Sajuuk-Khar

Dorothy Keener was found dead today from guilt. She was 19. Services will be held at the cemetery.

LupinThe8th

Sadly, the research on whether or not velociraptors mate for life is spotty, so it's uncertain.

C

"...I CAN GET MY NOTE RENOTARIZED IN TRIPLICATE!"

5099 5618 v2.0

Oh, hun. You really should confirm that with Dina, tho.

Packy Anderson

Not that that would be Dorothy or Joyce's fault. Their actions may have been what precipitated it, but it's Becky's reaction to their actions, not their actions themselves, that caused problems for her relationship.

Kelly (they-them)

Dorothy is making the face I was when I read that strip

C

Absolutely, please verify before doomposting...especially for the audience's sake, lol.

Astariel

Big "oh shit" energy from last panel Dorothy. I'm glad to see Becky isn't sure they've broken up, though. I'm still holding out some hope that this will just be a rough patch for them. I do wonder about Becky's take in panel 2. Maybe keeping the Joyrothy out of sight doesn't make her feel better, but it's hard to believe that having it in sight wouldn't make her feel worse.

Logibear

Please please please Dorothy do not try and insert yourself here and try to "fix" this for them.

Jayne Lindgren

Unfortunately, Dorothy doesn't see it that way. And I get the urge to feel guilty about absolutely everything. It's not her fault. But she's going to believe it is.

Railway Series Book Club

don't worry becky, Captain Poindexter can totally fix any and all of these problems!!!!!!

Harold

Alternate panel 3: Dorothy: "So... you're saying we should do it in front of y--" Becky: "NO DOTTY THAT IS NOT WH-- wait... hmm..."

Logibear

It is not your fault that Becky is responding the way she is. And admitting an ounce of regret for choosing Joyce here will immediately set her off.

Logibear

"Hey Becks! Take some notes. We call this one the Fundie Fuckmageddon"

Simon Magid

and it is not even St. Valentine's Day

tifani

Consequences!

Fart Captor

BECKY NOOOO YOU CAN STILL FIX THAT YOU DUMB GAY IDIOT JERKASS

AE Gonzalez

Captain *Bony* Poindexter

EnterTheHero

and here comes the pain again

tifani

But yes that is the face! THAT IS THE FACE YOU MAKE WHEN THE COUPLE OF ALL TIME HAS BROKEN!

Packy Anderson

Oh, I'm the same way. In Dorothy's shoes, I'd totally blame myself. It's only because I'm not involved that I can see it clearly.

tifani

I think Joyce might throw up when she finds out.

tifani

I don’t think she’s in the place to fix it right now emotionally.

Harold

"Please, please - Captain Poindexter was my father. Call me Bony."

tifani

I kind of think it’s pretty obvious they did break up.

5099 5618 v2.0

@tifani I would not be surprised, but I do think she needs to at least talk to Dina about it. At least to try to salvage anything at all from all that.

5099 5618 v2.0

@tifani I don't think it's her place to fix it, or try. I hope she figures that out before doing something she regrets. (Update: I thought we were talking about Dorothy, here. Re-read prior comments and realized my error. Mea culpa)

Fart Captor

yes but the lack of a definitive, concrete breakup means there's time for her to get the moping out of her system and talk this out with Dina before anything is final which also means there's more time for Willis to twist the knife but WHEN HAS THAT EVER HAPPENED

Lisa

Getting together with Joyce really did help Dorothy stabilize emotionally. She's doing her best to be thoughtful here, as well as she can in impossible circumstances. When she was still spiraling, I'm not sure she would have had it in her.

Fart Captor

She does not need to "insert herself" here? She's friends with both of them and Becky could really use some sense talked into her right now

Calder Johnson

I hate how accurate this prediction feels

Fart Captor

There are options between Joyce and Dorothy avoiding Becky entirely and them making out in front of her. They're both her friends and she's goin through it right now. She could probably use someone to talk to right now

Peach Reaver

And that would be a very fair reaction on Dina's part too

Smoochie

WE USED TO BE A PROPER COUNTRY

Peach Reaver

Holy crud I keep forgetting these idiots are like still literal babies

Irene Knapp

yeah this is what we're thinking, too. she could absolutely apologize... but it's not clear she's going to

KittyKai

Aaaand the shoe drops.......

GundamBradley

I want Becky to unfuck her situation, but I get that this has been like, 2 days' events. She's got a lot to process, and consideration for her partner was unfortunately an early casualty of the process.

Lazuli

so this has been a sucky month for a portion of the cast

Sajuuk-Khar

PRESIDENT BONY, AMORAL LUST POINDEXTER AND LESBIAN LOVE MACHINE-SLEUTH, IS ON THE CASE

Sajuuk-Khar

Also, like, to be the advocate for the orange devil here, she did try to direct her toxic ball of emotions into the area it would do the least damage. She tried very hard, and Dina kind of said “fuck you” and fucked off. Which, y’know, fully within her rights to do but like. I dunno if Becky is the only one with work to do here.

Sajuuk-Khar

Becky: Take notes?! Take NOTES?! Dotty I will give DIRECTIONS, I may be a bottom but I still got the EXPERIENCE ya frickin NOOB

Sajuuk-Khar

*imagining a full Kamen Rider Revice-ass henshin sequence for Dorothy*

Sajuuk-Khar

I mean in the same way that I still don’t think Walky had to say jack shit to Lucy, I think after that statement Dina made, Becky can assume it’s Over Play that kind of game, win that kind of prizes

Sajuuk-Khar

Lucy: *depicted under Jacob* is TOTALLY FINE with THIS SITUATION

Lazuli

yeah. it seems like her and jacob are dating now?

Sajuuk-Khar

(Honestly if we have Becky going to Dina to beg forgiveness I’m gonna be kind of pissed off.)

Maybeeus

I've got a confession to make, ABBA's The Winner Takes It All has been playing in my head for months now on and off when reading some of these strips. First with Dorothy nearly losing Joyce then Joe (as far as we know currently) losing Joyce and now the entire situation unfolding here...

Sajuuk-Khar

They’re certainly fucking a lot for people who aren’t!

Sajuuk-Khar

Who is going to be set off? I’m confused.

Amós Batista

It's funny how Dorothy didn't suspect about Becky and Dina, after all.

Sajuuk-Khar

Willis may throw a dice His mind as cold as ice And someone way down here Loses someone dear —ABBA!Becky

Shane Wegner

“How can I be Hokage if I can’t even protect one friend?”

5099 5618 v2.0

@S-K Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Tessea

Go talk to Dina!! ;_; Taaaaaalk!!!! It's only been a day! Dammit Becky don't make it worse by closing up and assuming the worst! The expressions in those last two panels just hurt.

Tessea

Just like Amber is.

NinjaZaku

Hopefully this breaks a bit of the tunnel vision Dorothy's had the last few (in universe) days. The straight to the point response Becky has in the second panel hits real hard. She's not sparing anything anymore.

Calder Johnson

Nah, I'm gonna stick up for Dina on this one - if you're seeing that your partner is crashing out and literally stops believing in God because her first crush is making out with a girl that isn't her and you're already insecure about being the rebound or silver medal...I think deciding that you've had enough is not an indicator that you have to 'work on yourself'.

Rob McBobson

Och vinnaren tar allt... I skuggan är det kallt... Förloraren får stå ensam och se på... (The Swedish versions are so underrated...)

Calder Johnson

I know this may potentially be rubbing some fur the wrong way, but I'm hearing a lot of folks say 'Becky should do this!' or 'Dina shouldn't have done that!'...and while it's all phrased in a much nicer way, it's starting to feel like a touch of the same energy that a lot of other folks have directed towards Joyce and Dorothy about what they should or shouldn't have done. Point being, relationships are hard and 100% no-hit runs is a rough bar to hold people to.

5099 5618 v2.0

Tangential: dunno if anyone is keeping up with [ (Fionna & Cake) | Plur1bus ], but *man* was that a one-two punch this week...

Lazuli

ive been very sporadic on updates so have at best 75% understanding whats going on

darklion

"But the COST, John! Oh, the COST!"

joe mcguire

Yeah, it’s probably hard to see from the inside, but the moment Dorothy and Joyce kissed, I was like “oh no, what does this mean for Becky and Dina?”

Zesstra

In Roomies!, the death of Ruth was a defining moment that changed the strip forever. In Dumbing of Age, the death of the subtext around Dorothy×Joyce is going to change the strip forever, and I love it. (Also thinking about the skeet earlier depicting Walky and Joyce passing each other in the hall)

CoreyWW

I can tell the comic is good because I can’t even think of liveblog jokes to make, this is some Good Fucking Food Edit: Also I like that this is kinda making clear like… Dorothy is trying to help Becky but part of the problem is that Becky herself isn’t really even sure what she wants? Besides the fact that she wanted it to not happen at all and she wants to not feel the way she feels, but she does? Like there’s no easy answer and Becky spends a lot of time trying to like…seem like she’s less complex internally than she really is.

Empress of Robots

I am continuing to lose sympathy for Becky. She's being kind of a brat.

Vex Fidel

Boy howdy, I sure hate it when people make poor decisions in the "people making poor decisions" webcomic

Lia

U gotta remember the Trauma tho it informs the current moment. She deserves to be kind of a brat for like a decade or two imo

Andrea Andrew

Exactly! I’m happy she’s gotten better, and now, she needs to handle both her girlfriend and her roommate.

Harold

The Handler: A Dumbing of Age Pornographique

Empress of Robots

I understand that (and gods know she's been through a lot) but it just feels like she's lashing out at everyone because a girl she liked didn't feel the same way about her. Which would feel like some pretty toxic Andrew Tate dudebro cringe if Becky was a dude. Just sayin'

5099 5618 v2.0

@Harold Headcannon: 1) "The Handler" is the name of Amber's zine, which is mostly Real-Life Friend-Fiction. 2) Tina and Louise Belcher will both attend IUP [1], at some point. Both will request autographs on their favorite issues. [2] _________ [1] - Tina as a Freshman when Amber is a Junior, and Louise when Amber is a grad student. [2] - Tina's will be the one where Carla turns out to be a robot; she will be unable to form words in Amber's presence. Louise will be unable to stop herself from launching into prepared speeches regarding her favorite ship [3]; she is physically incapable of recognizing any of the cast in person. [3] - [ Ruth | Danny | Sal | Galasso ]

5099 5618 v2.0

@S-K (/Narrator) "Reader, it would be years before Becky and Dorothy would come to realize one of life's great truths: whether one is a top or a bottom depends on who else is present. "It would be one year after that before Dorothy came to terms with how being bossed around by redheads made her weak in the knees, but that... Is another story." (/Smokes pipe)

@S-K Set Off For What? (/Leap) (/Crashes through floor)

Dmitri0240

If she's still in the headspace of "I wish Joyce were with me instead of with Dorothy", then I'd actually argue she's better off finding someone else to talk to. If Becky's going to eventually get to the point of "I love Dina, I've taken her for granted, and Joyce coming out finally removes the biggest piece of looming baggage we had in our relationship" she needs someone with whom she can be brutally honest about her current, unprocessed feelings. And that's not Dina. (And Dorothy wouldn't be in my top dozen of suggestions either, but at least she won't be risking irreparably ruining her relationship with Dina by talking with Dorothy.)

Jeremy AR

I don't see how she is lashing out here, like at all.

Jeremy AR

Can't wait to hear how apparently Dorothy is still being performative and insincere here somehow.

Astariel

I think that even if they don't make out in front of her, it would still be painful to be around them, especially with all the new relationship energy they're emitting. Becky definitely needs someone to talk to, but I don't think Joyce and Dorothy would be very helpful at the moment, however good their intentions.

Shane Wegner

I’d struggle to see “I got you a notarized apology” as a genuine, remorseful response. It’s fine because you did paperwork? I don’t actually think Dorothy is responsible for Dina and Becky’s relationship, but she has some neurosis tendencies where she takes on responsibility for solving things not realistically her problem. But absolution via documents?

Jeremy AR

It is because it's from Dorothy, that's how Dorothy is. It is unconventional but that doesn't make it insincere. You applying the logic of everyday normal people and not the one from the very specific character traits that been consistent for years.

Sajuuk-Khar

Not what I’m saying, Calder, and also I’m not here to police Dina’s decisions, I think her decisions at the moment are absolutely dog shit but she’s vulnerable and fucked up too, for sure. What I am *saying* is *if* Dina, currently, wants Becky to continue being her romantic partner, DINA needs to reach across the divide too, not just expect Becky to throw herself at Dina’s sainted feet because Becky did a bad.

Sajuuk-Khar

I am not doing any witch-hunting bullshit towards Dina, for the record, and I’m irritated by the subtweet implication that I am. I simply believe that Dina did a thing that hurt Becky more in a time Becky was already hurt. Is that understandable and human? Absolutely. BUT Do I want them to kiss and make up without acknowledging that *both Dina and Becky acted shittily*? No. If the relationship involves Becky being forced to grovel for being too loud, yet again, I would rather it stays dead.

Calder Johnson

@Dmitri0240 Agreed. This has to be worked through - with someone else.

Calder Johnson

The statement that Dina may 'expect Becky to throw herself at Dina's sainted feet' is weird to me because we've seen absolutely zero indication that Dina wants that at all. Hear me out - maybe Dina is just done. Zero unfair expectations of Becky...just.plain.done. Because if someone hurts you badly enough - regardless if they didn't mean it - then maybe you decide to walk. And I absolutely push back against this idea that Dina deciding to do that means that she 'needs to work on herself.'

Zesstra

No problem at all! The question prompted me to include a link which will probably be helpful for anyone reading the comments.

Harold

@Zesstra: Still from Persona (Ingmar Bergman, 1966)

SkittleE

I have a feeling "wait what, when" is also going to be Dina's reaction upon hearing that

Sajuuk-Khar

You are not understanding me. I do not think and did not say Dina needs to work on *herself*. I think if she wants to keep the relationship she needs to work on *the relationship*. If she doesn’t want to keep the relationship, that’s fine. Things can proceed along the current trajectory and I will have no complaints. When I said “not only Becky has work to do”, I was responding to the sentiment that Becky needs to unfuck her situation. My argument would be that Dina also needs to unfuck it, if there is unfucking to be done.

Avian

from anyone else it would be condescending or mocking, from Dorothy specifically it is the most earnest amd genuine thing she can think of, rules MATTER to her and she this notarized. it's in MLA format. Absolutely a dumb move, but it's definitely genuine for her.

Calder Johnson

Yeah, absolutely. From her specifically, this is sincere as it gets. Woefully unhelpful, but sincere

Mariah

people have dismissing and downplaying becky's feelings ever since was first introduced there is a lot more going on here than "joyce does not like me back"

Mariah

Also maybe we should just stop comparing becky or queer female characters in general to a man or say she is acting like a man because if becky was a man this strips comments would give her much more empathy and sympathy like we see with Joe who being cheated on in a week long relationship is clearly more important than beckys clear suicidal tendencies and abandonment issues. If something bad happened to becky ya'll would probably be saying "where is joe" at her funeral.

Fart Captor

She is very calmly and maturely discussing stuff she's very upset about with Dorothy, after having JUST told her she doesn't need to apologize or even give her extra space about it, pretty clearly demonstrating she does not in fact blame or hate Dorothy or Joyce for being together or how painful it is for her Hell, even right in the midst of her very emotional reaction to learning about them, SHE PUT THAT ASIDE to run interference for Joyce to try to protect her from being outed to her dad! I'd love to know what on earth about that reminds you of Andrew Tate, the notorious human-trafficking rapist
