well, for november 14-16 originally, actually, but

This was intended to be a sequence where we see Dorothy go to class and realize, whoops, she's the subject of her own poli-sci class. We've known that Bart O'Ryan was one of Dorothy's professors because of Walky's "Lawsome!" webcomic for a few years, but I wasn't actually sure of the logistics of Dorothy having someone who may or may not be the dean of the law school be her instructor for one of her freshman-level poli-sci classes. I worried this part would be too small and incidental for Bart O'Ryan.

(Bart O'Ryan was a major antagonist from the end of It's Walky!. He existed to point out the protagonists' many war crimes, which made Our Heroes very ornery. Think Walter Peck from Ghostbusters. He's right, but HEY. O'Ryan's introduction to It's Walky! also included a publically-broadcast image of Joyce kissing Her True Love for the first time! It sort of works as an intercontinuity parallel, even if I'd forgotten about that detail when writing this.)

(I've forgotten so much of It's Walky!, you guys)

Anyway, I needed to consult the #1 Bart O'Ryan Fan.

So I poked Wack'd, asking, hey, should Dean(?) Bart O'Ryan be Dorothy's undergraduate class instructor, is that too implausible, too stretchy for O'Ryan's potential importance, and she was like "the answer should always be 'use bart o'ryan' if the question is 'should i use bart o'ryan'" and so hey, everybody, it's Bart O'Ryan!!!! That penciling of the instructor in the fourth panel up above was a generic professor dude that I subsequently drew Bart over.

But if this is gonna be Professor Bart O'Ryan's Important(?) Debut, I decided the strip needed more Dutch angles and drama, though. So Dorothy's hat-pull-down got pushed back a strip.

Ha ha ha Dorothy, why can't you be more like the inspiring individuals in this photo?!?! That was part of something I've been wanting to do with Joyce/Dorothy getting together -- a few years (for us) earlier, Jennifer chastised Dorothy for not having charisma, and only becoming interesting to her when Dorothy had a fire lit under her ass about Joyce. The idea was that Joyce would manifest Dorothy's rizz. But of course, Joyce isn't here right now, so Dorothy is just Dorothy, asking thoughtful, unpopular questions.

So to better push that story angle forward, there was originally a middle strip where the class lionizes Dorothy (without realizing it was Dorothy) as an Incredible Amazing Charismatic Ladysmoocher or whatever. And Dorothy starts warming up to the idea a little. Maybe she COULD be President, after all! so long as she doesn't ask any questions

But whoops, she does have questions! Dorothy's gonna Dorothy. And then so we have the above strip as the final, third part, with Dorothy's second-part question about optics being moved into this strip and given its space.

So those three strips existed together in the buffer. But months later, For Reasons, I went back for rewrites!

I decided that maybe I didn't want a whole middle strip about Dorothy being lauded. If we're to learn that Joyce completes Dorothy's charisma, we can learn that a different way later. Just imagining the 24-hour period of comments section on this strip gave me hives. So I yanked out that middle strip entirely. And I consolidated the first strip to incorporate Dorothy's two important reactions from the middle strip, first of realizing Oh Hey That's Me, Yikes, and then of her pulling her hat down over her face. Lost a Dramatic Bart O'Ryan panel, oh well.

(and that original panel of Dorothy's hat-pull wasn't very good, so i made it cover her face better)

and then the third strip unaltered as originally completed, now the second in the sequence

sequence feels a bit anemic now, admittedly, but it gave me room for other, newer strips

UPDATE: i have been convinced to run the previously-ditched middle strip by the fine folks below, so now i guess this post mostly exists to preserve the un-unused strips

the second and third strips run together tomorrow, and i've moved up this post's free access period to tonight at update time

Honestly, every canon and alternate take with this scene is amazing. I love the idea that Joyce and Dorothy bring out the best in each other, but since they can’t always be around each other, they have to capture the qualities they have together and apply that to themselves. Also, the irony of this professor simultaneously calling Dorothy worthless and praising her for leadership unknowingly is hilarious and a little frustrating.

Packy Anderson

I do miss the great punchline "I DON'T ΕΧΡECT YOU TO UNDERSTAND THE LEADERSHIP QUALITIES DEMONSTRATED HERE." But that might just be because I want O'Ryan exposed as a fool.

Railway Series Book Club

i dunno, i feel like this sequence really needs that middle strip in order to like... have a through-line? it feels super bewildering without o'ryan having room to explain his take on this, and the explicit context that he doesn't know this is dorothy helps too.

C

Honestly, yeah, I think it was the right call. Both for the mess of the comments section, and Joyce and Dorothy can have that realization in a better context than the protest one.

I Know Why the Mowed Lawn Screams

actually bummed we didn’t get this middle strip, but that’s partially because i think the idea of dorothy explicitly achieving something she previously tried so hard to impress on her peers and failed to do (innate sense of leadership and political charisma akin to the obama “hope” campaign) only to be uncomfortable with that now that her political compass has changed is so so good

Railway Series Book Club

like worst case scenario you could've just closed the comments so that nobody could whinge on-site until the next strip runs and they're like "oh ok dorothy doesn't agree, that's good" middle strip gives it both better pacing and makes o'ryan sound less like a lunatic

I Know Why the Mowed Lawn Screams

like thats the kind of knife-twisty internal conflict stuff i just adore and find always really good in character dilemmas like this y’know? “oops, this probably was me a few days ago oh no oh shit oh this feels bad” type beat lmfao

David M Willis

Okay you've sold me, I'll run two strips tomorrow. If only so I don't have to move 10 months ahead one day.

Daniel

I'm glad, because I honestly didn't even realize that the professor didn't recognize Dorothy until he called them 'unknown individuals' in the middle strip.

David M Willis

also left a note for everybody now that today's strip is different, since the dorothy panels get reintegrated into strip 2

Astariel

Probably redundant to mention this due to the update, but I do think it's important to learn that the prof doesn't recognize Dorothy in the picture. I had been assuming he did and was deliberately making Dorothy the subject of her own class. I have a slightly higher opinion of him now.

Tessea

O'Ryan seems to be even more of a dick in the unused script!

Andrea Andrew

Makes you wonder how many faculty and workers at the university recognize them in the photo. It’d be hilarious for Joyce and Dorothy to tell this story to their future child that they were an inspiration at their university.

Heatth

I think I agree. Without it I was just kinda confused about what his point was supposed to be. After reading some comments I kinda got it, but I think the middle strip helps to convey the idea more clearly. I do like the idea of not having a whole strip lauding Dorothy but, like, I am not sure that middle strip is actually that. It is still so uncomfortable when paired with the point Dorothy raises next strip that it becomes more ambivalent than anything.

Harold

I'm imagining your confused reaction to the Patreon comments these last couple of days ("Wait, do they not realize that Bart *doesn't know that's Dorothy in the photo*?"). Re-integrating the second strip is absolutely the right call. Also, the secondary lesson here might be "don't change the comic just (or, at least, partially) because the comments section might go apeshit." That ship has been sailing and sailing again since mid-July, and as many have said, thank god we have the Patreon to avoid that. (For the most part.)

Tesset

What's really crazy to me out is that the professor knows Dorothy's name (or at least her last name) but refers to the rest of his class by clothing items. Really paints Dorothy as a teacher's pet here (which she absolutely is lol)

Kelly (they-them)

I like that the now used second strip establishes that Professor O'Ryan doesn't recognize Dorothy as one of the people photographed. I figured he didn't, but I also wouldn't put it past him to put one of his students in the middle of a Big Damn Kiss projected to the rest of the class

Kelly (they-them)

I bet Leslie and maybe Robin will recognize them. Mm, probably just Leslie, actually

Harold

@Tesset: And the fact that he knows her name makes it even funnier that he doesn't recognize her in a large projected photo.

Harold

@Kelly (they-them): Probably, although it would be hilarious if Robin opened today's class by pointing at Joyce and Dorothy and exclaiming something like, "Yo! Aces on the smooch, peeps!" (Made slightly less hilarious by the fact that Becky is also in the class.)

Tesset

She's not wearing her hat in the photo, and that's how he recognized the one student that came up at the end of every class long enough to learn her name. Bart O'Ryan, the prosopagnosia icon we need(?)

darklion

As officially written, I'm left with the impression that he does recognize Dorothy. Am I not supposed to get this impression?

Maude Reads Things

Nice to see the thought process. See, Dorothy? You do have charisma.

Astariel

@darklion - Well, he calls them unknown individuals in the middle strip and I don't see any firm evidence that he does know it's her.

DramaQueen

Agreed. The main comments section has been nut-job anti-Dorothy for several months now. The only way to fix that is to give into all the people who think straight couples are the only real couples. Or to go back in time and take out the whole “Dorothy gives Walky the rollicking good time that Lucy saved for Jacob” storyline and the “Joe dates Joyce” storyline. Joe has grown so much and become a much more interesting person, and Walky really needed to get laid.

DramaQueen

Yay! I love the whole Dorothy gets what she wanted but completely accidentally thing. Just let go and feel the force, Luke.

Gale Tazzin

also: running the two strips together means you don't have to deal with the toxic comments from the middle strip alone, much of which is resolved by the second strip

DramaQueen

And we all know how uncomfortable with praise Dorothy is, even anonymous praise. But I do think the girls deserve some happiness and they went for it. If they had waited for the perfect, most appropriate time to declare their love, it would have been stale and overthought.

Mark

I saw the double posting before I saw this, so I am less confused now.

Michael Steamweed

Ahh, yess, Dorothy, you begin to see the difference between leadership-for-power vs leadership-for-progress.

T Campbell

Right call. I would have misread the students' reaction without that extra strip.

Hambone Fakenamington

FWIW, as a college student, one of the professors told our class that low level courses were often highly sought after by professors, because they were relatively easy and freed up the professor's time for research. Of course, this was in an engineering course, so maybe the dynamics are different there.

Ty34er

I am really confused how this is a poli-sci class
