator: "She did not, in fact, describe it better"

Harold

@doinks: In sharp contrast to the Triangle of Joynkness

darklion

Here Joyce, have this shovel, you need it more than I do

Waifu Purplebutt

I literally got chewed out for saying "virginity is binary" a while ago - it's not a bad thing, it just is - like if the sun is visible in the sky or not making day vs night being a binary thing.

Astariel

Hmm, Dorothy's not loving the ex-fundie humor. Joyce is right in the last panel, though. They should definitely be doing as much sex as possible.

Omnithea

Still some Christo-residue in there.

Tessea

No more caffeine or sugar for this girl!

Giant Speck

Oh my God, they were lustwolves.

C

"...So Dorothy, is it too soon to be talking about butt stuff?" Dorothy: *chokes on her drink*

Mariah

yeah I feel like she should give joyce the space to feel her feelings even if it comes from a unhealthy place that kind of thinking does not just leave after 18 years of beainwashing.

Smoochie

The consequences were the friends we made along the way—literally the friends we made girlfriends were the consequences the whole time.

5099 5618 v2.0

Gotta get a good ROI, yeah. That's fundamental to any good investment strategy.

5099 5618 v2.0

@Astariel Mrs. 5099 says "orgasms per unit of damnation"

SmartAlec105

I think it's more useful to use virginity as several different virginities. It encapsulates the fact that there's many different types of sex rather than saying all sex is sex which overly simplifies things.

SmartAlec105

Joyce doesn't understand how takesie backsies works at all, based on how she gavesies awaysies to Dorothy before takesies backsies from Joe.

Tom @ Magic Chopstick Games

Wait, do people drag the whole danged mattress off the bed instead of just climbing up and tucking the sheet in? Is this a thing? Do mattresses weigh a lot less in Indiana?

Astariel

@5099 - Oh, that's a good one!

Astariel

That's interesting, actually. Joyce seems to be implying that she lost her virginity/was permanently defiled in the Slipshine incident. So does this mean she no longer believes that the laundry room incident counted as sex?

Dracon Atrox

As someone who somewhat still remembers dorm life, the mattresses provided by the school are cheap and lightweight. I used to be able to pick up my mattress with one hand, lol.

Andrew

It sure would startle Amber if Dorothy visited while dressed like that!

tifani

She’s been unraveling since Friday. That “for the first time ever I am without shame” moment wasn’t liberation — it was a defense mechanism, a desperate reframe to outrun what she’s really feeling. Dina literally warned Joe this might happen: Joyce’s upbringing all but guaranteed a post-coital breakdown. Fundamentalism doesn’t vanish with disbelief; it lingers in reflex. The body remembers what the doctrine taught it to fear. Since then, Joyce has been holding herself together through performance — manic calm, exaggerated confidence, total refusal to reflect. Every action has been a sprint away from consequence. The Raidah confrontation forced stillness, and everything she’d been repressing hit at once. Dorothy enabling that denial only made it worse. They’ve both been clinging to the “we’re fine, it’s fine, everything’s fine” routine like it could make the fallout go away. It couldn’t. This isn’t sudden — it’s the slow collapse of avoidance. Joyce is at war with herself: the morality that shaped her versus the wants she’s finally allowed to name. One half still terrified of damnation; the other trying to redefine grace. Her crisis isn’t just desire — it’s conscience. She’s been acting in ways she knows violate her own sense of how people should be treated, and forcing herself not to care, because admitting it would mean admitting she’s become someone she doesn’t recognize. This is what freedom without integration looks like: liberation that outpaces understanding. Joyce isn’t breaking down because she sinned. She’s breaking down because she finally acted outside the system that defined her — and she hasn’t yet built a self to hold what that freedom costs.

Smoochie

Rethinking all the times Joyce has shown near obsessive ‘ten toes down’ on relationships in the past because it was a defense mechanism earns her a new level of empathy from me.

Annie

Dina warned Joe about the possible post coital breakdowns. Dorothy on the other hand is in for a wild ride!

Shane Wegner

Hmm, some minor relapsing kicking in. Where you go, I will go. A where you come, I will come! And what happened to that “I’m the best version of myself/gay heroism” stuff you just told Raidah?

HenryVolt

Well Joyce is no longer "pure" (she never was) and Dorothy's no longer "perfect" (also never was) so they're even.

Shane Wegner

A spectrum is more useful than Damned/Not Damned, that’s for sure.

MrShoggoth

Do you have any links to the Dina and Joe conversation? I’d love to reread it but have no idea when it was

MrShoggoth

I don’t think that’s humour. It could be, given a few months or years, but this seems a little too real…

Smoochie

That’s… That’s not good right? Like I can’t tell if it’s a good thing or a bad because like, on the one hand if you fetishize something to wear it like armor that—feels right, but then if you’re not emotionally mature to handle your own kink of your trauma… There’s a lot here, man.

Sajuuk-Khar

Joyce: You know, actually, if Satan was real and not a fake idea, he’d be pretty FUCKING cool, right?? Dorothy: … Joyce: Like, we could be his super sexy evil demon girls! Succubi! Or succubuses if you like doing plurals wrong. Dorothy: *experiencing buyer’s remorse so intense it cancels out today’s orgasms*

Sajuuk-Khar

When you gay sex so hard you invert the concept of the elect

Sajuuk-Khar

It could *become* a good thing—i.e., a kink—given time, mutual interest, wearing away the dumb rough edges, etc. Right now it’s just a Calvinism tulpa

tifani

…I think it would be in everyone’s best interest for Joe and Sarah to show up right now. This isn’t for punishment; it’s emotional triage. Joyce is seconds from a breakdown, and Dorothy isn’t equipped to manage that. Joe’s likely already been preparing for this exact scenario, and Sarah’s good in crisis. They could stabilize her, get things under control, and then have the talk that actually matters.

Sajuuk-Khar

serious question: what do I have to do for this discourse to stop, is there anything I can do, because both sides of it I find so depressing like it’s obvious that the “WHEN JOE??” question is bad and thought-terminating, I don’t have to explain that, but the “NUH UH” response just hurts my genuine polyshipper heart and isn’t it? I get where it comes from, just…😓 like at this point I’d take Willis retconning that strip where Joe steps aside back in

5099 5618 v2.0

@S-K Could be worse. She could have gone straight for Nietzsche. Or Ayn Rand.

Sajuuk-Khar

I should note here for purposes of good faith that C.T. is factually wrong, Joyce didn’t commit to jack shit or agree to anything, also the polygamy thing even as a joke: sucks out loud. I also would say it’s factually wrong Joyce didn’t display a hint of interest, but that could also just be me believing in hints and the slow burn and the process too much, and I understand where FC’s coming from, just. :(

Sajuuk-Khar

Oooouuuggghhh oh no I imagined a Randian Joyce and had a full-body shudder

5099 5618 v2.0

@S-K It probably is a good time to let it go, for a bit [1] [1] - Like Moriarty let Sherlock go at the end of the mind-fight in Game of Shadows ("Conclusion: inevitable. Unless...").

5099 5618 v2.0

@S-K I think she/they'd need to read a few more books, first. They have time, mind you. It's only freshman year. But still.

5099 5618 v2.0

@Mariah I've heard that described as "Knowing you are sick does not make you well." It's a good first step, but very much *just* the first step.

5099 5618 v2.0

@Dracon Atrox Yeah, they seemed to be some kind of almost-cardboard, if memory serves. ...I do not miss dorm beds.

Seth Aaron Hershman has they/she pronouns

i think joyce actually thinks it’s really hot to think of herself as being “made a woman” or “defiled” or whatever and dorothy keeps misinterpreting this as “oh no my poor gf needs more deprogramming :(”

5099 5618 v2.0

@SmartAlec105 This implies higher dimensional structures of virginity. Virginal hypercubes, for instance. And that's before you get into non-Euclidean constructs...

5099 5618 v2.0

@Seth Aaron... ¿Por qué no los dos?

tifani

Yeah, no. No, no, no, no, nooo. What you’re describing is actually the worst attitude to have to what is going on. Joyce is showing clear signs of being in crisis and Dorothy is absolutely right to be feeling anxiety right now. Trying to play it off as fun and sexy liberation is exactly what Joyce has been doing to create the current crisis she’s falling into. You’re basically advocating for the coping mechanism that lead to the current problem being the decided on reality. It’s like seeing a house on fire and someone is trapped inside and they’re telling the fireman “there’s no fire” and the firemen are like “well we see a fire but she says there’s no fire and she’s the one inside the house so I guess we just gotta take her word on that” and so they ignore all outwards signs of the structure crumbling.

Smoochie

Can I interest anyone here in some Nietzsche Joyce?

Sajuuk-Khar

Joyce: God is dead! God remains dead! And we killed him with our gay lady parts! Dorothy: *face buried in hands*

5099 5618 v2.0

@S-K (/30 yr old!Joyce looking back on that memory): "Babe, I'm so sorry. I really have no idea how you put up with me, back then" (30 yr old!Dorothy): "Being present for your goth phase did a lot to get me through, ngl."

Empress of Robots

Wait. Were Mormons a harem anime this entire time?!?!?!

Empress of Robots

So begins the arc of Dorothy wearing Joyce-code clothing because all of Dorothy’s clothes are trapped behind The Becky

C.T. Phipps

Polygyny is one man, multiple wives. Polyandry is one woman, multiple men. Polygamy is multiple spouses regardless, FYI.

Empress of Robots

BIFE is obviously a pun on both Wife and Life because YUP

Maybeeus

"I'm startin' to think your superpower is being able to say the scariest, most messed-up crap while somehow thinkin' it sounds fantastic."

Harold

@Maybeeus: Dorothy wouldn't drop her g's like that. Ah can't help picturing Sal saying that.

Harold

@Sajuuk-Khar: A Randian Joyce as opposed to a *randy* Joyce, amirite

Railway Series Book Club

i don't think Dorothy should be writing off Joyce Succubus Cosplay so hastily

Sajuuk-Khar

Queen: Dorothy, not being a Woman of Culture (like, say, Amber) has not considered the *benefits* yet

Sajuuk-Khar

Isn’t that a Walky quote, though?

Empress of Robots

I'm ready for "Joseph Smith Muyo" "Joseph Smith Universe" "Joseph Smith in Love" Joseph Smith in Tokyo" —wait I think I lost the plot here.

Empress of Robots

Wait. I just realized this is the first time Joyce has clearly (if implicitly) acknowledged that Laundry was NOT sex. That’s growth!

Brian Scott

I do think Joyce is still too much in a fundie mindset of “the only consequence worth caring about is hell, and if it doesn’t exist I can do ANYTHING” not realizing how her actions are impacting the people around her

Astariel

@MrShoggoth - I think it's humor covering up real feelings that she knows are irrational.

tifani

It’s not a mashup of bi wife?

Empress of Robots

It could be that too! But in this context, it's also a reference to the old tv show "This is your life" where each episode started with the host surprising a celebrity and saying for example) "Christopher Lee, this is your life" and then each episode was a mini biography/exposé. Obviously the other pun was on wife haha

Empress of Robots

unlike Dorothy, I like my puns to be both messy and obscure.

David M Willis

That was the first storyline of book 15, and we're on the first storyline of book 16. So about 4 days ago.

Rob McBobson

Since the comment was removed, it might be a faux pas to ask this, and please ignore if it is, but otherwise: What was the deleted comment about?

Harold

@Maybeeus and @Sajuuk-Khar: Thank you for the reminder! Yes, I'd forgotten that quote.

Harold

@Maybeeus: Thanks also for the reminder that Joyce used to be the kind of person who unironically uses words like "godpertunity," lol

David M Willis

I don't see a deleted comment, just one hidden by some content settings.

tifani

@rob Yeah I didn’t delete anything and on my end I see everything I posted. @willis 4 DAYS. Ok, ok, ok. Wow. The situation is actually worse than I thought. Cool!

Sajuuk-Khar

No Need For Joseph: The Moroni-Ohki Chronicles

tifani

….where THE FUCK are Joe and Sarah???

Rob McBobson

Hm. Well, all I can see is the text "This comment has been removed." Agh, tech...

Fart Captor

…and polyamory is still an entirely different thing that does not imply a messed up power dynamic where one person has a growing stable of spouses who are all exclusive to them

tifani

WARNING: THIS IS NOT SEXUAL LIBERATION. WARNING: JOYCE IS HEADING FOR COLLAPSE. Clinically speaking, Joyce is not experiencing liberation but acute post-deconversion dysregulation. The current behavior aligns with a trauma-based coping response, not authentic integration of sexuality or belief. Her presentation reflects a collision between residual fundamentalist conditioning and premature exposure to disinhibiting experiences. 1. Temporal compression: The interval between her first sexual encounter and this episode is approximately four days. That is far too brief a period for psychological assimilation following eighteen years of moral absolutism. What we are observing is shock adaptation, not growth. 2. Cognitive dissonance: Her explicit insistence on “freedom” functions as denial. Individuals exiting high-control systems often replace external repression with internalized policing, oscillating between self-punishment and manic declarations of autonomy. 3. Somatic contradiction: The body retains the catechisms of purity culture long after the intellect rejects them. This mismatch produces a dysregulated feedback loop—physiological guilt signals interpreted as excitement, then reframed as empowerment to avoid collapse. 4. Manic masking: The exaggerated humor and mock-blasphemous language (“send me to hell”) are not expressions of confidence but defense mechanisms. Laughter here is dissociation. She is performing normalcy while her nervous system destabilizes. 5. Moral displacement: Joyce’s recent actions increasingly contradict her established ethics of care. When behavioral inhibition collapses faster than moral recalibration, it indicates loss of coherence, not liberation. The pursuit of immediate desire becomes an anesthetic for unresolved conflict. 6. Interpersonal misattunement: Dorothy’s role is more subtle than overt reassurance. She has not explicitly claimed that everything is fine, but her pragmatic detachment and intellectual framing have encouraged Joyce’s isolation. In therapeutic terms, this constitutes contextual enabling: by prioritizing reason over reflection, she reinforces Joyce’s denial of distress. 7. Prognostic indicators: This trajectory predicts a collapse event characterized by exhaustion, intrusive shame, and emotional withdrawal once the euphoric defense burns out. It is a textbook pattern in deconversion trauma: the manic overcorrection before the inevitable reckoning. Joyce is not healing; she is compensating. The current behavior is best understood as acute dissonant coping—a maladaptive strategy to reassert control after the perceived loss of moral structure. Without containment and emotional integration, destabilization is imminent. Tl/dr: google religious trauma syndrome.

C.T. Phipps

Possibly but nothing prevents other spouses from being made to other people too like Doctor Phlox's wives.

MrShoggoth

Any time I think I had a hard time getting out of Catholicism I read about this stuff and realise I got out seriously lightly. Joyce right now reminds me of a few people I went to school with and I feel really bad for her, again.

tifani

That was her trying to outwardly cope while inside she’s been actively losing her shit. For apparently 4 days now.

tifani

Hey I only spent a couple of years stuck in an evangelical school system. I also got off way lightly in comparison and I STILL had so much trauma over this shit I didn’t lose my virginity until I was 22 despite actively trying and having opportunities to do so for about 4 years up until then.

Empress of Robots

I purposefully avoided any riffs on the OVA series because the last thing anyone wants is Joseph Smith to take a 10 year old Cabbit girl as one of his wives and getting her pregnant (which is a real thing that happens in the Tenchi Muyo Ryo-ohki manga)

tifani

I broke up with my first boyfriend (a very sweet Danny type I liked a lot) 4 months into our dating because I knew sex stuff was going to start coming up and I couldn’t deal with it. I was basically exactly Joyce’s age. So I picked fleeing instead of overcompensating. I would not recommend either.

tifani

I’m still not like…normal about this shit. But I think I have a handle on it.

NinjaZaku

I may have dropped out of college before I finished my psych degree, but I still know manic coping when I see it. Joyce is about to crash *hard*.

David M Willis

@tifani -- still hidden and i wouldn't bother, most of the "comment hidden for content" posts are... incredibly nothing. i can never tell what it thinks needs censoring
