Minzoku Bokumetsu

"and good leadership isn't questioned" ...wait no

ArdieBea

Good questions aren't leadership if the leadership you admire is tyranny. Fuck this guy, and go Dorothy! Gutsy girl!

I Know Why the Mowed Lawn Screams

leadership is an apple that you pick from a tree, keener, not uh *looks at notes* having empathy for marginalized groups

Andrea Andrew

So…he doesn’t see it. I wonder if anyone else in the class recognizes her.

Derek Benson

Oh now see here, Sam the Eagle. Teachers answer questions

Grace Serenity

Ah, he's teaching THAT kind of poli-sci. I shouldn't be surprised. It is Indiana, after all...

Logibear

"And avoiding hard questions makes a shitty lecturer you cumstain" "...You've got a great future in leadership in front of you Keener"

Railway Series Book Club

i kinda wish this strip was o'ryan explaining what the fuck he meant by what he said yesterday instead of continuing to not explain shit that said this is extremely funny

William Lewis

Leadership, real leadership, starts with those questions and then taking care of those for whom those questions matter. The Sergeants running the PLDC (primary leadership development course) course I once took in the US Army, would just shake their head at him.

Astariel

Oh for fuck's sake. Leaving aside this guys probably terrible views, he's a shitty teacher.

Crunchos cereal

You see, most teachers aren’t leaders and that’s why they answer questions.

Fart Captor

"Good questions aren't leadership but girls kissing IS. Your assignment today will be kissing another student homosexually on the mouth."

DramaQueen

Well, then her obvious next step is a bold declaration that the class needs to condemn the forced taking of land and resources, and genocide. And most importantly to condemn that the governments of other countries are allowing themselves to be wholly owned tools of that murderous tyranny, even suppressing their own citizens at home.

Rob McBobson

I assumed that he meant that them standing there after the police moved in on the protest was an example of how "leaders TAKE ground, they don't CEDE it."

Grace Serenity

See, THIS is the kind of politics I'm here for! #MakeAmericaGayAgain

DramaQueen

Refusing illegal orders IS leadership. The Nazis were all prosecuted for their crimes, even and especially the Nazi version of ICE.

DramaQueen

Bravo to Dorothy for overcoming her mortification and for speaking up.

darklion

wtf how is this guy a professor

DramaQueen

Obviously the school chose this guy like Trump chooses his cabinet: central casting provided a guy who looks the part of a charismatic teacher, and his experience is producing some tiktoks that the Russian troll farms love.

JarJar

Damn are there any good teachers in this school? Like besides Leslie. Maybe I need to reread but the ones I remember were either arrogant douches, have no idea what they’re doing or having sex with their students.

William Lewis

When I was still in, we were taught that annually. The memory of My Lai was still very real in 1982. Now? Not so much.

Dan Rabin

The sequence of Dorothys is very expressive with both face and hands. O'Ryan's face is out-of-frame in the last panel as he turns away from Dorothy's "good question". This is a powerful bit of show-don't-tell characterization, and it's disturbing. This is very Dorothy, trying to bring the accusations of others against the kiss into her (?former) classroom-discussion comfort zone. She isn't trying to disappear into her hat anymore, and it's a surprisingly rapid recovery.

Joe Crow - Words & Pictures

Dorothy: “ …I could have stayed in the dorm and made out with my girlfriend instead of dealing with this bullshit. What was I thinking?” Dismissive remarks are leadership either, you chode, nor are they teaching. You shame your goatee.

Astariel

Well, if we assume all the students in the cast have four classes, there must be a lot of teachers we don't see. Maybe some of them are good, and we don't see them because good teaching doesn't make for good drama?

C.T. Phipps

"Dorothy, which is more important, a protest against genocide or setting yourself up as a leader?" "Uh, the genocide." "Wrong."

Jay

I had a few shitty professors like this. They were there more to do research and write books and thus were shit at actually teaching since they didn't care about it.

C.T. Phipps

"Yes! Exactly! Take back the protest from the Bulmerian American students! America for America." "HOW ARE YOU A TEACHER!?"

Julian Williams

Asma gave Dorothy something to think about and O'Ryan pretty much directly confirmed she was correct.

Albi

Yeah, who the fuck is this clown?!

darklion

That would be fine, honestly. That's what they're paid to do. But usually professors have some sense of propriety. Under normal circumstances this guy is a legal liability to his department and university and they vet for these sorts of things. The one professor I had that was truly shitty I later learned did not get tenure. Hope this guys is in the same situation.

taekwondogirl

I think there's the Intro to Comp Sci professor who is a young woman who was good. It's just that Amber and Danny probably didn't need to take the class based on their knowledge level.

Tessea

This teacher is swiftly turning into a self-help author giving a seminar.

Shane Wegner

Professor O’Ryan graduated from the Leeroy Jenkins Memorial College of Decisive Action.

Shane Wegner

Despite the sketchy shape of this lesson, there is a grain of truth somewhere in what he’s saying: hand-wringing and second-guessing yourself with questions in front of the class isn’t very leadershippy. IF Dorothy wants leadership (nothing says she has to, even though it was her entire identity until recently), working out what she believes in private and then taking opportunities to say it with confidence would be stronger. Nothing says she has to want that though. That said, Dorothy has been knocked off balance on the back foot for a while now. If she can regain her balance, the other lesson today is this Kiss front-page isn’t going away, so she might as well work out what her messaging actually is. If that’s “Yeah I kissed someone I care about in an intense moment, but the real issue is to review our school’s endowment and its ties to the Bulmerian genoicde, and consider the benefits of divesting portions of our portfolio.” Pulling her hat down and trying to shrink inside herself, pretending it never happened like she just did isn’t going to work. She’s thrust herself on stage and into the spotlight, and she doesn’t even have a song ready? Waste of an opportunity she could still grab.

Shane Wegner

I actually kind of like this. One of these two things is under the control of some college freshman in Indiana, the other decidedly isn’t. But if Dorothy takes the reins of leadership, she could set herself up to actually make an impact.

joe mcguire

Is the class just…him declaring things to be or not be “leadership?” And why do I suspect that carries over into his personal life? “It is my wife and i’s anniversary. She will have a bone dry martini- vermouth is not leadership- and I will have a Bloody Mary- now it’s okay if you don’t have cornichons for the garnish, I will settle for olives- olives are leadership, but cornichons are *more* leadership. “

Jasmijn Wellner

"Divorce isn't leadership" "I know it isn't Bart. There are other things in life than leadership."

Packy Anderson

It's good to know that Bart is still an ass.

Packy Anderson

In the Walkyverse, this clown was trying to get SEMMF shut down.

The Deliberate Myth

He seems to equate leadership with controlling the narrative. Questions aren't leadership because they allow for the public at large to make up their own minds, instead of just accepting or focusing on what the "leader" has given them. It is perhaps the most quintessentially and dishumorously Trumpian philosophy I have seen from one of the adults in DoA.

Heatth

There is a good lesson in there. But, like, the teach should still actually give that lesson instead of just making statements without elaboraiton.

Preventer Wind

There’s the science professor with the big white eyebrows who says things like time is a construct of man. Or something like that. I think Joyce has that class with Dina and Becky?

KittyKai

Okay seriously this teacher is gonna need to explain himself ASAP cause I'm just sitting here incredibly confused over this-

Samantha Becker

Are you crazy? Elaboration isn't leadership, everyone knows that!

tifani

This feels like a direct response to Joyce’s “nothing could possibly be more important than that” convo with Raidah.

Tessea

It was Daisy that put her on stage, all for the sake of a pun.

Empress of Robots

Dorothy, is it really wise to be drawing MORE attention to yourself in this class?

Margaret Ann

Good questions are journalism, and journalism is, historically, something that conflicts with leadership. Maybe Dorothy should pick a new role model to emulate--Ida Tarbell or Nellie Bly, for example :D

Harold

In the next strip we'll see a big plate of chicken on his desk

David Pipes

Good questions *are* a part of good leadership, though. They give direction to a team. (Or am I being too ADHD literal here?)

Logibear

Nope, you're spot on.

ArdieBea

And the advanced math's teacher seems competent - from Joyce's perspective, anyway.

Arlo C-J

Face blindness IS leadership, though, so everyone in class is getting an A

KittyKai

Yeah - including that middle strip was VERY much the right call IMO

Shane Wegner

Hmm, she picked up a sign and bought a tent all on her own. But Daisy did front page her.
