Minzoku Bokumetsu

I would assume not a panty raid, but in this day and age... 🤷

Jeremy AR

Hey Amber is on blue sky!

ArdieBea

Shit getting heavy - just in time for Christmas!

C.T. Phipps

I give even odds they arrest Sal as the only known felon with a violent past and the police ignoring her juvenile record being sealed. Also because ACAB.

Jeremy AR

Oh and also, holy fuck!

Logibear

My headcanon is that she's more upset that someone she doesn't know got her number rather than the fact that the pigs are coming /s

C

Oh shit, this is bad in so many ways.

LupinThe8th

Batman whenever he responds to the Bat Signal and it isn't Gordon.

Smoochie

I hate those very…Very likely odds.

Logibear

Who are they looking for specifically? Amazigirl? The two girls on the front of the newspaper? If so who doxxed them to the authorities?

Mitzi B.

combination of horrified and delighted at this new plot twist

Dan Rabin

Could be a burner phone of someone she knows.

Sajuuk-Khar

Jesus fucking Christ uh, shit! Run??

Harold

Super heavy depressing shit: It's not just for Valentine's Day anymore

Dan Rabin

It could also be a surveillance/repression-oriented entity flushing out the whole wing to have a look at the faces for Bad Purposes.

Dan Rabin

Don't need a deliberate or coerced snitch if they got into a suitable phone.

Heatth

Amazigirl is my guess. She beat up cops, that has consequences.

Gale Tazzin

Jennifer: "see i TOLD you all that she was amazi-girl but nobody wanted to listen"

Dan Rabin

Panel 1 sets the scene; 3-6 show Amber's interaction with what's on the screen, with the zooming-in on "unknown number" being highly important but not classifiable as friendly or hostile: the former could be Jocelyne on a burner phone; the latter could be someone wanting to identified the wounded Amazi-Girl if they knew her to have been wounded. We readers don't know, since the exact boundaries of our available information are being managed by a benevolent Storyteller God. The nice touch in this strip is panel 2 of Amber's hand reaching for the buzzing phone. It's not strictly needed for showing the information content of the strip, but it makes the flow smoother to imply Amber waking up and the phone getting into her hand.

Dan Rabin

Their powers be indeed strong if they can pass through the voids between comics, like Dina and Faye.

Gale Tazzin

OH SHIT SAL WAS THE ONE THAT HID AMAZIGIRL'S SHIT IT'S ACTUALLY GONNA BE HER

Ria

Dumbing of Age Book 17: Laws Are Threats Made by the Ruling Class, and Police Are Basically an Occupying Army

Jesse

“Who beat the shit out of all these cops?” *Seigh bells ringing* “Ho ho ho!”

Maude Reads Things

Fuck shit. Okay, who are we betting on for the caller? Could be Carla, she might be smart enough to use a proxy

Maybeeus

Can't wait to see Joyce make a visual callback to one of my favorite It's Walky! arcs this chapter!

5099 5618 v2.0

But for real, my guess is Asher. The mob has cops on the payroll, from previous strips. He'd have some insight into that, and he's already put his lot in with Amber and Sal, once.

Maybeeus

"are you reading the same page as us?" :D "What does this have to do with the current comic?" :D

Empress of Robots

"That is not the type of booty call I was expecting"

5099 5618 v2.0

@Dan Rabin I would not put that past Yay, even in their current [1] singular state. [1] - -/|\- ALLEGEDLY -/|\-

Terra Bruder

really happening in our neighborhoods right now, DoA as a radicalization engine milestone 1% complete

voyager-ngc5195

They're raiding Amazi-girl Headquarters? I've seen enough anime to know how this ends *pulls out 20-year-old burnt music CD featuring the 'Komm Susser Todd' track*

Maybeeus

Think less EoE and more Watchmen. This is when we get the reveal of the Amazishuttle.

Packy Anderson

Dammit. Every time I read ACAB, my brain first reads "Assigned Cop at birth".

Packy Anderson

DYW, after that alt text, my brain is just repeating "Must be Santa, must be Santa, must be Santa, Santa calls!"

ArdieBea

Remember Billifer's musing re Incelerator that someone had pointed him in the direction of Read. And Mob asset (cop) Lester discussing the possibility of Amber being Amazigirl with Blaine. There are several threads twisting in the wind, yet.

Tessea

Oh crap. Consequences are about to come knocking. If I understand US law, this can't be a legal police action unless they have a warrant, right? They'd need probable cause and a judge to sign off on it. The only thing I can think of is if they have some concrete proof that Amazi-Girl lives there.

DramaQueen

The US police have been acting illegally for some time now, all they need is a fig leaf of pretense and a corrupt judge to sign off, and then they have “qualified immunity” to let them get away with literal murder.

DramaQueen

That jerky professor although he’s on the side of the cops.

Edwin I Callahan

The police are going to raid all of the Read Hall girls’ wings? How many students would that involve? Talk about heavy handed.

Grace Serenity

Given her state of recovery, she can probably only amble quickly!

Logibear

Question. I know the timeline is loosey goosey and that we're still in first year for the main cast.... but what year is it? Is it still 2010?

Empress of Robots

THAT. Also (canonically) the DoA Bloomington Police are mobbed up (see, e.g. the extrajudicial murder/"suicide" of Blaine).

Empress of Robots

"This looks like a job...for Nightguy!" said no one ever.

HenryVolt

....I was getting an unsettling feeling earlier but this doesn't Bode well.

Dan Rabin

From https://www.dumbingofage.com/about/: "6) Dumbing of Age is not set in any particular year. I only say this because every time some pop culture reference shows up, someone is all “OH HEY HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE AREN’T WE STILL IN 2010???” Nope, sorry, but we ain’t! The comic moves slow, but it operates on comic book time. This webcomic is not gradually going to become a period piece. Just assume the strip is always set in whatever year it is right now."

5099 5618 v2.0

@EIC Cops get heavy-handed when they're embarrassed.

CoreyWW

Oh… fuck. That’s bad

Beck Chonigman

I'd say the text is part of a sting operation to trick her into going out and thus revealing herself, but let's be real here, the police are not that smart.

Logibear

Noice, thought that was the case but didn't know that we had it written as scripture

NinjaZaku

I believe we have reached the point where the shit hits the proverbial fan.

darklion

An insider at the police?

Shane Wegner

Smells like Asher trying to balance his karma out a bit. Surprise twist stretch guess- it's Faz.

Shane Wegner

If they know or suspect her enough to know her phone number, they don't have to send her a compiicated warning to see if she reacts as proof. They just have her lift up her shirt (which is probably what said raid is going to do anyway, albeit possibly in disguise.)

Shane Wegner

It's set in the year 20XX, Mega-Man style.

Shane Wegner

"This is just a Health And Comfort inspection. For a whole dorm! And we're not looking for any particular thing, just uh... for safety. Definitely not looking for any knife wounds we haven't mentioned to the Dean(s) who grudingingly authorized this as a protest follow-up."

Shane Wegner

Well, the College owns the rooms themselves, so the Deans could sort of authorize at least a general entrance to the building. Sort of like how cruise ships can enter your room since it's their ship, but will only do so for serious concerns about weapons or maybe drugs. The (Mafia-corrupted) cops could make a slightly plausible excuse about some sort of safety concern relating to the protest. It wouldn't stand up well to legal review, and it will annoy a lot of parents, some of whom can hire and/or ARE lawyers. If they had mentioned to the Deans they're looking for stab wounds because one of their boys in blue pulled a knife on a student, best believe no Dean-related permission would have been given. Without this tipper, there's a pretty good chance their dragnet would work. As is Amber can probably make herself scarce until her trail goes colder (ie, wounds heal the rest of the way, although will likely always be a scar.

Shane Wegner

They're looking for the student with recent knife wounds on her abdomen.

Shane Wegner

Her closet is currently full of yellow and blue hero gear as well.

Johanne

I hate that we can see Amber's phone screen just where the clock should be but we don't see it so we don't know what time it is

Joseph

None of the main cast is a D&D nerd. Best case is Amber since it’s gaming-related / adjacent.

CoreyWW

Is the Christmas update just going to be cops kicking down the door? Cause i have a feeling the Christmas update is gonna be cops kicking down the door

Preventer Wind

Twist: they’re looking for the faces of the protest (IE Joyce and Dorothy) since Amazigirl saved them for questioning

Mitzi B.

"Lester becomes plot-relevant again" was not on my 2026 bingo card for this comic!

<3

Think she went back to bed?

Harold

Robin, radicalized after getting out of jail

Maude Reads Things

If they have reason to believe AG lives here, they may have gotten the Dean's permission or a judge may have given a warrant to search. Or it may be related to other actions during the protest, rather than AG specifically. Without details on the raid it's hard to say.

Ria

It should be a character we've never seen before and never will again

5099 5618 v2.0

@darklion Mob was established as having a few, when Amber's dad got whacked in his hospital room.

5099 5618 v2.0

@NinjaZaku Nah, that was a while ago. Now everyone's just ducking and hoping not to get hit.
